Charlie Cook On Air: Country Climbing in PPM Markets

Charlie Cook

Charlie Cook

This is a “well, darn things are going great this summer for country music and country radio” article.
Country radio stations are leaping to the top of the pile in PPM markets. I don’t mean just markets like Dallas, where KPLX is inching its way back to the top of the heap, or Atlanta, where both stations are healthy, or Indianapolis where both stations are as hot as climbing the “Soldiers and Sailors” Monument on an August afternoon.
No, Country stations are at the top in markets like Milwaukee (to be fair Kerry Wolfe has accomplished this many times). Ditto for Tim Roberts in Detroit on WYCD. In Pittsburgh, where the only thing bigger than Country music this year is the Pirates, and Boston where the ‘A’ in Aldean is pronounced with a broad ‘A’. The concert season has helped drive ticket sales and radio ratings.
The difference between the Boston and Georgia accents did not stop over 70,000 New Englanders from filling Fenway Park (also pronounced with a broad ‘A’) to see Jason Aldean, Miranda Lambert, et al. It was one of the most electric nights they have seen since, well, I don’t know when, because the Red Sox won both recent World Series titles (2004 and 2007). This was followed by Taylor Swift coming to town at the end of July for two dates.
The charge from the concert season is bigger than I can ever remember it being. The CMA Fest, in Nashville, had its biggest crowd near the beginning of the Summer and things have rolled on since. CMA Music Festival: Country’s Night To Rock, which aired Monday night, set viewing records for ABC-TV, up 44 percent over last year’s show and set a record for the network overall since it began airing the special in 2006.
Not only Aldean and Swift, but Kenny Chesney, Luke Bryan, Brad Paisley, Keith Urban, Eric Church and Zac Brown Band have all been apostles of live music this summer. All of the big acts are out this summer. All of them are creating incredible excitement from city to city. That kind of excitement would not be possible if not for the fact that the music is as good today as it has ever been for radio.
I have written before that Tim McGraw and Blake Shelton have released, arguably, the best music of their careers this time. And, kudos to Warner Brothers Records for deftly handling the release of Shelton’s singles this time. It seems like they are giving radio enough time to expose a song and not coming right on top of the chart-peaked song. Radio always has a fresh Blake Shelton song and the listeners are responding to all of the music.
The music this summer has been the best in a long time. I hesitate to do a list for fear of leaving someone out, but Florida Georgia Line, Hunter Hayes, The Band Perry and Randy Houser have all set personal bests this summer. And have introduced their music to a whole new group of fans as parts of bigger tours.
“Cruise” has become an anthem, enough so that FGL was spotlighted on the Teen Choice Awards and fit right in with One Direction and Selena Gomez. Hayes came off the Carrie Underwood tour and has not missed a beat playing fairs and medium venues from coast to coast. He, and FGL, are guaranteed pop radio play going forward and that is going to help expand the genre even more.
Everything swings back so there is no guarantee next summer can be this big for the concert season or for country radio, but the format has laid the seeds with younger listeners, so the music and the experience leaves them with a new attitude about the format.
If WKLB is now a button in 10 percent more cars this summer because of the excitement, at least the format is in the game today where two years ago it might not have been.

Underwood Becomes Voice of Opry Radio Campaign

carrieunderwood

Carrie Underwood performs on the Grand Ole Opry.

Carrie Underwood is the voice of a new Grand Ole Opry radio campaign that is set to begin airing next week in regional drive markets, as well as on the Opry’s nationally syndicated radio program America’s Opry Weekend.
In the campaign, Underwood reflects on her recent 5th anniversary celebration as an Opry member and also invites radio audiences to visit Nashville and to stay connected to the Opry via its mobile app.
During an Opry performance earlier this summer, Underwood viewed an on-stage video reel of the past five years of Opry appearances. “It’s so hard to believe it’s been five years, but what an amazing five years it has been. Just watching that video, I was getting a little teary-eyed, thinking about how I felt when all of that was happening. And I still feel that blessed and that honored to be on this stage,” said Underwood.
Underwood performed her seventh Opry sold-out show of the summer this past Saturday, Aug. 10.
It was also recently announced that Underwood will reunite with Brad Paisley as co-hosts of the 47th Annual CMA Awards on Wednesday, Nov. 6. The singer-songwriter also revealed that she is teaming with Nicole by OPI for an Underwood-inspired line of nail polish.

