Signups Officially Open For Tennessee Songwriters Week 2025

Signups are officially open for songwriters of all genres to participate in the seventh annual statewide Tennessee Songwriters Week.

Songwriters of all genres can sign up to perform in qualifying rounds all over Tennessee and compete for a chance to play their originals at venues across the state including The Bluebird Cafe in Nashville. Tennessee Songwriters Week begins in late January with qualifying rounds taking place at nearly 50 participating music venues throughout the state including cafes, listening rooms, breweries, distilleries, museums and historic theaters.

From there, select songwriters will advance to one of seven Tennessee Songwriters Week showcases at Lafayette’s Music Room in Memphis (Feb. 25), The Bijou in Knoxville (Feb. 25), Ole Red in Gatlinburg (Feb. 26), Paramount Bristol in Bristol (Feb. 26), Bessie Smith Cultural Center in Chattanooga (Feb. 27), The Temple Theatre in Portland (Feb. 28) and Franklin Theatre in Franklin (March 1).

The showcase events highlight cities and regions that have played a major role in the musical development of Tennessee across a diverse range of genres. One songwriter from each showcase will be chosen to perform at Nashville’s iconic Bluebird Cafe during a private event in March. Each of the finalists will also receive additional prizes, including a one-year membership to Nashville Songwriters Association International and a commemorative Taylor guitar.

Helmed by the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development, Tennessee Songwriters Week supports music venues, provides songwriters with live performance opportunities, drives visitation and inspires travelers to experience the state’s musical stories, history, attractions and venues. Since its inception in 2019, more than 4,000 songwriters have shared their original songs on Tennessee stages during the annual celebration each February.

Cam Newby Inks With Sea Gayle Music & Magnolia Sky Music Group

Pictured: (L–R, top row): Emily Witters, Eryca Schebler and Kim Wiggins; (L–R, second row): JD Groover, Brandon Gregg and Chris Dubois. (L–R, third row): Tammi Kidd Hutton and Lynn Hutton; (front): Cam Newby

Cam Newby has signed a joint publishing deal with Sea Gayle Music and Magnolia Sky Music Group.

Born and raised in Oklahoma City, Newby always knew his future would be in Nashville. As a child, he would sit in the back of his brother-in-law’s Bronco, memorizing every song on whatever burned CD was playing. He became captivated by Mark Chesnutt’s storytelling, Tracy Lawrence’s voice and how James Taylor could evoke emotion with an acoustic guitar. As Newby grew older, he began to explore everything from red dirt-country to ’80s pop, and knew he wanted to master music for the rest of his life.

Newby made the move to Nashville when he was 18, and hasn’t looked back. After graduating from Belmont University, he immediately began writing songs. Over the years, Newby has had the chance to learn from his heroes, with some becoming his closest collaborators.

“If I told 15-year-old me, hacking away on a cheap Washburn guitar in his bedroom, where God was going to take him one day—I’m not sure he would ever believe me,” he shares. “Chris DuBois, Lynn Hutton and Tammi Kidd [Hutton] have changed my life in ways that I’m not sure words can even describe. The opportunities I have in this building stretch far beyond songwriting, and I will forever be grateful to Sea Gayle and Magnolia Sky for believing in me. I came to town looking for a career and wound up finding a family. Every second of the wait was worth it.”

“We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Cam Newby to the Sea Gayle family,” says DuBois, Sea Gayle Music Founder & CEO. “Cam is an exceptionally talented singer-songwriter with a unique gift for storytelling that resonates with everyone. We’re incredibly grateful to Lynn and Tammi Hutton for partnering with us on Cam’s journey, and we’re thrilled to be a part of his musical path moving forward.”

“Cam is an exceptional songwriter with an incredible work ethic,” adds Lynn Hutton, Magnolia Sky Music Group Co-Founder. “I’m very proud to be working with him, and I can’t wait for the town to finally see what I already know.”

