CMT Layoffs Follow Viacom Reorganization

CMT has laid off some executives as part of a larger reorganization at parent company Viacom, as Chris McCarthy (president of CMT, MTV, Logo and VH1) has consolidated several departments, MusicRow has confirmed. CMT’s marketing, music, scheduling, communication, and events teams will be fully integrated into McCarthy’s music group.

In October 2018, Viacom Media Networks announced a new structure, bringing CMT to join MTV, VH1, CMT, and Logo, while the other main brand groups include Comedy Central, Paramount Network and TV Land; BET Networks; and Nickelodeon.

Among those laid off from CMT as part of the department consolidations are chief marketing officer Anthony Barton, and Suzanne Norman, head of the Nashville office. Barton joined CMT’s Integrated Marketing team in 2004, and relocated to Nashville from New York in 2007. Norman joined CMT in 1999. Additionally, some CMT staffers will relocate to New York, while others continue in Nashville. After 12 years, Sr. Manager Social Media, Jen Hoogerhyde (Morrison) has also departed, and can be reached at [email protected].

“The heart and soul of CMT is our music programming, tentpoles and deep connection to Nashville — which will be at the center of CMT’s growth plan forward,” McCarthy said in an internal memo. “Through increased programming and events, we will further amplify Nashville and its thriving country music scene. More to come on this shortly.

The full memo from McCarthy is below:

Hi everyone,

We have made great progress over the last couple of years to fully harness the creative power of our collective group.

By integrating our departments across brands, removing silos and developing best-in-class creative teams, we are building a stronger group together.

Today, we are taking the next step — as we finalize the integration of CMT with a new, simplified structure. Moving forward, the CMT marketing, music, scheduling, communications and event production teams will be fully integrated within our group, under our existing unified leadership team. Several CMT leads will be taking on expanded roles working across all of our brands, particularly in partnership marketing and event production.

Unfortunately, however, this new structure does mean some hard changes. A number of our CMT marketing colleagues will be leaving including Anthony Barton, the head of CMT marketing, and Suzanne Norman, the head of our Nashville office.

Suzanne and Anthony are passionate champions for the CMT brand and we are very grateful for their many years of dedication. Without them, and many of our CMT colleagues, it would not be as strong as it is today. Please join me in thanking them and wishing everyone continued success.

The heart and soul of CMT is our music programming, tentpoles and deep connection to Nashville — which will be at the center of CMT’s growth plan forward. Through increased programming and events, we will further amplify Nashville and its thriving country music scene. More to come on this shortly.

Thank you for your continued support as we transform our group and the company for the future.

Best,
Chris

David Corlew and Bob Frank have formed a new Nashville-based publishing company, Corlew-Frank Music, with Scott Brown of The Scooter Brown Band as the group’s flagship songwriter. Publisher Kim Jones joins as the company’s Creative Director.

“Great songs are the basis of all we do. Recording and performing either makes us or breaks us,” says Corlew. “After selling my last catalog to BMG, I wanted to continue working in publishing, so I approached my 20-plus year partner in the label and distribution business, Bob Frank, and we decided to create Corlew-Frank Music. It made perfect sense to sign Scott Brown as our first writer, an artist we work together with through Bob Frank Distribution. Bringing publishing veteran Kim Jones into the mix made perfect sense, utilizing her experience in songs and writer development.”

Corlew’s previous publishing ventures include Kicking Bird Music, Bud Dog Music and the Corlew Music Group. Over the years, he’s worked with songwriters including including Chris Wallin, Keith Follesé, Tim Owens, Ben Stennis, Jason Sellers, and Jaron Boyer.

“David and I are looking forward to building Corlew-Frank Music into a preeminent independent publishing company,” says Frank. “He has a tremendous history of success and finding talented writers very early on in their development.”

On Tuesday night (March 12), Jake Owen revealed the track listing for his debut album, Greetings From…Jake, under the Big Loud Records umbrella at Flamingo Cocktail Club in Nashville. The 14-track album, set for release March 29, will feature his ACM-nominated single, “Down To The Honkytonk,” and seventh career No. 1 “I Was Jack (You Were Diane).” Each round of new singles was accompanied by a signature cocktail inspired by songs from the album.

After welcoming the audience, Clay Hunnicutt, President of Big Loud Records, said, “There are a lot of people in this room that helped create this music. To the writers, producers and all the contributors to this project, we want to say thanks. This is a really special project that we are very excited to be putting out.”

Owen expressed his excitement for the album adding, “This definitely isn’t my first rodeo, but what is exciting is there aren’t a lot of repeat writers. Even though [the album] is Greetings From…Jake, this is a party today for all of us to celebrate what I am very thankful for. This is a new chapter in my life with Big Loud and the album title is my journey. In any journey, it is time to check in and send a postcard. I think each song on the record is a little bit of where I am in life, where I am going and where I have been.”

