Nashville Songwriter Awards Set Virtual Celebration

The Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) will honor this year’s Nashville Songwriter Awards recipients via virtual celebration this fall. The 3rd Annual Nashville Songwriter Awards will be held via virtual format in lieu of the event originally scheduled at the Ryman Auditorium. The awards show has partnered again this year with City National Bank.

Past Nashville Songwriter Award recipients and honorees have included Loretta Lynn, George Strait, Ashley Gorley, Luke Combs, Bill Anderson, Josh Osborne, and more.

“While we will certainly miss the grand stage of the Ryman Auditorium for this year’s Nashville Songwriter Awards, we are excited to be able to honor this year’s Song of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, Songwriter Artist of the Year, and the ‘10 Songs I Wish I’d Written’ Awards in a unique way and to be able to tell an even deeper story for each in a virtual format,” said NSAI Senior Director of Operations Jennifer Turnbow. “We relish the opportunity to provide a sense of celebration and community amid the uncertainty of this year.”

“City National has a long tradition of supporting songwriters and the creative community,” said Lori Badgett and Diane Pearson, heads of Entertainment Banking for City National Bank in Nashville, in a joint statement. “While we wish we could celebrate in person, we are pleased that so many of our friends are being honored at this memorable virtual event. Nashville has always been a special place for creators, and we are incredibly proud to continue to support them.”

Full details about honorees, performers, and tickets for the event will be announced in the coming months.

DISClaimer Singles Reviews: Tim McGraw, Miranda Lambert, Tyler Childers, And More

This was a week of left-field surprises.

In our “comeback” department, we have a strong return to form by Mary Chapin Carpenter as well as a stunning reappearance by Skip Ewing. Tim McGraw is back, too.

Kane Brown continues his pursuit of pop music, while the formerly country-as-grits Elizabeth Cook takes a wild detour into that realm.

While Miranda Lambert‘s “Bluebird” continues its march up into the top-10, she offers a further reminder of her greatness with “Dark Bars.”

Previously noted for writing songs for others, Ross Ellis claims this week’s DisCovery Award.
Most surprising of all is the Disc of the Day prize going to outsider country-music savior Tyler Childers. Long may he sing.

TYLER RICH/Feels Like Home
Writers: Tyler Rich/Andrew DeRoberts/Jon Nite; Producer: Lindsay Rimes; Publisher: none listed; Valory
– Quite stirring and attractive. It’s like “Cheers” set to music with warmth, camaraderie and raise-a-glass good vibes. I’m in.

SAM HUNT/Hard To Forget
Writers: Josh Osborne/Shane McAnally/Ashley Gorley/Audrey Grisham/Luke Laird/Mary Jean Shurtz/Russ Hull/Sam Hunt; Producers: Luke Laird/Zach Crowell; Publisher: none listed; MCA Nashville
– Surprise! He sings it.

MARY CHAPIN CARPENTER/Secret Keepers
Writer: Mary Chapin Carpenter; Producer: Ethan Johns; Publisher: none listed; Lambent Light Records/Thirty Tigers
– Resonant and glowing, with her dark alto leading a lyric about the hidden emotional undertows that can haunt our interpersonal relationships. The rolling, country-rock tempo gives it a radio-ready sound. I have always loved this artist.

KANE BROWN ft. SWAE LEE & KHALID/Be Like That
Writers: Alexander “Eskeerdo” Izquierdo/Kane Brown/Khalid Robinson/Khalif Brown/Mike Will/Ryan Vojtesak; Producer: Charlie Handsome; Publisher: none listed; RCA Nashville
– It’s totally pop, but you have to admire its earworm catchiness. Seldom has a negative-girlfriend sentiment sounded so jaunty.

MIRANDA LAMBERT/Dark Bars
Writers: Liz Rose/Miranda Lambert; Producer: Jay Joyce; Publisher: Sony-ATV Tree/Pink Dog/Songs of Crazy Girl/Warner Tamerlane, BMI; Vanner Records/RCA Nashville
– If there was ever a doubt in your mind that she’s a country-music genius, this will erase it. A swirling meditation about embracing loneliness and facing honky-tonk truth. In a word, awesome.