DISClaimer Single Reviews: Riley Green Is ‘Intensely Moving’

Riley Green. Photo: Jeremy Cowart

We’re ending 2024 on a country-music high note.

Eight of them, actually, as we celebrate the hardcore country sounds of Zach Top, Nu-Blu, Kashus Culpepper, Riley Green, The War & Treaty, The Boykinz, Redferrin and Alex Miller. The pop-country outings in this week’s column decidedly take a backseat to these fine folks.

Heart-touching ballads are the order of the day with the moving tracks by Green, Nu-Blu and Hueston. In fact, Riley’s Green’s powerful “Jesus Saves” is the Disc of the Day.

The DISCovery Award goes to the sister act The Boykinz. I was charmed. You will be, too.

ALEX MILLER / “She Makes Dirt Look Good”
Writers: Dusty Drake/Kerry Kurt Phillips/Phil O’Donnell; Producer: Jerry Salley; Label: Billy Jam Records
– Country as grits, plus lyrics that put a smile on your face. Hillbilly lovable.

THE WAR AND TREATY / “Carried Away”
Writers: Michael Trotter Jr./Tanya Trotter; Producers: Michael Trotter Jr., Tanya Trotter; Label: UMG Nashville
– Honky-tonk nirvana. This powerhouse vocal duo takes on a country love ballad, demonstrating a mastery of the genre that hasn’t been heard since the classic days of Ray Charles. Joyously sexy.

DYLAN SCOTT / “Country Till I Die”
Writers: Benjamin Joel Johnson/Charlie Handsome/John Byron/Taylor Phillips; Producer: Joe Fox; Label: Curb Records
– The lyric proclaims his country bona fides. The track is pounding hard rock. Whatever…

HUESTON / “Pour Me Another”
Writer: Brandon Sammons; Producer: BSAMZ; Label: Silver Wings Records
– Cory Hueston comes to us from the world of alt-rock. On this stark, stripped down ballad, he dips deeply into authentic country, complete with echoey twang guitar and a vocal performance of grit and anguish. Ear catching, to say the least. Send more.

RILEY GREEN / “Jesus Saves”
Writer: Riley Green; Producers: Dann Huff, Jimmy Harnen, Scott Borchetta; Label: Nashville Harbor
– Intensely moving. Green tells the tale of a homeless, jobless veteran on the street and the circumstances that brought him to a place of destitution. A simple guitar accompaniment and some soft strings frame the poetry. Brilliantly done.

KASHUS CULPEPPER / “Pour Me Out”
Writers: Ben Burgess/Diego Urias/Kashus Culpepper; Producer: Brian Elmquist; Label: Big Loud/Mercury Records
– In this barroom ballad, Kashus compares himself to a drink that she holds in her hand. He begs her to either drink him or pour him out. A barrelhouse piano, a sighing organ and a sympathetic steel guitar echo every soulfully sung note. A solid winner.

NEIL PERRY / “Easy Love”
Writer: Neil Perry; Producers: Nathan Chapman, Scott Thomas Robinson; Label: NP
– First known as one-third of The Band Perry, this guy’s second solo single that has an enchanting production of ghostly, echoey guitars and electronic washes. This underscores a gentle, pop vocal that goes down smooth and easy. Exquisitely listenable.

THE BOYKINZ / “Fell In Love With A Cowboy”
Writers: Alona Lebray Boykin/Anale Lasha Boykin/Kylan Lantress Boykin/Nathan Chapman/Nytere Lona Boykin; Producer: Nathan Chapman; Label: QCLG
– The sister quartet turned heads opening for Shania Twain. This wildly catchy bopper is a sensational disc debut. An ultra-cute video, also their first, features them dancing in sync, flirting with cowpokes and trading lead vocals with verve. Spectacularly promising and essential viewing.

