CRS News: UMG Luncheon, Digital Rodeo Party

CRS 2011 will be held March 2-4, 2011, at the Nashville Convention Center.
>>For the second year in a row, Universal Music Group Nashville is hosting a lunchtime show for CRS attendees at the Ryman Auditorium.
The event on Wed., March 2, 2011, will feature Gary Allan, Laura Bell Bundy, Hayes Carll, Coldwater Jane, Easton Corbin, Billy Currington, Dani Flowers, Vince Gill, Mallary Hope, Jamey Johnson, Josh Kelley, Randy Montana, Kip Moore, David Nail, Randy Rogers Band, Ashton Shepherd, Canaan Smith, Sugarland, Josh Turner and Lee Ann Womack, as well as special guests.
The UMG Nashville luncheon kicks off at 12:30 p.m. with a “to-go” barbecue lunch served at the Convention Center.
“When we planned the UMG CRS show last year, we had no idea how well it would be received,” says UMG Sr. VP Promotion and host of last year’s event, Royce Risser. “Each artist performed one acoustic song on the historic stage of the Ryman, creating a number of magical moments that people still talk about a year later.”
“The feedback from both attendees and our artists was overwhelming and seems to indicate that this is the start of a new marquee event at CRS,” continues Risser. “Unfortunately, Luke Lewis chose the same host as last year. Sorry about that.”
>>Digital Rodeo will host the Country Radio Seminar wrap-up event on Friday, March 4 at Cadillac Ranch. The show typically features about two-dozen Country artists performing material from a different genre or theme—this year’s focus is the British Invasion.
For the third year in a row, the social networking and Country lifestyle site DigitalRodeo.com is partnering with Country Radio Broadcasters, Inc. to sponsor the event. It kicks off at 10:30 p.m. CST or immediately following the CRS New Faces of Country Music® Show and Dinner.
The line-up for CRS luncheons sponsored by Sony Music Nashville and Capitol Nashville will be announced this week.
Only credentialed CRS attendees are permitted to attend these events.
And don’t forget about MusicRow’s invitation-only CRS party featuring Colt Ford and Joanna Smith on Tues., March 1.
A reduced $399 Early Bird CRS registration rate is in effect through Friday, Feb. 18. The On-Site rate increases to $499 on Feb. 19. Contact the Country Radio Broadcasters at (615) 327-4487 or at www.CRB.org for registration materials.

Loss Named Valory Promo Boss

Chris Loss

Chris Loss has been promoted to VP Promotion for The Valory Music Co. effective immediately. This follows the announcement of Jon Loba’s exit from the label today to run Broken Bow. Loss previously served as Dir. National Promotion/West Coast Promotion for Valory, as well as Dir. of West Coast Promotion for Lyric Street prior to that. Loss is currently based in Arizona, but will move to Nashville with this promotion.
“I am incredibly grateful to Scott for the opportunity to lead such a talented team. The bar has been set high by the entire Big Machine Label Group and Valory will have its best year ever in 2011,” says Loss. “Thanks to Country Radio, Reba is red-hot, Justin Moore is next-level bound and our team is about to deliver you an act who we know will be on the 2012 CRS New Faces Show.”
In addition to Loss, Valory has promoted George Briner to VP of Field Promotion and JoJamie Hahr to National Dir. of Field Promotion. Both will retain regional promotion duties in addition to their new responsibilities.
Loss can be reached at 615-324-7064 or [email protected]. Briner can be reached at 615-324-7782 or [email protected]. Hahr can be reached at 615-324-7787 or [email protected].

The girls are also slated to play the Grand Ole Opry with Toby Keith and Trace Adkins tomorrow (1/29) and they just finished shooting the video for their new single “A Little Less Comfortable,” which is currently at No. 63 on the CountryBreakout Chart. SPIN ZONE
The battle for CountryBreakout No. 1 song is heating up, but Luke Bryan’s “Someone Else Calling You Baby” remains on top for a second consecutive week. But a trio of superstar hits—Blake Shelton’s “Who Are You When I’m Not Looking,” Lady Antebellum’s “Hello World,” and Taylor Swift’s “Back To December”—is right behind Bryan, and will soon be competing for No. 1 bragging rights. That is, of course, if Brad Paisley’s “This Is Country Music” doesn’t leapfrog them all. “This Is Country Music” gains 258 spins and leaps up to No. 7.
One of this week’s big surprises is Englishman David Bradley’s “Hard Time Movin’ On,” featuring guest vocals by Rodney Crowell. The song has clearly won some fans in the programming world, as it gains 137 spins to earn our biggest debut at No. 69. Also making an impressive debut is Davis Music Group’s Jacob Lyda with “I’m Doin’ Alright.” Reporters gave it an extra 157 spins and propelled it on the chart at No. 73.