ELIZABETH COOK/Perfect Girls of Pop
Writer: Elizabeth Cook; Producer: Butch Walker; Publisher: none listed; Agent Love Records/Thirty Tigers
– Disappointing. It’s a good song, but the double-tracked, overly-echoed vocal is distracting. I think the idea here is to take a shot at pop airplay, since it does have a retro ’80s, new-wave vibe. There is also a video for a track called “Bones” that is an even more overt bid for pop/rock acceptance

TIM McGRAW/Here On Earth
Writers: Chase McGill/Jessie Jo Dillon/Jon Nite; Producers: Tim McGraw/Byron Gallimore; Publisher: none listed; Big Machine Records
– Uplifting and inspirational. Music like this can bring people together. Love is the answer.

MANDY BARNETT/It’s Now or Never
Writers: Aaron Schroeder/Eduardo di Capua/Wally Gold; Producer: Fred Mollin; Publisher: Gladys/Kobalt/Aberbach/Raleigh/Universal, ASCAP/SIAE; Melody Place/BMG
– Mandy replaces Elvis’s florid, quasi-operatic reading of the 1960 song with something more sweet and intimate, while sacrificing none of her vocal power. A winner.

ROSS ELLIS/Love Blind
Writers: Allison Veltz Cruz/Ross Ellis/Zach Kale; Producer: Aaron Eshuis; Publisher: none listed; RCA Nashville
– It’s a heartfelt ballad wherein he prays that she will overlook his shortcomings and keep loving him. Quietly endearing.

TYLER CHILDERS/Country Squire
Writer: Tyler Childers; Producers: Sturgill Simpson/David Ferguson; Publisher: none listed; Hickman Holler Records/RCA Records
– The subject of the title is a 24-foot camper. He’s fixing it up to make a home for himself and his honey while a hillbilly band prances friskly behind him. As always, he’s a beacon of Real Country Music. The uptempo ditty has inspired Tyler’s first music video. It’s a cute-as-can-be, highly humorous animation.

SKIP EWING/Wyoming
Writer: Skip Ewing; Producers: Kyle Lehning/Skip Ewing; Publisher: Write On!, BMI; Write!
– This prodigiously gifted fellow had a flurry of big hits on MCA in the late 1980s. In the following decade he wrote huge songs for Collin Ray (“Love, Me”), Randy Travis (“If I Didn’t Have You”), Kenny Chesney (“You Had Me From Hello”), Diamond Rio (“I Believe”), Bryan White (“Someone Else’s Star”), Clint Black (“Something That We Do”) and more. In 2013, he turned his back on it all, sold his belongings and vanished from music. This is the title tune of his comeback CD, a lovely, tuneful, wistful recollection of wanderlust and lost love. The man can still cast a musical spell. Welcome home, son.

Previously, Benny and Paul Brown headed Nashville’s indie music company, BBR Music Group, home of Broken Bow Records, Stoney Creek Records and Wheelhouse Records. Founded in 1999, under Brown’s leadership, Broken Bow Records had more than 30 No. 1 songs, including Craig Morgan’s “That’s What I Love About Sunday,” “She’s Country,” by Jason Aldean and Thompson Square’s “Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not.”

BMI, Taylor Guitars, Shure Join Forces For New “My #1 Moment” Video Series

BMI, Taylor Guitars and Shure are collaborating on a new social media video series, “My #1 Moment,” which captures intimate versions of BMI writers performing their first No. 1 song at home. The series debuted on Taylor Guitar’s Instagram channel on July 8, and features songwriters Michael Hardy, Devin Dawson, Russell Dickerson and more sharing the stories behind the songs that took them to the top of the country charts for the very first time.

This morning BMI launched the latest episode with Ben Burgess, recent Big Loud signee and writer of “Whiskey Glasses.”

“BMI consistently supports our songwriters and is unwavering in our effort to shed light on their talent. We are thrilled to enhance our longstanding partnership with Taylor Guitars and excited to welcome Shure to the fold,” says Mason Hunter, AVP, Creative, Nashville.  “These unique segments are the perfect way to continue to highlight our first-time number one writers and provide them with an opportunity to showcase their talents on a beautiful instrument and with quality sound.”

Since 2018, BMI has partnered with Taylor Guitars to honor a writer’s first No. 1 with a brand-new guitar. Recorded using a Shure MV88+ Video Kit and played on the writer’s commemorative Taylor 210e Deluxe guitar, the intimate, acoustic “My #1 Moment” series performance will offer viewers a unique opportunity to hear these songs from the songwriters who brought them to life.

“We love building guitars that serve as inspirational tools for writing songs,” said Tim Godwin, Taylor’s Director of Artist and Entertainment Relations. “We have been working with BMI for a few years, and this campaign feels like a natural extension of our partnership and an excellent way to honor these songwriters. We’re excited to have our friends at Shure tie it all together since they make it easy to create great-sounding videos from your phone.”