NU BLU, SHARON WHITE & RICKY SKAGGS / “The Will”
Writers: Dennis Morgan/Rockie Lynne; Producer: Nu Blue; Label: Turnberry Records
– The Nu-Blu band is celebrating its 20th anniversary in bluegrass this year. Lead singer Carolyn Routh shares a microphone for a flawless trio harmony performance with these two Grand Ole Opry stars on a ballad that describes a father’s last wishes. By the time they get to, “see you on the other side,” you’ll have a lump in your throat. The group’s Where You’ve Been album that contains this performance also features guests Jim Peterik (Survivor, The Ides of March) and Jody McBrayer (Avalon).

REDFERRIN / “Ruin My Night”
Writers: Blake Redferrin/Jackson Foote/Jake Saghi; Producers: Jake Saghi, Redferrin; Label: Warner Music Nashville
– This is a rolling bopper with a dandy backbeat and an earnest, country-boy delivery. It’s come-on to a gal who’s as bad for him as whiskey is. It rides like a road song, for sure.

JERRY DOUGLAS / “The Fifth Season”
Writers: Christian Sedelmyer/Jay Kimbro/Jerry Douglas/Mike Seal; Producer: Jerry Douglas; Label: Many Hats Distribution
– The dobro master is gearing up for a massive tour with Alison Krauss & Union Station next year. In the meantime, his new solo album The Set is claiming attention and praise. Its single is a dazzling, multi-textured instrumental that showcases his superb band in all its fleet-fingered glory. Close your eyes and take a trip.

ZACH TOP / “Cold Beer & Country Music”
Writers: Carson Chamberlain/Zach Top; Producer: Carson Chamberlain; Label: Leo33
– What a year this fellow has had—a CMA award nomination, a New Faces CRS slot and universal applause for his back-to-country sound. The title tune of his album says it all. He bends notes in honky-tonk splendor, picks hot licks and describes a solo night in a beer barroom. Slap him on the back and yell, “Yee-haw!” to heaven. Thank God for this man’s music.

NSAI & Bob Kingsley Continue Partnership To Spotlight Developing Songwriters

NSAI is continuing its partnership with The Bob Kingsley Estate to help magnify the Top 40 brand Kingsley brought to prominence in country music and spotlight developing songwriters.

Kingsley was involved globally in syndication from 1974 until his passing in 2019, and had a simple directive for his 40-year plus countdown program: “pay it off with a song.” Since 2022, NSAI has produced Bob Kingsley’s NSAI Top 40, featuring songs from unsigned songwriters each quarter, providing selected songs a much-needed spotlight on social media and within the Nashville songwriting community.

“Each quarter NSAI posts a playlist of the best 40 songs from our non-professional members, songs that come through our programs and services from songwriters around the world,” says says NSAI Executive Director Bart Herbison. “We are honored to continue our partnership with Nan Kingsley and The Bob Kingsley Estate to honor Bob’s legacy, while also recognizing and inspiring a new generation of professional songwriters.”

Beginning in 2025, Bob Kingsley’s NSAI Top 40 songs will be highlighted during spotlight features within broadcasts of Bob Kingsley’s Countdown Classics on WSM-AM/Nashville. The latest list of selected songs can be found here.

Dualtone Music Group President, Paul Roper, Passes After Cancer Battle

Paul Roper

Paul Roper, President of Dualtone Music Group, passed away on Tuesday (Dec. 17) after a battle with cancer.

Roper joined Dualtone Music Group in 2002 as an intern and swiftly rose through the ranks, becoming a key leader at the label and ultimately serving as President and Partner. He played an integral role in the release of over 200 albums, garnering Americana Music Association Awards as well as four Grammy wins and multiple nominations.

Roper was instrumental in championing critically-acclaimed albums by The Lumineers, Gregory Alan Isakov, Mt. Joy, Shakey Graves, Shovels & Rope, Flipturn, Brett Dennen, Langhorne Slim, Wilder Woods, Guy Clark, Chuck Berry, Mouse Rat, June Carter Cash and more.

He was known as visionary leader in the music space he called “Amerikinda,” and celebrated great songwriting across genres. Roper was also known as a tireless advocate for artists.

