Grand Ole Opry To Honor Dolly Parton With Week-Long Celebration

On Jan. 4, 1969, Dolly Parton was inducted as a member of the Grand Ole Opry. Nearly 50 years later, Parton has earned practically every music honor imaginable.

In conjunction with the release of her new album Dumplin’ Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Dolly Records/RCA Nashville), Parton is set to return to the Grand Ole Opry stage. The global superstar will celebrate the 50th anniversary of her Opry membership, performing on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2019, and capping a week-long celebration of Parton’s impact on music and the Opry, dubbed Dolly Week 2019.

“It was always my dream to be on the Opry,” recalls Parton. “I actually got to sing on the Grand Ole Opry when I was about 10 years old. I officially became a member back in 1969 and I cannot believe next year I will celebrate 50 proud years of being a member of the Grand Ole Opry! They call it the ‘Mother Church’ because the old Ryman was a church, but it’s sacred to me, wherever it goes – the church of my heart. For me, the Opry is like the song ‘New York, New York’ – if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere. I am excited to be coming back home to celebrate 50 years of membership!”

The Grand Ole Opry has created several days of music programming for Dolly Week 2019 that acknowledges her broad influence.

Cobb most recently served as a music consultant and producer of the A Star Is Born soundtrack, which topped the charts for three consecutive weeks and remains in the top five after seven weeks in release.

The news comes on the heels of Cobb’s win at the 2018 CMA Awards for Single of the Year (“Broken Halos”) with Chris Stapleton. Nashville-based Cobb previously co-produced the triple-platinum album Traveller for Stapleton and the 2017 follow-ups From A Room: Volume 1 and From A Room: Volume 2. Tennessee Entertainment Commission, Recording Academy Launch Scoring Incentives Program

The Tennessee Entertainment Commission (TEC), with support from the Nashville and Memphis Chapters of the Recording Academy, has launched a new Scoring Incentives Program for companies producing original music scores for films, television, video games, and other digital media projects in Tennessee.

TEC’s scoring incentives offer up to a 25 percent rebate on qualified expenditures for music scoring projects that spend at least $50,000 in the Nashville area or at least $25,000 in other parts of Tennessee. The rebate covers costs for musicians, producers, engineers, recording studios, instruments, and other qualified expenses.

More than 6,725 Tennesseans work in the recording industry across nearly 1,100 businesses. Tennessee has the highest concentration of musicians, music directors, and publishers in the United States. It also has the second-highest concentration of sound engineers.

“We are excited to launch Tennessee’s first music-focused incentives program,” said Tennessee Entertainment Commission Executive Director Bob Raines. “Scoring has been a growth sector of Tennessee’s music industry in recent years. It is our goal to make Tennessee the No. 1 destination for these types of media projects and to create high-quality job opportunities for Tennessee musicians and engineers, while expanding our existing production infrastructure.”

“As the home to so many talented working music creators, this new incentive further emphasizes Tennessee’s dedication to music and the composers who create some of our favorite soundtracks,” said Daryl P. Friedman, the Recording Academy’s Chief Industry, Government & Member Relations Officer. “More than a decade in the making, we thank Gov. Bill Haslam, the Tennessee Entertainment Commission, and the leaders of the Academy’s Nashville and Memphis Chapters for creating more opportunities for music creators across all sectors of the recording industry.”

“It only makes sense for us to leverage Tennessee’s unparalleled concentration of music talent and production services to attract additional music scoring projects,” Raines added. “As Tennessee attracts more scoring projects through TEC’s new program, it will allow our creative class and content creators to showcase their superb quality to audiences across the globe.”

“I have always wished that the arts were better supported in America, and this incentive gives me hope that this is happening,” said John McBride, owner of Blackbird Studio in Nashville. “There is a substantial amount of work in the field of orchestral recording for not just music projects but also films, television, and gaming. Nashville is the perfect place for this recording to be produced. We have state-of-the-art studios, producers, engineers, composers, arrangers, and players. I believe this will increase the incentive to use Nashville as a focal point in future orchestral productions, which is great for both the players and production people involved, as well as the entire state of Tennessee. This city has world-class production capability and we need to show the world.”

