Lee Thomas Miller Officially Launches Campaign For U.S. Congress

Songwriter Lee Thomas Miller has officially launched his campaign for U.S Congress’ seventh district today (Nov. 14), following last week’s announcement from BMI’s Mike O’Neill.

The son of Kentucky tobacco farmer and a small town librarian has become an award winning songwriter who lives in Williamson County in Tennessee with his wife Jana and their four kids, all of whom attend public schools in their community.

He has penned seven No. 1 songs, 12 top 10 songs and earned three Grammy nominations with artists including Trace Adkins, Garth Brooks, Brad Paisley, George Strait, Jamey Johnson and Chris Stapleton. Most people know his hit songs, like “In Color,” “The Impossible,” “You’re Gonna Miss This,” and “I’m Still a Guy.”

Miller recently stepped down from his former post as president of Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) in order to run for the seat. He has tirelessly worked with NSAI to defend the rights and livelihood on Capitol Hill of the “smallest small business”—songwriters.

Houston Livestock Show And Rodeo Launches Digital Ticketing, Secondary Marketplace

Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo will implement a digital ticketing delivery method — Flash Seats digital tickets by AXS — and an official secondary marketplace for RodeoHouston for 2018.

“We are excited to provide Flash Seats to all of our RodeoHouston fans,” said Joel Cowley, Rodeo president and CEO. “The use of Flash Seats and the secondary market will provide better customer service to our loyal season ticket buyers who will now be able to resell their unused seats to enthusiastic fans in a safe and secure environment. This change to our previous ticket resale policy allows us to adapt to new technology and user needs.”

Flash Seats digital tickets allows for an easy transfer of tickets to family, friends and co-workers, and will be the only method of delivery for individual tickets to all 20 RodeoHouston performances in 2018.

Additionally, the RodeoHouston Marketplace will give individual ticket holders a secure online portal where they can resell and purchase Rodeo tickets with confidence, and will provide buyers with the security of knowing that tickets purchased on the RodeoHouston Marketplace are valid for entry. The RodeoHouston Marketplace will open to the public in early December.

Garth Brooks was previously announced as a headliner for the 2018 RodeoHouston. The full RodeoHouston lineup will be announced Thursday, Jan. 4, and tickets for the remaining Rodeo performances will go on sale Thursday, Jan. 11, via rodeohouston.com.

YouTube And Ticketmaster Team To Promote Ticket Sales For U.S. Concerts

YouTube has partnered with Ticketmaster to allow musical artists to sell tickets to U.S. concerts via their YouTube videos. The video site began featuring numerous artists’ upcoming U.S. tour dates on videos on the video site, including concerts for Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, The Chainsmokers, and more.

The concert listings (including dates and venues) appear in a section beneath the video description on videos in artist’s official YouTube channels. The tour dates appear on both desktop and mobile apps. They also feature a direct link to Ticketmaster.com so fans can purchase tickets.

According to YouTube, the feature will soon expand globally.

Save The Date: 2018 MusicRow Country Radio Meet & Greet and CountryBreakout Awards

MusicRow, Nashville’s leading trade publication, is proud to announce the date for its 2018 invite-only Country Radio Meet & Greet and CountryBreakout Awards, on Monday, Feb. 5, 2018.

The afternoon event occurs before Country Radio Seminar which will attract radio broadcasters from across the country for events Feb. 5-7, 2018.

The event will include presentations of the annual MusicRow CountryBreakout Awards, recognizing artists who earned the most airplay on the MusicRowCountryBreakout Chart during the preceding year. For 16 years, the CountryBreakout Chart has led the market for country radio’s secondary stations. Additionally, performances will be made from some of country music’s most promising rising artists.

In-depth profiles of the yet-to-be-revealed awards winners will be included in the February/March 2016 edition of MusicRow Magazine, set to debut at the awards ceremony. Copies of the print issue will be available for attendees.

RIAA Reminder: December Early Certification Closing Deadline

The RIAA will be closing the books for Gold & Platinum certifications early, on Wednesday, Dec. 13. Following that date, the RIAA will not accept any requests to certify any titles until after the first of January 2018.