Blanco Brown swaggered onto the music scene as the mastermind behind the international viral sensation “The Git Up.” Though he had been working in studios and songwriting for years, the track was his breakthrough as an artist. His album, Honeysuckle & Lightning Bugs, is inspired by his youth growing up in Atlanta during the school year and rural Georgia during the summer, along the way learning to value diverse styles of music.

Gabby Barrett scored big with her blockbuster hit “I Hope,” which she co-wrote, and continues the momentum with her debut album, Goldmine, and follow-up single “The Good Ones.” Upon release, Goldmine earned the most first-week debut album streams for any country act in history. Barrett built a strong independent touring base, performing more than 130 shows a year in 2017, before rising to national prominence as a finalist on ABC’s American Idol.

HARDY continued gaining ground as a songwriter and artist during the last year. His album HIXTAPE VOL. 1 welcomes 17 all-star collaborators such as Keith Urban and Thomas Rhett, and features rising single “One Beer” with Lauren Alaina and Devin Dawson. As a songwriter, HARDY tallied recent No. 1 singles by Chris Lane (“I Don’t Know About You”) and Blake Shelton (“God’s Country”). The Mississippi native has been working on his upcoming full-length project with producer Joey Moi.

Ingrid Andress is experiencing an amazing rise to the top. Her self-penned single, “More Hearts Than Mine,” is one of only two solo-female-debut singles to go No. 1 on the Country Airplay chart in 2020. (The other is fellow nominee and Warner Music Nashville labelmate Gabby Barrett.) Andress co-wrote and co-produced her entire album Lady Like, which debuted as the then-highest streaming country female debut album of all time. The Colorado native follows the success of “More Hearts Than Mine” with new fast-climbing single, “The Stranger.”

Matt Stell soared on to the airwaves with his self-penned “Prayed for You,” which was the only Billboard chart-topper by a debut artist in 2019. He is continuing to attract fans with new music, including his currently climbing single, “Everywhere But On,” and another new track “If I Was A Bar.” Stell is an Arkansas native and self-taught vocalist and guitar-player. He made the move to Music City in 2014, where he landed a publishing and management deal with fellow MusicRow Awards nominee Ash Bowers.

Travis Denning celebrated his first No. 1 with “After A Few,” which he co-wrote, and has gone on to have 130 million streams globally. The song catapulted his artist career, and he is following that with new single “Where That Beer’s Been.” The Georgia native first made impressions with the release of his Top 40 debut single “David Ashley Parker From Powder Springs.” Denning kicked off 2020 as direct support for Dustin Lynch and has previously opened for Cole Swindell, Alan Jackson, and played his own headlining tour.

Longtime Nashville manager Erv Woolsey, CEO & Founder of the Erv Woolsey Company (EWC), has launched a label imprint under the EWC umbrella, Rollin’ The Dice Records, which will operate under a distribution deal with Copperline Music Group.

The first signing for the new imprint is the group Stone Senate, which will release their rendition of George Strait’s 1985 classic “The Fireman” on July 17. Stone Senate is led by vocalist/guitarist Clint Woolsey—son of Erv Woolsey—alongside dual lead guitarists James Edwards and Ted Hennington, with Paul Zettler on bass/vocals and David Zettler on drums/vocals. In 2014, the band released their first album, 1, produced by Vance Powell and Eddie Spear, with five singles released to active rock, classic rock and triple A radio, both terrestrial and streaming. In 2016, Stone Senate teamed up with guitarist Kenny Olson (Kid Rock, Seven Day Binge, Kenny Olson Cartel) to co-produce record number two, Star City, which featured three radio singles. They are set to release a new album later this year.
The Nashville-based, digital-focused record label imprint will focus primarily on select Erv Woolsey Company artists to execute all marketing and distribution of releases.

“We aren’t by any means trying to play the mainstream record label game,” says Woolsey. “But with modern technology and so many creative outlets at our disposal in this day and age, it allows us the opportunity to give our newer artists or select passion projects a stronger start and higher profile early in the development of their career.”

“Copperline Records is in business to connect and create multiple avenues for record labels to give their music a way to be heard by the masses. On behalf of the whole team at Copperline Music Group, we are eager to develop passion projects for the great Erv Woolsey,” adds CMG Head of A&R and Label Acquisitions, Dewayne Brown.

The Erv Woolsey Company is home to country star Lee Ann Womack plus flagship artist and music legend George Strait, among others.
