Madison Watkins has inked a record deal with Provident Entertainment/Sony Music.

“We are honored, and so excited to have Madison as part of our Provident family,” says Holly Zabka, President of Provident Entertainment. “The new music she has created is fresh and unique, and Madison’s work ethic is second to none. We can’t wait to see how her artistry and these songs impact people around the globe.”

Watkins has captivated audiences with her vocals, songwriting and infectious energy, and the Arkansas native has continued to wow fans with her original music. Her song “Curls” went viral, amassing over 1.5 billion plays on TikTok, and she followed it up with a series of singles like “Someday,” “Lose To Love,” and “Kiss U,” creating a collection of songs that celebrate confidence, faith and love. Watkins has shared the stage with artists like Jason Derulo and Tori Kelly, and her music has been featured in television shows and major brand campaigns, including those for Aussie Hair, Steve Madden, LG and PUMA, among others.

Ahead of her EP release set for the summer of 2025, Watkins dropped her first single in two years, “Spin,” last Friday (Jan. 24). While the track offers just a glimpse of what’s to come from her upcoming project, she opens up right away. The song’s lyrics invite listeners to find beauty in slowing down and reconnecting with the world around them.

“Writing and recording the song ‘Spin’ has helped me walk through anxiety, let go of my fears, and learn to live like a kid again,” shares Watkins. “There is a lot going on in the world right now, and my hope is that this song will provide the perfect way to remind others to get out of their heads and reconnect with where they are in the here and now.”

Universal Music Group & Spotify Strike New Multi-Year Agreement

Universal Music Group and Spotify have announced new, multi-year agreements for Recorded Music and Music Publishing that seeks to advance the next era of streaming innovation.

Under the new agreement, artists, songwriters and consumers will benefit from new and evolving offers, new paid subscription tiers, bundling of music and non-music content, and a richer audio and visual content catalog. It establishes a direct license between Spotify and Universal Music Publishing Group across Spotify’s current product portfolio in the U.S. and several other countries.

Sir Lucian Grainge, Chairman & CEO, Universal Music Group says, “When we first presented our vision for the next stage in the evolution of music subscription several months ago—Streaming 2.0—this is precisely the kind of partnership development we envisioned. This agreement furthers and broadens the collaboration with Spotify for both our labels and music publisher, advancing artist-centric principles to drive greater monetization for artists and songwriters, as well as enhancing product offerings for consumers.”

Daniel Ek, Spotify’s Founder and CEO, shares, “For nearly two decades, Spotify has made good on its commitment to return the music industry to growth, ensuring that we deliver record payouts to the benefit of artists and songwriters each new year. This partnership ensures we can continue to deliver on this promise by embracing the certainty that constant innovation is key to making paid music subscriptions even more attractive to a broader audience of fans around the world.”

This follows Spotify’s May announcement about changes to its payment model for songwriters and publishers, as the platform transitions to a bundled subscription service that now includes audiobooks. The move has sparked scrutiny from songwriters, rights-holders, and advocacy groups.

Of the UMG and Spotify partnership, NMPA President & CEO David Israelite, an advocate for songwriter rights and a vocal critic of Spotify, says, “The announcement of a deal between Spotify and UMPG bodes well for the industry and is a clear sign that Spotify felt the backlash to its bundling scheme.

“While we do not have details of the agreement beyond what was in the press release, it appears that it increases royalty rates which is good news for the entire industry. A rising tide lifts all boats and this signals that Spotify is coming back to the table after its disastrous attempt to manipulate royalty rates. As we head towards the next CRB, this should serve as a roadmap for other DSPs that songwriters should not be treated as the enemy, but should instead be treated as valued business partners.”

Most recently, Williams collaborated with fellow JWS writer Harper O’Neill to co-produce sides and co-write her next single, “My Love, My Love,” alongside O’Neill and JWS writer Jason Nix. The single is set for release Jan. 31.

“Ed Williams writes timeless country songs. His music is inventive and deeply imaginative—you never really know what kind of story he’s about to tell, but you can always count on it being expertly crafted,” says Nina Fisher, JWS Senior Director, Creative. “Like all the Williams men, Ed has a deep respect for and knowledge of our genre. We’ve been looking forward to him being ready to dive in, and I’m thrilled that the time is finally here!”

