Mumford & Sons bassist Ted Dwane has been discharged from the hospital after successful brain surgery and is on the road to recovery, according to a statement on the Mumford & Sons Facebook page. “The surgery went well, and the excellent medical team helping him are very pleased with his progress. He has been nothing short of heroic in how he has handled the whole ordeal, and now it has been medically proved that he does indeed have a brain,” the band said in a message to fans.

The Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival was informed yesterday (June 13) that Mumford & Sons had to cancel their Saturday headlining appearance due to Dwane’s medical condition. In Mumford & Sons’ place, festival organizers have announced Jack Johnson will now headline Bonnaroo on Saturday night.

I have been a research geek forever. Going back to my early years in radio with Bill Moyes research and up through Stratford and Edison media, I have always been fascinated to see what the consumers like about radio, music, personalities and trends. This is why I am so impressed with what CMA Senior Director of Market Research Karen Stump does with her staff for the country music/radio community.
I’m not sure how many of my radio colleagues have seen the most recent study, released last month. The radio and record industries are tied to the consumer’s discretionary time and money. Radio can use this material to make some money with clients and the record industry can intersect the listener’s lifestyle for their entertainment dollars.
This research identified how families spend their money on entertainment. The study looked at country music fans and helps us understand how our users spend their flexible time. Most of these studies are culled from the 13,000 country music consumers who have opted into the CMA program. This helps us identify active partisans. Otherwise known as “our target.”
One finding is the amount of money, energy and time families spend on entertainment. Eighty-six percent of country music households with children participated in paid family activities in the last 12 months. Top single day events include going to the movies (maybe a GREAT venue to run a radio station commercial), attending concerts and music festivals, and visiting family entertainment centers like bowling, miniature golf, skating rinks and go-carts. Zoos, museums, water parks and camping are all high on the list of family activities.
If families pack the car for multi-day trips, amusement parks like Disney and Six Flags were the number one choices. If you think the economy is putting pressure on money spent for family entertainment, think again. Forty percent of families participate in weekly events and 72 percent of country music families, that make more than $75,000 per year, spend $100 or more per month on single day family activities.
I wonder what it would take for a family of four to attend a concert? With tickets, parking and refreshments would this one day event be closer to $400? Is there an opportunity to put together some newer act tours where the performers are not doing 100 free shows a year but families can enjoy the time together and at the same time see great live music? And the performers can generate a little income and merch money.
In fact, attending a live concert/music festival scored an A+ for family enjoyment. The highest score recorded. The zoo and camping were close behind. I do like that 73 percent of the consumers say “spending quality time as a family” is the primary goal of participating family activities. This tells me the money is not a deal breaker. Walt Disney World and one of the Six Flags parks lead the pack for top parks visited by country music households in past 12 months. As an aside, I live three miles from Six Flags Magic Mountain and I have NEVER been there.
For radio station sales staffs, this report gives you a heads up to the listener’s plans in the immediate future. Disney World, Universal Studios, Sea World and Six Flags lead the desired list and maybe there is an opportunity for sales and or promotions. For artists, knowing these are the places your fans are going to go over the summer, maybe tying in or doing shows at the parks would be an opportunity. Check out the study at cmaworld.com, and drop Karen a note telling her how important this information is to the format’s health.
Happy Travels…in and out of town.

Four-time Grammy Winner Responds: 'Pandora Is Stiffing Artists'