In an effort to allow Q4 certification submissions, the organization will temporarily suspend the 30-day physical album release requirement as shown below:

  • Released by Friday 11/10/17 – eligible for certification beginning Friday 12/1/17
  • Released by Friday 11/17/17 – eligible for certification beginning Friday 12/8/17

BMG Appoints EVP Recorded Music To Work Alongside BBR Music Group

Based in Los Angeles, BMG has appointed promotion and digital marketing pioneer Tom ‘Grover’ Biery as EVP Recorded Music, to work alongside BBR Music Group.

Biery will lead BMG’s LA and New York recorded music teams, also working alongside S-Curve Records and Rise Records. He will report to Zach Katz, President Repertoire & Marketing, BMG US.

Recorded music already accounts for around 25 percent of BMG’s US revenues just four years after the company’s re-entry in the market. BMG has declared publicly its intention to be as strong in recordings as it is in music publishing where it is already the biggest international player outside the established majors.

Said Katz, “Grover is a heavy hitter with a wealth of experience navigating the new music business in both streaming and value-added physical formats. We look to him to help guide our Los Angeles and New York teams to new heights as we pursue our strategy of giving proven talent the attention it deserves while also seeking breakout successes.”

Biery comes to BMG from Concord Music Group where he recently served as SVP, Streaming Marketing, overseeing the global digital and streaming strategy for all Concord labels, catalog and artists, while managing relationships at Spotify, Apple Music, You Tube, Pandora, Amazon Music, Tidal, Deezer, Soundcloud, and more.

Biery spent 20 years at Warner Bros. Records, scaling the company from entry-level local promotion to GM/EVP. During his tenure, he helped usher in an early adoption of digital marketing and social media, re-launched the vinyl format, and was instrumental in Warner’s commitment to Record Store Day. Biery directly oversaw the marketing and career development of hundreds of Warner Bros. recording artists including The Black Keys, Madonna, Linkin Park, Muse, R.E.M., Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jason Derulo and Goo Goo Dolls.

Prior to joining Concord, Grover was a founding partner of Collective Sounds, a visionary music label where artist partners shared in all revenue streams and controlled their rights. As a manager he reinvigorated the career of reggae icon Jimmy Cliff, with a Volkswagen Super Bowl ad campaign, a main stage performance at Coachella, and a Grammy for Reggae Album of the Year.

Biery’s appointment comes on the heels of BMG recently scoring four simultaneous Top 10 chart hits in the US, its highest tally in a single week since entering the record business four years ago. Keith Urban, Florida Georgia Line, Eric Church To Headline Sixth Annual Tortuga Music Festival

Eric Church, Florida Georgia Line and Keith Urban have been announced as headliners for the sixth-annual Tortuga Music Festival April 6-8 at Fort Lauderdale Beach Park in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Other artists who will also play on the main stage throughout the festival include Brothers Osborne, Lee Brice, Dan + Shay, Russell Dickerson, Kip Moore, Chase Rice, Lucie Silvas, Sister Hazel, The Cadillac Three, Tyminski and more. The festival’s second stage, the Sunrise Stage, will host an eclectic lineup led by Snoop Dogg and including Cheap Trick, Michael Franti & Spearhead, William Michael Morgan, Muscadine Bloodline, Dylan Scott, Shaggy and Dwight Yoakam. YouTube/Google’s Lyor Cohen To Speak During Music Biz 2018

Lyor Cohen, Global Head of Music at YouTube/Google and founder of music content company 300, will keynote a featured presentation on Wednesday afternoon, May 16 during the Music Business Association’s Music Biz 2018 conference at the Omni Nashville Hotel. Cohen will discuss his career journey, his current role at YouTube/Google, and his thoughts on the future of the music business.

“Lyor’s tremendous impact on the music industry cannot be understated, from nurturing the rise of Hip-Hop at Def Jam Recordings, to pioneering the 360 deal at Warner Music Group, to merging music with tech to launch the careers of a new generation of artists at 300, to his current role at YouTube and Google,” said James Donio, President of Music Biz. “He has always had his finger on the pulse of what’s next, and we can’t wait to hear what he has to say during his Music Biz 2018 keynote.”

