Mac Davis To Be Honored As BMI Icon
/by Troy_StephensonMac Davis
BMI will celebrate the songwriting career of Mac Davis by naming him a BMI Icon at the company’s 63rd annual BMI Country Awards on Tuesday, Nov. 3 at BMI’s Music Row offices in Nashville.
The invitation-only event will honor Davis and the songwriters and publishers of the most-performed country songs of the previous year.
“We’re honored to celebrate the incredible career of Mac Davis,” said Jody Williams, BMI Vice President, Writer/Publisher Relations, Nashville. “Artists ranging from Elvis to Avicii have recorded his songs. As an artist himself, Mac’s hits were embraced and loved internationally by both pop and country audiences. He hosted his own network TV variety show, appeared in many feature films, and even starred on Broadway, but Mac’s unique songwriting ability is what really sets him apart. In every way, Mac Davis is a BMI Icon.”
The BMI Icon award is given to songwriters who have had a unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers. An all-star musical tribute will pay homage to Davis, who joins a list of past honorees that includes Vince Gill, Dean Dillon, Tom T. Hall, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams, Jr., Merle Haggard, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn and others.
As a songwriter, Davis wrote several hits for Elvis Presley, Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton and Rascal Flatts.
Also during the event, BMI will crown the Country Songwriter, Song and Publisher of the Year and salute the writers and publishers of the past year’s 50 most-performed songs from BMI’s country catalog.
Kickstarter Restructures As Public Benefit Corporation
/by Jessica Nicholson“Until recently, the idea of a for-profit company pursuing social good at the expense of shareholder value had no clear protection under U.S. corporate law, and certainly no mandate. Companies that believe there are more important goals than maximizing shareholder value have been at odds with the expectation that for-profit companies must exist ultimately for profit above all. Benefit Corporations are different. Benefit Corporations are for-profit companies that are obligated to consider the impact of their decisions on society, not only shareholders. Radically, positive impact on society becomes part of a Benefit Corporation’s legally defined goals.”
Among the company’s values and commitments listed in its charter are:
The first of these benefits will be shared beginning in February 2017.
“From Kickstarter’s inception, we’ve focused on serving artists, creators, and audiences to help bring creative projects to life. Our new status as a Benefit Corporation hard-codes that mission at the deepest level possible to guide us, and future leaders of Kickstarter,” the statement summed.
RIAA Report: Streaming Revenue Surpasses $1 Billion
/by Sarah SkatesRIAA has issued its semi-annual report on U.S. music business sales, shipments and revenues through the first half of the year.
According to the report:
During 1H, revenues from music streaming services surpassed $1 billion for the first time, growing 23 percent in 2015 to $1.03 billion, up from $834 million for 1H 2014.
Revenues from permanent digital downloads (including albums, single tracks, videos, and kiosk sales) declined 4 percent to $1.3 billion for the first half of 2015.
Total value of shipments in physical formats was $748 million, down 17 percent versus 1H 2014.
RIAA Chairman and CEO Cary Sherman commented, “The data continues to reflect the story of a business undergoing an enormous transition. There are many positive signs: continuing the trend from 2014, wholesale revenues for the first half of 2015 increased. And revenues from streaming music services continue to grow at a healthy double digit rate. The product of music and the extraordinary roster of artists represented by today’s music labels remains in high demand. That is the bedrock of a successful future.
“At the same time, intense demand and billions of streams does not always equal fair market rates or a fair playing field. Addressing that is an essential element of fulfilling the enormous promise of today’s digital marketplace.”

War Memorial Auditorium Turns 90 Today
/by Sarah SkatesTo mark the anniversary, a historical marker is planned for the corner of 7th Avenue and Union Street. The marker highlights the building’s creation, the gilded bronze statue of Victory in the central courtyard, and the auditorium’s use by the Nashville Symphony from 1926-1980 and the world-famous Grand Ole Opry from 1939-1943.
In the 1950s, it served as a frequent stop on the African American Theater Circuit, and brought artists such as Ray Charles, The Five Satins, and Bo Diddley. Later, it hosted performances by Bette Davis, Liberace, Elton John, David Bowie performing as “Ziggy Stardust,” Bette Midler, Billy Joel, the first Charlie Daniels Volunteer Jam, Willie Nelson, Barry Manilow, The Eagles, Kitty Wells, R.E.M., Lady Gaga, The Dead Weather, Mumford & Sons, and Robert Plant.
War Memorial Auditorium and its campus have served as the site of significant military and political events, such as speeches and/or events by Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Jimmy Carter, as well as Martin Luther King, Jr.
Today, the State of Tennessee owns the building, and TPAC manages the auditorium.
Unveiling the design of the historical marker today were Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam; Martha Ingram, charter and current board member for TPAC; Alan Valentine, CEO of the Nashville Symphony; Pete Fisher, VP and GM of the Grand Ole Opry; Patrick McIntyre, Exec. Dir. of the Tennessee Historical Commission; and Commissioner Bob Oglesby, whose department oversees the historic building.
