Weekly Register: Paisley Brings 'Moonshine…' To The Party

brad paisley moonshineBrad Paisley’s Moonshine In The Trunk debuted with sales of 53K, locking in the No. 1 spot on the Country album chart, and No. 2 on the overall chart this week. Paisley produced the Arista Nashville release with Luke Wooten.
Due to the overall downslide of music purchases (largely due to streaming) comparing current debut week sales numbers to debut weeks in previous years isn’t exactly comparing apples to apples. Nonetheless, here is the info: In April 2013, Paisley released Wheelhouse, which sold 100K and entered at No. 1. In May 2011, This Is Country Music debuted at No. 1 with sales of 153K units.
Meanwhile on the Country tracks chart, Jason Aldean’s “Burnin’ It Down” sold 76K this week for a RTD total of 658K. Darius Rucker had the sweetest Country track debut with “Homegrown Honey” selling 25K. Taylor Swift sits pretty at No. 1 overall in her second week of release with “Shake It Off,” which sold 355K, for a total of 899K.

chase ricealbum1“Shake It Off” the lead single from Taylor Swift’s upcoming album 1989 sold and impressive 544K downloads its first week out, debuting at No. 1 overall.

However, this marks a sales tally slip from the 2012 debut of “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” the lead single from her mega blockbuster Red album. “Never Ever…” sold 623,000 units, marking the biggest digital sales week ever for a female. In the two years since the release of “Never Ever…” streaming has grown in popularity, while simultaneously decreasing sales.

On the Country album chart, Chase Rice debuted at No. 1 selling 44K copies of Ignite the Night. Following at No. 2 is Nashville Outlaws—A Tribute to Motley Crue, selling 31K.

Rounding out the Top 5 Country albums are Luke Bryan (16K this week), Brantley Gilbert (10K) and Miranda Lambert (10K).

Tracking Tracks

Jason Aldean is still smoldering at the top of the Country tracks chart with “Burnin’ It Down” scoring 83K clicks to cross the 500K mark. Making notable debuts are Blake Shelton’s “Neon Light” with 28K, and Lee Brice’s “Girls In Bikinis” with 18K.

Mobile Usage Surpasses Desktop in US

App_Report_Cover_mediumcomScore has issued its U.S. Mobile App Report, in part outlining the top 25 mobile apps by unique visitors. According to Talking New Media, the report also finds mobile device usage has now surpassed consumer consumption on a desktop, 60 percent to 40 percent, respectively. This compared to March 2013 when desktops were used 53 percent of the time vs. mobile’s 47 percent.
“Mobile has swiftly risen to become the leading digital platform, with total activity on smartphones and tablets accounting for an astounding 60 percent of digital media time spent in the U.S.,” notes comScore. “The fuel driving mobile’s relentless growth is primarily app usage, which alone makes up a majority of total digital media engagement at 52 percent.”
Pandora ranks as the fifth most accessed app, with 69 million unique visitors, according to Digital Music News. Besting the music streaming app is Facebook (115.4 million), YouTube (83.4 million), Google Play (72.3 million), and Google Search (70.2 million). Other popular iOS and Android apps include Instagram at No. 8, iTunes Radio/iCloud at No. 11, Twitter at No. 14, Netflix at No. 17, and Snapchat at No 18.
The report also notes that more consumers are using Andriod, but iOS users skew younger. Samsung dominates that market with 54 percent share.

Paisley Defies Label and Management, Leaks Album

Brad-Paisley-Moonshine-In-The-Truck-LeakBrad Paisley is all about leaking his forthcoming album, Moonshine in the Trunk, due to hit shelves next Monday, Aug. 25. It’s the ubiquitous power struggle, this time between record label “suits” vs. artists, in which Paisley played the hero to fans on social media over the past month by posting teasers for unreleased album tracks.
The original leak, now banned on YouTube, has been replaced by a steady stream of content leading up to the album’s shelf date. Most recently (Aug. 20), Paisley enlisted the help of the Ellen Show to release the lyric video to his self-proclaimed favorite song on the album, “Shattered Glass.” The single, about the struggle women face against the glass ceiling, became available for digital purchase at midnight.
With the social media hashtag #leakingmoonshine, Paisley has additionally sought social partnerships for the release with Chevrolet, racecar driver Jeff Gordon, athlete Aaron Rodgers, Bobby Bones, Sherri Shepherd, Jenny McCarthy, Kermit the Frog, NASA, Dave Ramsey and Ludacris. Various email, voicemail, and phone exchanges with his label Sony Nashville and management Fitzgerald/Hartley pair with many of the “unplanned” promotion leaks online.
Fans can pre-order Moonshine in the Trunk and immediately receive the songs “River Bank,” “Crushin’ It,” “Perfect Storm,” “Country Nation,” and “Shattered Glass,” which are available for individual purchase. The album will be available in-full the day after Sunday’s (Aug. 24) Rising Star season finale, for which Paisley is a guest expert on the ABC-TV show.

Kenny  Chesney scored the top Country track debut with “Flora Bama” surfing in with 29K.
Taylor Swift confirmed Tuesday that her Oct. 27 release, 1989, will be her first official pop album—meaning its sales numbers, which are likely to be huge, won’t count toward Country’s album sales tally.
At this point, Country album sales are down -19.4 percent compared to last year, having sold 18.7 million units YTD. (By comparison, overall album sales are down -14.5 percent.) Can Country’s major releases help the genre’s album sales total rebound before year’s end? The line up includes: Aug. 25 Brad Paisley; Sept. 9 Lee Brice, Dustin Lynch; Sept. 16 Tim McGraw; Sept. 23 Kenny Chesney; Sept. 30 Lady Antebellum, Blake Shelton; Oct. 7 Jason Aldean; Oct. 14 Florida Georgia Line; Oct. 21 Little Big Town; and a Garth Brooks project expected around Thanksgiving.