“When we started touring in our 15-passenger van, we used to park at the venue and bide our time until it was time to load in. We didn’t have money for hotels, and we’d usually be splitting Subway sandwiches or Clif Bars between us,” shares Jeremiah Fraites of The Lumineers. “I’ll never forget when Paul Roper showed up to the parking lot behind the venue in Nashville and met us with beer and pizza. It was a small gesture on his side, but a massive one to us.”

Under his leadership, Dualtone earned a reputation as a trusted partner for artists and a leader in independent music. In the wake of the East Nashville tornado in 2020, Roper shared, “The spirit of this company has always been bigger than any person or place. We had a lot of great memories in that building, but the heart of Dualtone is the music, the artists, the staff, the community. No storm could ever take that away.”

He is survived by his wife and their four children. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Corner to Corner in his memory.

A memorial service for Roper will take place at Belmont University’s Fisher Center on Monday (Dec. 23) at 10:30 a.m.

Eddie Kloesel Named Partner At WHY&HOW [Exclusive]

Eddie Kloesel

Eddie Kloesel has been named as Partner at full-service artist management and music company WHY&HOW by Founder & CEO Bruce Kalmick.

Kloesel joined WHY&HOW when it launched in 2020 as Vice President of Touring & Sponsorships, and has since risen to Executive Vice President.

“Eddie and I have been in business together for a long time. He’s a trusted strategic thinker who approaches our clients’ business like an entrepreneur. He’s always thinking outside the box, and has brought forward opportunities that are not only lucrative for our clients but are also unique within the industry,” says Kalmick. “When I launched WHY&HOW, bringing Eddie on board was an obvious decision, and his promotion to Partner has been a long time coming.”

“For nearly 15 years, I’ve had the privilege of working with and learning from Bruce, whose leadership is defined by empowering the team around him. Being named Partner is both a profound honor and a deeply meaningful milestone. Together, I look forward to continuing to elevate WHY&HOW and the incredible clients we serve. For a kid from Vidor, Texas with a lifelong dream of making it in the music industry, this is a moment I’ll cherish and build upon with immense gratitude,” shares Kloesel.

He has played a key role in defining and executing the company’s long-term strategic goals, seeking to identify and capitalize on opportunities that contribute to the company’s growth and profitability. He has also overseen brand partnerships and touring strategy for WHY&HOW clients, including Whiskey Myers and Chase Rice. Kloesel helped to secure a partnership between Rice and Coors Banquet, a first-of-its-kind deal for the legacy Molson Coors brand, which has since been renewed, and assisted in establishing Whiskey Myers’ relationship with American sprint car racing series High Limits Racing.

He has overseen the release of 11 independent albums across the rock and country genres, including Rice’s I Hate Cowboys & All Dogs Go To Hell and Go Down Singin’, Southall’s For the Birds and self-titled 2023 album, as well as five Whiskey Myers collections, including the band’s 2019 self-titled release. His clients’ projects have collectively earned six Gold, 11 Platinum, three double-Platinum and four triple-Platinum RIAA certifications.

On the touring front, Kloesel managed Whiskey Myers’ 2022-2023 tour, which saw the band become one of the few independent acts to headline arenas and sell out a debut show at Red Rocks in under 36 hours. He also helped to book Rice as an opener for Garth Brooks at Ford Field in 2020, after working to book Whiskey Myers as an opener for The Rolling Stones at Soldier Field in 2018.

“I’ve known Eddie since we were both very new in this industry. We’ve seen each other both change and grow to the point we are hardly recognizable from what we were 10 years ago,” says Rice. “He has been a massive part of me getting out of the machine that I was in, to creating music that is true to who I am to my core. There will be songs released at some point that are five to 10 years old simply because he continues to send me old stuff occasionally, reminding me how great some of my earlier writing was. He’s old school in a new world, and I believe this world needs more men like him. He’s not just my manager, he’s family, and I’m proud to call him a friend. He’s earned this.”