Tall Tree Records new duo Jenny and Ashley recently visited Glen Lance at WSKR/Pulaski to promote their new single “Indescribable.” (L-R): Jenny, Lance and Ashley.

A series of new 2011 singles are all rapidly gaining momentum. Miranda Lambert’s “Heart Like Mine” charges up to No. 19, followed by Zac Brown Band’s “Colder Weather” at No. 20. Label cousins Rascal Flatts and The Band Perry are also on the move with “I Won’t Let Go” (No. 28) and “You Lie” (No. 31), respectively. And rounding out the Top 40 after only two weeks on the chart is Reba’s “If I Were A Boy.”
Frozen Playlists: KSED, KYKX, KYYK, WBKR, WBYZ, WQNZ

Role Reversal For Radio Promoters Matthew Hargis, Bobby Young

Bobby Young (L) and Matthew Hargis (R)

Radio promotion executives Matthew Hargis and Bobby Young have essentially traded posts. Hargis has left his role handling southeast regional promotion for Capitol Records Nashville, and joined Republic Nashville as National Director of Promotion. In turn, Young has exited his post as Republic’s National Promotion Director to fill the vacancy left by Hargis at Capitol. They take office on Feb. 1.
In his new role, Hargis will oversee all aspects of the radio promotion department and radio activities for the Republic Nashville roster, which includes Martina McBride, The Band Perry, Eli Young Band and Sunny Sweeney. “I am honored and thrilled to be joining this stellar team of professionals led by Scott Borchetta and Jimmy Harnen, says Hargis. “The Republic Nashville artist roster is bursting with talent that continues to blaze new trails with fresh, exciting music.”
The move reunites Hargis with former colleague, turned Republic Nashville President Harnen. “As long as I have known and worked with Matthew, he has always been the person who delivered solutions…a ‘go to guy,'” says Harnen. “It’s like having a Sherman tank in your garage. He has a unique way of looking at any situation and providing a fresh approach, not to mention he is one of the nicest human beings you will ever meet.”
Hargis will report directly to Harnen and can be reached at 615-324-7903 or [email protected].

Bobby Young will be based in Nashville and report directly to Capitol’s VP Promotion Shane Allen. He will join the promotion team in working Capitol artists Lady Antebellum, Dierks Bentley, Keith Urban, Darius Rucker, Luke Bryan, Little Big Town and more.

“I am more than thrilled that Bobby has agreed to join our family at Capitol,” said Sr. VP, Promotion, Steve Hodges. “I couldn’t think of a better qualified candidate, anywhere! His vast knowledge of the ever-changing record business and his extensive promotion experience will be a tremendous asset, not only to the promotion department, but to our entire building.”
“I’ve admired the winning work ethic and champion environment at Capitol Records Nashville, and I consider the opportunity to be a member of this team and to work for Steve Hodges and Shane Allen second to none,” said Young.  “It’s a real blessing. I’m looking forward to not only working with Capitol’s great roster of artists, but also to being back in the Southeast working hands on with my friends in radio.”

MusicRow CRS Meet & Greet Performers Revealed

Sitting down? You may want to brace yourself for this news.
This year’s MusicRow CRS Meet & Greet and CountryBreakout Awards is going to be a doozie, and those who miss out will likely spend the rest of their days in regret and shame.
We are extremely pleased to feature emerging talents Colt Ford (Average Joe’s Ent.) and Joanna Smith (Columbia Nashville). Both entertainers hail from the great state of Georgia, but are miles apart on the stylistic continuum. Together they represent the wildly diverse talent parameters included under the big tent of modern country music.
Colt Ford’s unique party-starting hybrid of country-rock and hip-hop, combined with a high-energy live show, has catapulted him into a celebrated indie star. Originally from Athens, GA, the former pro-golfer turned musician built a massive following through relentless touring, eventually selling over 150k units of his debut Rollin’ Through The Country. His 2010 sophomore album Chicken & Biscuits hit No. 8 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart and features an all-star list of collaborators like Joe Nichols, Randy Houser, DMC (of Run DMC), James Otto and more. Ford feels the key to his success has been in bringing something real to his shows and recordings.
“I tried to write songs I would like and that I thought people like me would like,” he says. “I wrote about things they know about, and I can’t tell you how often someone will say, ‘Are you from my home town?’ I’ll say no and they’ll say, ‘You must be, because you write about exactly who we are and what we do.’ That’s the connection. I just tried to be honest and real, and this is what happened. They know I’m one of them.”
Joanna Smith, raised on a farm in tiny Crestview unincorporated, GA, is a captivating young traditionalist, proudly displaying her rural roots in songs like “Farm Girl” and “Gettin’ Married.” After arriving in Nashville, she honed her live performance chops in front of the rowdy nighttime crowds at legendary Broadway hang Tootsie’s. Her upcoming debut album for Columbia features  her new single “Georgia Mud,” as well as a special guest appearance from another beloved traditionalist, Patty Loveless. Like Colt Ford, Smith’s music is an authentic extension of her upbringing and the sounds that inspire her.
“I write like I talk,” Smith says. “It’s just the way that I express myself and the most honest I can be. Songs that have a true story inspiring them are the songs that reach people. I play them and I watch the crowd. I see what they react to and that helps me write better songs.”
This special invitation-only event takes place Tuesday, March 1 leading up to Country Radio Seminar 2011.