josh kear 2013 photo

Josh Kear

Four-time Grammy-winner and six-time No. 1 songwriter Josh Kear responded yesterday (June 13) to online streaming service Pandora’s recent op-ed piece by Christopher Harrison against ASCAP’s efforts to protect fair compensation for its members in Washington DC’s The Hill. In the post titled Pandora Is Stiffing Artists, Kear notes, “a mere four percent of Pandora’s total revenue is spent on licensing public performance rights.”
The full text of Kear’s response can be found below and on The Hill’s website here:
As a songwriter and ASCAP member, I found the recent opinion piece by Pandora’s assistant general counsel (“Why Pandora bought an FM radio station,” 6/11/13) to be long on rhetoric but short on facts.
Unlike Pandora, ASCAP is a nonprofit membership organization that collects and distributes royalties to the hundreds of thousands of songwriters, composers and music publishers it represents. Members like me depend on ASCAP to negotiate fair deals on our behalf, so we can earn a living as more listeners discover and enjoy our music across a wide variety of platforms, including Internet radio.
Savvy readers will note a mere four percent of Pandora’s total revenue is spent on licensing public performance rights from songwriters and composers. That means we make a fraction of a cent every time one of our songs streams on Pandora’s service — while the company’s founder has cashed out more than $15 million in stock since the company went public. And yet we’re supposed to be excited that Pandora has now bought an FM radio station, because it will allow the company to pay the songwriters and composers who fuel their entire business even less than a fraction of a penny? It’s hard to follow that logic. Harder still to see how the FCC, which has to approve the sale, would find such a clearly self-serving purchase to be in the public interest.
I like streaming music online as much as the next guy. And I certainly appreciate the opportunities it creates for me as an artist to reach new listeners. But Pandora is misleading readers by claiming to be on the side of artists, when its recent actions firmly prove otherwise. Shame on us if we let them continue the charade.
Kear has written hit songs for Lady Antebellum (“Need You Now”), Carrie Underwood (“Before He Cheats,” “Blown Away”), Luke Bryan (“Drunk on You”), Darius Rucker (“True Believers”) and others. His current singles include Tim McGraw and Taylor Swift‘s “Highway Don’t Care,” Lady Antebellum‘s “Goodbye Town” and Tyler Farr‘s “Redneck Crazy.”

Kenny Chesney's No Shoes Nation Tour Sells More Than 1 Million Tickets

kenny chesney 2013 photoIt is only mid-June, and Kenny Chesney‘s 2013 No Shoes Nation Tour has already sold over 1,089,000 tickets. The No Shoes Nation Tour began in March and has played to 19 stadiums thus far.
“I’m glad people hear their lives in this music,” Chesney says of the successful tour. “I am always humbled when people tell me they plan their summer around coming to the show, because I remember being that kind of fan. I try to be the artist I would’ve wanted my favorite singers to be – and make sure that we give people the best show we can every time we get up there. To me, that’s the most important thing… and the fans can tell. Maybe that’s why we’ve hit that million ticket mark so early this year.”

BMI Files Suit Against Pandora

BMI logoBroadcast Music Inc (BMI) filed an action in New York City today (June 13) asking the Federal Rate Court to set royalty fees for internet radio service Pandora on behalf of the organization’s 600,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers, the performing rights organization (PRO) said in a statement. The action asks the court to set reasonable, market driven fees for Pandora after negotiations did not result in an agreement.
This comes after Pandora recently signed an agreement to purchase Rapid City, S.D. radio station KXMZ-FM, a small-market Hot AC format broadcast radio station. The strategic purchase is reportedly a way for the company to qualify for Radio Music Licensing Committee (RMLC) agreements regarding royalties and public performances of musical works from the PROs.

This year’s record-breaking event raised nearly a quarter of a million dollars with the help of approximately 4000 fans, friends and locals who came out to support the cause.

Thanks to presenting sponsor, 1-800 Flowers Franchising, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the townspeople and organizations affected by the tragedy in nearby West, Texas.

The event kicked off with an all-star concert on June 2 featuring Bowen and friends including Roger Creager, Pat Green, Cody Johnson, Josh Abbott Band, Neal McCoy, Reckless Kelly’s Willy Braun, Billy Joe Shaver, The Departed’s Cody Canada & Seth James, Aaron Watson, Josh Weathers and Charlie Worsham.

Over the past four years, Bowen has raised close to half a million dollars for various local organizations in need.