Charlie Cook On Air: The Boomerang Generation

Charlie Cook

Charlie Cook

Some interesting demographic information was presented late last month to TV executives, and it has a considerable effect on radio.
The 18-49 demographic is a smaller percentage of the overall population in numbers. This according to research presented recently by CBS-TV researcher David F. Poltrack, in defense of CBS television having the oldest median viewer, 56.1 years. People 18-49 make up only 55 percent of all adults. A decade ago this number was 62 percent.
The number that stunned me was 82 percent of 18-24-year-olds live in someone else’s home. Most likely their parents. From someone who left home at 18 and never went back, this percentage surprises me but this number is really scary. Fifty-six percent of those 25-34 years old are in a similar situation.
I am from the baby boomer generation. The 25-34 year olds are being referred to as boomerangs. They just keep coming back. I know this is an impact from the economics of today’s workplace. I don’t mean to joke about this situation. I am sure a 32-year-old male is not happy to be living back with his parents. In many cases he may have brought along a family.
How does this impact radio? Well in PPM households it is all in or none in. So now a household could now include ages 6-65. A child, her parents and grandparents. If you don’t think this happens often, look around. Fifty-six percent of 25-34 year olds are not living in their own domicile. That is a big number.
I would also suggest you think about how many radios are in homes today. In the good old days, there was a radio in every room and the listener would follow the morning show through their routine. From the bedroom, to the bathroom to the kitchen and then to the car. Do you think this is today’s routine? Add the fact that there are a number of tastes being represented in the average household today and the one thing they do agree on is Good Morning America in the living area.
With the recent death of Kidd Kraddick, the impact a really good radio personality can have on listeners came to everyone’s attention. Reading the posts and listening to KHKS-FM the first workday after his death proved a good radio personality can move the masses. Kidd was the kind of talent that would actually be able to appeal to the wide spectrum of ages in today’s household.
Can your morning show? If the answer is no, it is not too late to make the changes necessary to do so. We talk about identifying your listener so the staff can focus on him/her. Maybe now we need to think about households and how we can provide a morning show so entertaining no one wants to make another choice. Content, content, content. Planning, planning, planning.
I know the radio listener is going to make the overall choice of their favorite station based upon the music you play, but morning shows can make a difference no matter the format. Growing up, I did not have a choice of which station to listen to if my father was around. He chose the station. Listening to the morning show on WXYZ as a kid, playing music I could not stand still led me to my career. The morning disc jockey was funny, warm and he knew the city of Detroit like the back of his hand.
A morning show can make that kind of difference in a household, but it takes real effort directed at every demo in the house every day.

Sony Nashville Customizes Radio Experience With QUU Interactive

sonySony Music Nashville has entered into a first-of-its-kind partnership with Seattle-based media technology company Quu Interactive. The company transforms radio into a fully interactive and customized medium across computers, mobile devices, and, for the first time, within vehicles. In its first deal with a major label, Quu will utilize its existing “Liner Notes” network of hundreds of nationwide radio stations, station websites and mobile apps to complement station airplay with timely and pertinent artist information, in real time. The new interactive service launched today.
Quu’s “Liner Notes” service also currently integrates seamlessly with radio station RDS, the web, and mobile platforms, allowing the same customized artist message provided by the label to span across all three platforms instantaneously tied to the song’s spin on the radio. Radio station websites and mobile platforms that are a part of Quu’s “Liner Notes” service also feature customized branded environments tied to each artist, including artist pics, music videos, and additional pertinent information. “Liner Notes” also provides the ability to display ads relevant to the artist that is playing.
In addition to the vehicle interior radio display, which often includes station and artist names, Quu’s customization offering enables Sony Music Nashville to pre-program and geo-target information on local tour dates, media appearances, breaking news, album releases, point-of-sale information and more, tied to an artist’s song as it is playing on the radio. The service also uses Quu’s synchronization technology, which gives it the capability to feed messages directly from the artist’s existing social platforms, including Twitter, giving fans a new way to hear from or about their favorite artists as they are listening to them in their cars and through participating websites and mobile apps. Additional terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“Quu’s service provides an enormous promotional opportunity for our artists and the label to customize and geo-target an artist’s message with a 360-degree approach, bringing together the full fan experience of albums, tours, artist offerings, and information in a new and innovative way utilizing the outstanding reach of radio,” said Gary Overton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Music Nashville. “Now, as consumers listen to Kenny Chesney, Miranda Lambert, Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood on their car radios, one of the main points of radio airplay, we have the ability to inform them about where to see or hear from their favorite Sony Music Nashville artists next.”
