Country Hall Honors Murrah

Prolific songwriter and successful music publisher Roger Murrah will be honored on March 6 as part of the Museum’s quarterly programming series Poets and Prophets: Legendary Country Songwriters. The 1:30 PM program, which will be held in the Museum’s Ford Theater, is included with Museum admission and free to Museum members. The program will also be streamed live at www.countrymusichalloffame.org.

Museum Editor Michael Gray will conduct an in-depth, one-on-one interview with Murrah, illustrated with audiovisual elements from the Museum’s collection, including recordings, photos and film clips. Immediately following the program, he will sign autographs in the Museum Store.

Roger Murrah

Born in 1946 and raised on a family farm in Athens, Alabama, Murrah was elected to the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005. He ranks among country music’s most prolific songwriters, with hit songs spanning over four decades. Murrah has written or co-written a host of memorable country songs, including “Don’t Rock the Jukebox” (Alan Jackson), “Goodbye Time” (Conway Twitty, Blake Shelton), “It’s a Little Too Late” (Tanya Tucker), “High Cotton” (Alabama), “Life’s Highway” (Steve Wariner), “Only Love” (Wynonna Judd), “Ozark Mountain Jubilee” (O

ak Ridge Boys), “Where Corn Don’t Grow” (Waylon Jennings, Travis Tritt) and many more. Murrah also co-wrote Al Jarreau’s breakthrough pop and R&B hit “We’re in This Love Together.” Currently Murrah is serving as Bug Music’s Senior Vice President, Nashville.

The Poets and Prophets series honors songwriters who have made significant contributions to country music history. Previous Poets and Prophets honorees include Bill Anderson, Matraca Berg, Bobby Braddock, Jerry Chesnut, Hank Cochran, Dean Dillon, John D. Loudermilk, Bob McDill, Curly Putman, Whitey Shafer, Jeffrey Steele and Craig Wiseman.

ole Publishing Gets “Cat In The Hat”

Under a new deal with Random House Children’s Entertainment, ole music publishing will co-own all compositions in the new series The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That starring Dr. Seuss’ famous character from the classic children’s book, The Cat in the Hat. Developed as a co-production by Canada’s Portfolio Entertainment and the U.K.’s Collingwood O’Hare Entertainment, the series will air on PBS KIDS and will star the voice of actor/comedian, Martin Short.

Random House Children’s Books will also publish a full line of books to support the television series launch and will oversee a limited slate of licensing and merchandising efforts.

SESAC Ups Ellen Truley To VP

SESAC has promoted longtime employee Ellen Bligh Truley to Vice President, Corporate Relations. She has worked for the performing rights organization since 1996, starting as a Advertising/Promotion Manager. SESAC Pres./COO Pat Collins announced her promotion from her previous role of Associate Vice President, Corporate Relations.

As VP, Truley will oversee SESAC’s  advertising, promotion, sponsorships, website, online marketing and corporate magazine endeavors. Additionally, she will be instrumental in the formulation of SESAC’s future marketing and creative strategies.

Truley is a Nashville native who graduated from Middle Tennessee State University with a degree in Advertising/Journalism. She is a member of NARAS, CMA and ACM.

Cherry Heart Starts Marketing Division

Cherry Heart Music & Entertainment has expanded to include an entertainment marketing division focusing on securing sponsorship deals for artist clients. The company reports that it has agreements in the works for some of Nashville’s top Country artists.

“Sponsorship opportunities are becoming increasingly valuable in the music business as more and more artists are turning to alternative revenue streams,” says Jennifer Rose Parker, Cherry Heart Senior VP Entertainment Marketing. “We recognized that there was a market that existed for these type of arrangements, and Cherry Heart had the vision to make a specialized department to fill that niche. ole Signs Hitmaker Rick Giles

Prolific Nashville hit songwriter Rick Giles has signed to fast-growing independent music publisher ole. The deal  includes the acquisition of over 250 of Giles’ songs, as well as his administration and future works. Among the songs acquired under the agreement are “Easy As You Go,” which appears on George Strait’s most recent album Twang, and “Can’t Tell Me Nothin’” from Tim McGraw’s 2004 quintuple platinum album Live Like You Were Dying.

Giles has a long list of cuts by some of modern country’s biggest stars including Rascal Flatts (“Praying for Daylight”), Reba McEntire (“Is There Life Out There”) and Terri Clark (“I Want To Do It All”). Among his other numerous cuts are songs recorded by Tanya Tucker, Eddie Rabbitt, Charley Pride and The Oak Ridge Boys.

Giles’ connection to ole comes after several years of self-representation. “While most of the companies in Nashville are holding steady or going backwards, ole is moving forward and that’s what I wanted to be a part of. This is the perfect fit for me,” says Giles.

Arts & Business Council Sponsors Law Clinic

The Arts & Business Council of Greater Nashville and the Tennessee Bar Association Sports & Entertainment Law Section are hosting a Nashville Entertainment Law Clinic in the SunTrust Community Room at the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum on Saturday, February 20 from 9:00 AM-1:00 PM. At the clinic, songwriters are welcome to sign up for a 30-minute slot to receive pro-bono legal advice from entertainment lawyers, who will answer questions about intellectual property matters, including copyrights, trademarks, licensing and related law issues. Key West Songwriters Festival Ready To Roll

keys2Final preparations are underway for this year’s Key West Songwriters Festival, scheduled for Wednesday, April 28 – Sunday, May 2. Presented by Better Angels Music and benefiting the Muzak Heart & Soul Foundation, the  annual festival, now in its 15th year, will feature more than 100 top-tier songwriters.

Full band concerts will bookend the 2010 festival, with Universal South artist Randy Houser kicking things off with a free concert at the Ocean Key Pier on Wednesday, April 28, from 6-8 p.m. The Raul Malo Band will perform at the Ocean Key Pier Saturday, May 1.

Crook & Chase On WSIX; Paradiso Hires King

ccNashville’s Big 98/WSIX-FM has added The Crook & Chase Countdown to the station’s lineup, starting yesterday (1/24). The Nashville-based program will air Sundays from 6 – 10 p.m. CT. Each week, Lorianne Crook and Charlie Chase count down the top 30 Country music songs and interview the genre’s superstars and rising artists. The show is nationally syndicated by Premiere Radio Networks, and can be heard on nearly 200 stations.