Skyville Adds Herring

Skyville Records managing partners Paul Worley, Glen Morgan and Wally Wilson have named Kevin Herring President of Skyville Records.
“I can hardly wait to get started!” declares Herring. “Few people have made bigger or better records than Paul Worley, from Lady Antebellum and The Dixie Chicks to Martina McBride. He knows hit music and recognizes superstar talent.  Paul will provide hit music, of that I have no doubt!”

Kevin Herring

Herring’s first priority at Skyville Records will be hiring and guiding an A-LIST promotion staff to work Stealing Angels and all future Skyville artists to country radio.
With more than twenty years experience in radio promotion, including tenures at Mercury Records and most recently as VP of National Promotion for The Walt Disney Company’s Lyric Street Records, Herring has been an integral part of breaking some of country music’s most well-known acts, including Rascal Flatts, Shania Twain, and Toby Keith.
Kevin Herring can be reached at 615-320-7052 or [email protected].
About Skyville Records: Industry veterans Paul Worley, Wally Wilson and Glen Morgan joined forces in 2004 to launch Skyline Publishing. Wayne Halper joined the organization in 2009 as head of business and legal affairs. After many years of successful chart action, the partners founded Skyville Records in 2010, with a focus and emphasis towards toward recognizing and nurturing the talents of new artists and artist/songwriters. Long time music industry executive Kevin Herring serves as the label’s president.

Weekly Chart Report (1/21/11)

Lee Brice visited with NashvilleCountryClub.com's Editor Leslie Armstrong to discuss his current single "Beautiful Every Time."

SPIN ZONE
Three weeks into 2011, we are starting to see some movement on the CountryBreakout Chart. Luke Bryan’s long, patient climb with “Someone Else Calling You Baby” is rewarded by finally ascending to the No. 1 position. Bryan has over 150 spins on the No. 2 song, Blake Shelton’s “Who Are You When I’m Not Looking,” but look to see it challenging the top spot soon, competing with Lady Antebellum’s No. 4 “Hello World” and Taylor Swift’s No. 5 “Back To December.”
Elsewhere, newly released singles are starting to pop as programmers move older titles into lighter rotations. Miranda Lambert’s “Heart Like Mine” gets a big boost, moving 35-27. Similarly, Zac Brown Band’s “Colder Weather” leaps up to No. 29, and Rascal Flatts is close behind at No. 32 with “I Won’t Let Go.” Also quickly advancing is The Band Perry’s “You Lie,” which makes a 54-37 jump in its third week.
Reba’s “If I Were A Boy” earns a huge debut, landing at No. 52 for its first appearance. In the final slot at No. 80 is sister trio Carter’s Chord, whose just-released “A Little Less Comfortable” picked up 120 spins to sneak on the chart. Also debuting are Jayme Lynn Scott’s “No Explainin’ Love” at No. 75, Sandra Piller’s “Days Like These” at No. 78, and LeAnn Rimes’ “Crazy Woman” at No. 79.

(L-R): Brett Eldredge, WDSY PD Stoney Richards, John Oates and Warner Music Nashville Pres./CEO John Esposito at the Pittsburgh Steelers v. Baltimore Ravens playoff game.

RADIO NEWS
Adelle Borchetta has joined McVay New Media as VP/Social Media. Borchetta most recently worked with Lofton Creek Records before launching her own Adelle Borchetta Promotion in 2008. Reach her at [email protected].
Hoss Michaels will join Clear Channel’s KXKT and KTWI/Omaha as Music Director, starting Wednesday, January 26. Michaels spent the previous six years as PD for KZKX/Lincoln, NE. Michaels will also be handling KXKT middays. KXKT/KTWI PD Erik Johnson says, “We couldn’t be happier to have Hoss join our team. His dedication to community and solid relationships in country music will help us build on our 4-book streak at #1 P25-54.”