“I’m so fortunate to have the opportunity to do what I love alongside people I love,” says Ed. “The environment that Nina and Tenasie [Courtright] create for the JWS songwriters is aspirational. I’m so proud to have them, Warner Chappell and the rest of this publishing ‘family,’ if you will, in my corner.”

Jody Williams Songs (JWS) represents Jeremy Spillman, Harper O’Neill, Peytan Porter, Vince Gill, Driver Williams, Jason Nix, Ashley McBryde, Natalie Hemby, Andy Austin, Emily Ann Roberts and Ed Williams, and is a joint venture with Warner Chappell Music.

Life & Legacy Of Will Jennings Celebrated With Nashville Gathering

Members of Nashville’s music community gathered at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum’s Ford Theater this week to celebrate the life of lauded songwriter Will Jennings, who passed away in September at the age of 80.

Jennings penned an enormous amount of beloved songs recorded by a wide range of iconic artists like Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Whitney Houston, Roy Orbison, B.B. King, Celine Dion and Tim McGraw to name a few.

The Celebration of Life reflected Jennings’ monumental contributions to music, featuring highlights of his career with personal testimonies from fellow songwriters, artists and friends. Artists who had worked alongside Jennings offered renditions of his classics that spanned decades. Special guest appearances and performances included Rodney Crowell, Vince Gill, Amy Grant, Emmylou Harris, Wendy Moten, Steve Winwood and Lilly Winwood.

Jennings, a gifted songwriter with a profound impact on music spanning country to pop, crafted timeless songs that resonated across generations. Born in Kilgore, Texas, and raised in Tyler, he was deeply influenced by B.B. King’s blues but realized three-chord blues alone wouldn’t sustain a career. After earning degrees in poetry, he became an Associate Professor of English and French literature at the University of Wisconsin. Ultimately, his passion for music led him to Nashville, where music publisher Lance Freed signed him to a deal in 1974. In 2023, Freed, All Clear Music and Fuji Music Group acquired full rights to Jennings’ entire catalog.

“On behalf of everyone at Sheltered Music, we have gathered among some of the industry’s top talent to recognize and celebrate Will’s incredible life and legacy,” said Darrell Franklin, SVP at Sheltered Music Publishing. “Will wasn’t just a master of words, but he wrote songs for the common man. He understood that language and spoke to their hearts. His work will undoubtedly continue to inspire songwriters and music lovers for generations to come.”

Dee White Previews New LP ‘Heart Talking’ At Nashville Listening Event

Dee White, Tony Brown and Leslie Fram

Dee White recently celebrated the release of his single Heart Talkin’, the title track to his new LP, at an event at Sound Stage Studios at Black River Entertainment in Nashville.

Hosted by Tony Brown and moderated by Leslie Fram, White shared three tracks from the new album, “All Day Singing,” “Whiskey Please” and “Heart Talkin’,” followed by full-band performances of “Million Miles,” “Wagon Girl” and “Up The Creek.” Produced by Brown, White’s sophomore album is slated for a June 13 release and features 10 songs, each written by the Slapout, Alabama native, along with collaborators including Daniel Donato, Sergio Sanchez, Ben Chapman, Melissa Erin, William Beckmann and Kendell Marvel.

White wrote the album’s debut/title track, “Heart Talkin’,” with Sanchez the day before recording. Then White and the musicians, including guitar aces Ilya Toshinskiy, Kenny Vaughn and Kenny Greenberg, pedal-steel player Russ Pahl, and, in one of the final sessions before his death, bassist Michael Rhodes, recorded live on the floor at Nashville’s Sound Emporium and the Castle in nearby Franklin, Tennessee.

Heart Talkin’ is the follow-up to White’s 2019 debut, Southern Gentleman, which he made with producers Dan Auerbach and David Ferguson when he was just 19. After touring in support of the album, opening for Alan Jackson, Alison Krauss, and, most recently, Jackson Dean, he brought a honed craft and new confidence to the studio this time.

“I often sit in silence, mulling over my songwriting ideas,” he says, “but I will speak up here and say, if you want to hear good, authentic country and Americana music, then please listen to Heart Talkin’.”