Bobby Cudd Joins WME, Brings Old Crow Medicine Show, Ricky Skaggs To Roster

Bobby Cudd

Music agent Bobby Cudd has joined WME’s Nashville office. A well-known agent, especially in Americana music circles, Cudd brings to WME a roster that includes David Rawlings, The Doyle & Debbie Show, Gillian Welch, I’m With HER, Junior Brown, Kasey Chambers, Old Crow Medicine Show, Robert Earl Keen, Ricky Skaggs, Sarah Jarosz and more.

“Bobby Cudd is one of the most well-known and beloved agents in Nashville, and we are thrilled that he has decided to join our team,” said Jay Williams, partner and co-head of WME’s Nashville office.

Trisha Yearwood Celebrates 20th Opry Anniversary With Special Guests

Praise for multi-talented country music superstar Trisha Yearwood was through the roof last night (March 12) at The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville.

Yearwood was celebrating her 20th Anniversary as an Opry Member.

“We’re gonna do this again in 20 years. Count on it!” said Yearwood from the stage. “When they asked if I wanted to do an intimate celebration or a big event, I absolutely wanted a big celebration tonight.”

Surprise guests included Emmylou Harris, Garth Brooks and video tributes from Kelly Clarkson, Reba McEntire and Brenda Lee. Also appearing to duet with Yearwood was the man who invited her to become a member of the Opry in 1999, Ricky Skaggs.

“Ricky is one of those guys who doesn’t understand how cool he is,” Yearwood said of Skaggs. “Garth inducted him in the Country Music Hall of Fame, and when you hear his history, he’s so humble about it. He’s got to know because when he picks up a guitar or mandolin, it’s perfect.” Together the two sang a selection Yearwood chose from Skaggs’ discography, “Two Highways.”

Yearwood talked about those early inspirations that led her to the Opry stage.

“At 15 I came to the Opry with my family and watched people up here do what I wanted to do,” said Yearwood backstage before the celebration. “It’s never normal and I hope it never is. My dressing room tonight is the Women Of Country Music and my picture is on the wall in that room. It’s hard to wrap your head around it sometimes.

“We had an album I think my parents bought at a filling station and it had like 25 artists on it with two women,” explained Yearwood. “One was Patsy [Cline], the other was Kitty Wells. Those two girls were probably the first to girls that I remember hearing. Patsy was ‘I Fall To Pieces,’ with that big powerful voice with the cry and emotion in it. That’s what started it for me.”

During the Opry show, Yearwood paid tribute to the late Cline through her song and wardrobe selections.

“Twenty years ago, Patsy Cline’s daughter Julie and [Cline’s husband] Charlie Dick came out and gave me a plaque with a necklace that had belonged to Patsy. It’s framed, but I’m going to break it out of the glass tonight and wear it.” Yearwood sang “Sweet Dreams,” a song she’d sung on her induction night, in tribute.

To the crowd’s delight, Brooks took to the stage with a cue from Yearwood to perform another selection by Yearwood, “Whiskey To Wine.” While on stage, Brooks noted that while Yearwood credits Harris as one of the artists who inspired her to move to Nashville and pursue a music career, he has met hundreds of young women who now say the same of Yearwood.

Rounding out her evening, Yearwood reflected on having been inducted into the Opry by Porter Wagoner and sharing that Wagoner always called on her to “sing the one that brung ya.” With the crystal clarity of her distinguished voice, Yearwood performed her No. 1 debut single “She’s In Love With The Boy.”

Praise from a video tribute with a quote from Wagoner still holds: “Of all the girl singers in any of the fields of music, you’re the best I’ve heard.”

‘Anything For A Hit’ Author, Former A&R Exec Dorothy Carvello To Speak At Change The Conversation Event

Dorothy Carvello, former music executive. Photo: Dorothy Carvello

A&R pioneer Dorothy Carvello will discuss her new book, Anything For a Hit: An A&R Woman’s Story of Surviving the Music Industry, during an event hosted by music industry organization Change the Conversation on March 20 at 6 p.m. at Analog At Hutton Hotel in Nashville.

Change The Conversation was launched in 2014 by Nashville music industry executives Tracy Gershon, Leslie Fram and Beverly Keel and is committed to fighting gender inequality within the country music industry.

“I’m excited to engage Nashville as it is now the creative hub for music,” says Carvello. “We are at a defining moment right now with the treatment of female artists at country radio. Who will stand for the women now, and be on the right side of history?”

Carvello began working in the music industry in 1987, as a secretary to Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun; Carvello rose through the ranks to become the label’s first female A&R exec. She also worked with some of the most well-known music executives, including Doug Morris, Irving Azoff, Joe Galante and Don Ienner, at Atlantic, Giant, RCA, Columbia and Relativity.

According to the New York Times, Carvello’s book “goes a long way toward explaining the culture of misogyny that, at best, looked the other way as women were mistreated and, at worst, cultivated abuse.”

“I am hearing stories of sexual harassment and bullying from women and men in the past and present music industry,” Carvello says. “We have abusers currently working in our business. Time’s Up. Every woman has a story of sexual harassment. I want the women entering this business to see my story as a cautionary tale, and embrace the list of what I learned at the end of my book. It’s a road map for proper work place behavior.”

She will also sign copies of her book at the event, which is free and open to the public. RSVPs for the event can be sent to [email protected].