Cohen began his career at Rush Management in 1984, where he managed seminal hip-hop acts such as Run-D.M.C., DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, EPMD, the Beastie Boys, Eric B and Rakim, Public Enemy, Whodini, LL Cool J, and Kurtis Blow, while simultaneously serving as President of Def Jam Recordings. After selling Def Jam to Universal Music Group (UMG) in 1999, Cohen successfully merged Mercury, Island, and Def Jam Recordings to create the Island-Def Jam Music Group, expanding his work beyond Def Jam’s hip-hop roots. Cohen was then recruited by the Warner Music Group (WMG) as Chief Creative Officer in 2004, where he merged Atlantic and Elektra Records to create the Atlantic Music Group and expertly positioning WMG for growth. There, he was intimately involved in the careers of The Killers, fun., Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, The Black Keys, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Elvis Costello, Bon Jovi, Mariah Carey, Shania Twain, Ryan Adams, and Nickelback, among others.

Cohen went on to become CEO and President of Recorded Music at WMG, and is widely considered to be the father of the 360 deal. In 2013, he founded 300, a music content company that leverages innovative technology to discover, cultivate and promote rising artists with a boutique focus. There, he championed a new generation of culturally impactful artists like Young Thug, Fetty Wap, Highly Suspect, Migos, and others. He currently serves as Global Head of Music at YouTube/Google.

Music Biz 2018 will also feature the presentation of the Presidential Award for Outstanding Executive Achievement to Cary Sherman, CEO of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA); the Harry Chapin Memorial Humanitarian Award to Scooter Braun, founder of SB Projects; the Independent Spirit Award to the Radakovitz Family, owners of record store chain Dimple Records; and a Breakthrough Artist Award to Republic Records singer/songwriter Julia Michaels, with a host of other awards to be announced.

NSAI Elects Steve Bogard As President

Songwriter Steve Bogard was elected President of the Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) during a special election of the NSAI Board of Directors on Monday, Nov. 13, 2017. Bogard, who formerly served as NSAI President from 2006-2012 was elected unanimously.

Bogard filled the position vacated yesterday (Nov. 13) by the resignation of former President Lee Thomas Miller who announced he is seeking the 7th District Congressional seat previously held by Marsha Blackburn who is running for the U.S. Senate.

“It has been the honor of a lifetime to represent songwriters on music row and Capitol Hill. I think it’s important that someone step into this position who is familiar with the policy, politics and players since we are hopefully close to some legislative breakthroughs on behalf of songwriters,” Miller said as he announced his resignation to the NSAI Executive Committee, a 10-member subset of the NSAI Board. NSAI is a non-partisan organization which Miller acknowledged in his comments.

“I am flattered that the NSAI Board has the confidence in me to elect me again to this position,” Bogard said. “I knew Lee would be a good President when he was elected. He ended up being a great President,” Bogard told the NSAI Board. “We are on the cusp of some of the most important songwriter legislation in decades and I look forward to being involved in that process as NSAI President.”

Bogard is known for co-writing hit songs such as: “Carried Away” and “Carrying Your Love With Me,” recorded by George Strait, “Prayin’ for Daylight” recorded by Rascal Flatts, “Every Mile A Memory” recorded by Dierks Bentley, “Wherever You Are,” recorded by Jack Ingram and his latest No. 1 song, “Seein’ Red” recorded by Dustin Lynch.

Bogard’s term begins immediately. The next NSAI officers election will be in May of 2018.

Canadian Artist SYKAMORE Signs With Home Team Publishing

SYKAMORE (aka Jordan Ostrom), a recording artist/songwriter from Calgary, has signed with Home Team Publishing.

Known for her solo songwriting chops, the artist has taken home awards in numerous songwriting-focused events including the ATB All-Albertan Song Contest, Project Wild, and the Canadian Country Music Association’s annual Discovery Program.

“SYKAMORE. That name grabbed my attention as I was scrolling through Twitter,” said Rhett Akins who launched Home Team Publishing with artist/son Thomas Rhett, his manager Virginia Davis, and Roc Nation/Warner Chappell. “I had to check it out. I loved her music and style immediately. I’m excited we were able to bring her to Nashville to start the next chapter of her songwriting journey.”
