Sun Records & NMAAM To Host An Evening Celebrating Linda Martell
/by Lorie HollabaughLinda Martell will be honored by Sun Records and the National Museum of African American Music at a special public event June 4 at the museum’s Roots Theater.
The event celebrates her groundbreaking album Color Me Country, the kickoff to Black Music Month, and the May 16 induction of her hit single “Color Him Father” into the Grammy Hall of Fame. The evening will include a video tribute honoring Martell’s life and legacy, a panel discussion exploring Martell’s impact and the evolving space for Black voices in country music and live performances and appearances from artists she inspired, including jazz vocalist and social commentator Dara Tucker, country and Americana artist Amythyst Kiah, rock & blues pedal steel guitarist Robert Randolph and country artist and host of the Color Me Country podcast Rissi Palmer.
In 1969, Martell became the first Black woman to chart on country radio and the first to perform on the Grand Ole Opry, breaking barriers and rewriting the narrative of what country music could be. That same year, her rendition of “Color Him Father” became a Top 25 hit, launching a career that would shape generations of artists.
Sun Records helped reintroduce Martell’s music to a new generation in 2022, when the label remastered and reissued her landmark album Color Me Country as part of its 70th-anniversary celebration. Originally released on Plantation Records, the album’s revival affirmed Martell’s enduring influence and deepened the label’s commitment to preserving her legacy.

Seasoned entertainment attorney Rachel Guttmann has launched Gutt Law, PLLC, a new Nashville-based legal firm tailored to the modern music industry.
Prior to launching Gutt Law, Guttmann garnered over a decade of legal experience. A graduate of Middle Tennessee State University and Tulane University Law School, she began her career clerking for the Honorable Dee D. “Adding Morgan to the firm has brought a fresh perspective and an operational strength that enhances how we serve our clients,” Guttmann shares. “I’m grateful every day to work with a team that’s as passionate about helping creatives succeed as I am.”
Sunny Sweeney Blends Sass & Soul On ‘Rhinestone Requiem’ Due In August
/by Lorie HollabaughSunny Sweeney. Photo: Nash Nouveau
Lone Star indie artist Sunny Sweeney is set to release her latest album, Rhinestone Requiem, on Aug.t 1. The debut single from the project, “Diamonds and Divorce Decrees,” is out today.
An unapologetic return to her roots, the record is an exploration of resilience, heartbreak, and honky-tonk healing, crafted with Sweeney’s signature blend of raw honesty and wry wit. Co-produced by Sweeney with her longtime guitarist Harley Husbands, Rhinestone Requiem showcases a more vulnerable and defiant voice from Sweeney than ever before.
Drawing on her East Texas upbringing and years of cutting her teeth in the Nashville and Austin music scenes, the album meshes traditional country twang with hard-earned truths. Songs like “Diamonds and Divorce Decrees” and “Waiting for a Reason to Stay” reflect emotional growth, while “I Drink Well with Others” and “As Long as There’s a Honky Tonk” deliver playful defiance and honky-tonk swagger.
“I was moving out of my house in Austin, cause the rent got too high, and it was a sudden decision, but I called my mom and said, ‘hey, can I just store some of my stuff at y’all’s house for a little bit while I figure out what I wanna do?’ My mom is the best, so she said yes, and I moved all my stuff in and basically went on the road,” explains Sweeney of the inspiration behind “Diamonds and Divorce Decrees.”
“I was a gypsy for a couple years, but finally ended up buying a house and moving all my stuff into my new house—except my safe. It’s like 2 cubic square feet. Very small. She kept saying, come get your stuff, it’s in our way. So after I jokingly told her to put a lamp on it and make it a table, I said, ‘all that’s in there anyway is grandma’s diamonds and my divorce decrees.’ My country songwriter brain kicked on, and I was like wait…what? I have to write that.”
In addition to her music, Sweeney is the host of SiriusXM’s Sunny Side Up (Willie’s Roadhouse) and Sunny Side of Life (Outlaw Country).
Rhinestone Requiem Track List:
1. “Find It Where I Can” (Douglas Van Arsdale/Micheal Clark)