Taylor Swift Signs With Universal Music Group

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift signed a global recording agreement with Universal Music Group (UMG). Under the multi-year agreement, UMG will serve as the exclusive worldwide recorded music partner for Swift and UMG’s Republic Records will serve as her label partner in the U.S. Swift was previously signed with Big Machine Records.

In a social media post, Swift noted that she will own all of her recorded masters going forward. “It’s also incredibly exciting to know that I’ll own all of my master recordings that I make from now on. It’s really important for me to see eye to eye with a label regarding the future of our industry,” she said.

Swift noted that as part of the new UMG agreement, any sale of their Spotify shares will result in a distribution of monies to their artists, non-recoupable.

She also shared love and gratitude for Big Machine Records’ Scott Borchetta “for believing in me as a 14-year-old and guiding me through over a decade of work that I will always be so proud of. I’m extremely grateful to get to do what I love, especially with the people that I’ve been fortunate enough to work with.”

The new UMG multi-album agreement, effective immediately, deepens the relationship between Swift and UMG and builds upon the enormous success she achieved with Big Machine Records—the label whose long-term strategic alliance with Republic Records first brought Swift into the UMG family. A 10-time Grammy winner distinguished as the youngest-ever recipient of the Grammy for Album of the Year—and the first female solo artist to win the award twice—is the only artist in history with four albums with sales of more than one million copies in their first week of release (2010’s Speak Now, 2012’s RED, 2014’s 1989 and 2017’s reputation), respectively.

In making the announcement, Sir Lucian Grainge, Chairman and CEO of Universal Music Group, said, “Few artists in history approach Taylor Swift’s combination of massive global hits and creative brilliance. She is so multi-talented, she can achieve anything. I have such enormous respect for Taylor, in particular for her use of her hard-earned influence to promote positive change. Because of her commitment to her fellow artists, not only did she want to partner with a company that understood her creative vision and had the resources and expertise to execute globally on her behalf, she also sought a partner whose approach to artists was aligned with hers. With these shared beliefs, there is so much we can accomplish together, and all of us at UMG are enormously proud to be embarking on the next chapter of her career alongside her.”

Monte Lipman, founder and CEO, of Republic Records said, “Taylor has not only captured the imagination of an entire generation, but has also redefined the paradigm of the modern music industry. Her commitment to songwriting and performing has earned her the respect of her peers and millions of adoring fans around the world. I can only imagine what Taylor is capable of achieving in the years to come, both culturally and creatively. I’m beyond thrilled to create an alliance with Republic Records and the incomparable Taylor Swift.”

Riser House Entertainment, a full-service record label, artist management and music publishing company, has signed Jordan Rager to a publishing and artist deal. Riser House’s roster of talent also includes artists Mitchell Tenpenny and Dillon Carmichael, as well as writers Michael Whitworth, Dallas Wilson, Claire Douglas, and Rob Crosby.

A Georgia native, 24-year-old Rager was discovered as a teenager by country artist Justin Moore after uploading videos of himself singing classic cover songs to YouTube. Soon after, he was opening an arena tour for Moore. Rager went on to sign with Broken Bow Records and record a song with Jason Aldean that climbed to the Top 40 of the Country Airplay chart. Rager recently released the singles “One Of The Good Ones” and “Georgia Boy.” In December, Rager will play a pair of end-of-year shows at Eddie’s Attic in Georgia.

“I have been following Jordan Rager‘s career for almost four years now and have enjoyed watching him develop not only as an artist, but as an exceptional young man. He is certainly ‘One of the Good Ones!’” said Jennifer Johnson, President, Riser House Entertainment. “We are thrilled to welcome such a highly-talented songwriter and performer to our roster and can’t wait to see what’s in store for him.”

“Riser House is young, hungry, and has something to prove. Just like me. I think that’s why I felt so at home with them. They allow me to create the music I’ve always dreamed of. We make a great team and I’m excited to see what the future holds for both of us,” said Rager.

Rager is currently preparing to go into the studio to record his 2019 release.
