Pandora Acquires On-Demand Streaming Service Rdio

pandora-logoRdio—the Oakland, California-based, on-demand streaming service providing access to more than 30 million songs, which Cumulus has a 15 percent stake of—will be acquired by Pandora in a $75 million cash deal.

Key assets involved in the deal, announced yesterday (Nov. 16), include technology, intellectual property, and talent (with the exclusion of Rdio CEO Anthony Bay). If approved, the remainder of Rdio is expected to file for bankruptcy and shutter its existing service, which currently operates in over 100 countries.

The acquisition will allow Pandora to begin to more directly competing with on-demand streaming services like Spotify, YouTube Music, Deezer, Google Play, Rhapsody, or Apple Music. Additionally Pandora may increase international availability, as the service is only available in the U.S., Australia and New Zealand.

“Whether streaming through radio, on-demand or in-person at live events, Pandora is building the definitive source for fans to discover and celebrate music,” said Brian McAndrews, chief executive officer at Pandora. “Wherever and however fans want to hear music, we intend to be their go-to destination…We seek to be the definitive source for music discovery and enjoyment globally,” he continued in describing a full on-demand paid subscription model, intended “to substantially broaden our subscription business.”

Pandora has been subject to lower rates and a more simplified licensing structure because of its limited, non-interactive streaming model (amount of skips per hour, not offering full-album streaming). Earlier this month, Pandora stated its deal with Sony/ATV music publishing will allow “new flexibility to the company’s product offering over time.” According to Variety, “music licenses typically don’t transfer to a new owner with an acquisition, so Pandora would still have to strike direct deals with the labels to keep Rdio up and running.” The current announcement will help Pandora, however, realize plans to “expanded [its] listening experience by late 2016, pending its ability to obtain proper licenses.”

Although the streaming giant currently offers an ad-free version—Pandora One—charging $4.99 a month, Pandora has seen advertising revenue grow only 31 percent year-over-year while its content acquisition costs soared 90 percent, and it failed to turn a profit after deducting operating expenses, according to Ad Age.

Rdio was founded in 2010 by Skype’s co-founders Niklas Zennstroem and Janus Friis, who remained heavily involved in the company and is thought to have invested more than $200 million in Rdio, according to Variety, where Janko Roettgers continues:

In 2013, Rdio struck a deal with U.S. radio giant Cumulus, trading 15 percent of its equity for $75 million in radio advertising, that valued the company at $500 million.

In early November, Cumulus revealed to investors that it had taken a $19.4 million writedown on its equity in Rdio this year.

“Cumulus will no longer be airing radio ads for Rdio,” reads a statement from Cumulus with no mention of a transfer of ownership or cash benefit. “Cumulus stations now streaming through Rdio Live will remain available until the Rdio service winds down, which is expected to occur after the transaction is approved.”

CMT Artists of the Year Special To Honor Kenny Rogers, Chris Stapleton

DB38032C-105D-49F9-AAE4D6A0E24F9D7D-M

Kenny Rogers and Chris Stapleton are the latest honorees named as part of the upcoming CMT Artists of the Year special, to be aired live from Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville on Wednesday, Dec. 2, beginning at 8 p.m. ET.

Rogers will be honored with the “Artist of a Lifetime” award, presented by Ram Trucks. Rogers, who earlier this year announced his retirement from touring, will be honored for his extensive music career spanning across multiple genres for decades. The entertainer is the second recipient of the honor, with Merle Haggard receiving it in 2014.

“You go through your life and your career and you try to do the right things and make the right decisions. You don’t always do that, but I have been very lucky. I am grateful for it all. This is a great honor and one I highly treasure. Being in with Merle Haggard on anything is always a thrill. To CMT, the fans, and all who made this incredible award possible, I can’t thank you enough,” said Rogers.

Following his memorable CMA Awards performance with Justin Timberlake and triple CMA Awards wins, Stapleton will be honored with the first “CMT Artists of the Year Breakout” honor. He will also perform during the show.

However, this won’t be Stapleton’s first CMT Artists of the Year appearance. He previously performed Luke Bryan’s single “Drink A Beer” with Lady Antebellum during the CMT Artists of the Year taping in 2014. Stapleton is a co-writer on the song, and Lady Antebellum filled in for Bryan after he had to cancel his appearance following the sudden death of his brother-in-law in Georgia.

Rogers and Stapleton will join previously announced CMT Artists of the Year 2015 honorees Blake Shelton, Florida Georgia Line, Little Big Town, Luke Bryan and Sam Hunt.

CMT Artists of the Year is executive produced by Switched On Entertainment’s John Hamlin. Jayson Dinsmore and Margaret Comeaux serve as executive producers for CMT.

Music industry veteran Rolff Zwiep has been named manager of Blackbird Studio, Tennessee’s largest audio recording facility.

“Rolff exemplifies the attitude and approach we have at Blackbird – professional but laid back, over-delivering every chance we get and doing everything we can to give people a great experience here,” said Blackbird owner John McBride. “I am proud that he is part of our team. Rolff is a great guy, not just in business, but as a person.”

Zwiep has more than 30 years of experience in the Nashville music business. He came to Music City from his hometown of New Knoxville, Ohio in 1983. The musician was hired by Picker’s Pickup, Nashville’s first cartage service, in 1984. Since then, he has worked for S.I.R., Drum Paradise, his own T.K.O. firm and Underground Sound as a stage manager, cartage professional and drum tech.

In 1989-1994, he was the production manager of The Nashville Symphony. He launched Blackbird’s equipment-rental business in 2004. He is a 2010 graduate of Leadership Music.

“Everything – all of the ability and knowledge I have gained – has led me to this,” said Zwiep of his appointment. “I guess you could call this a dream job.”

Blackbird Studio was founded by John McBride in 2002. It now incorporates nine studios, the rental business, Little Champion Music Publishing and Blackbird Academy, which trains producers and engineers via bi-annual classes.

“What better place to learn than in the same rooms where hit records are recorded on a regular basis?” said McBride. “I look at the artist, producer and engineer as painters – and I want to give them every color of the palette.” Blackbird is notable for its extensive collection of vintage microphones and other gear, as well as its hospitality.

Its clients include such pop stars as Adele, Green Day, Pearl Jam, fun, Mariah Carey, Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber, Megadeth, The Beastie Boys and Train. Pop legends including Bon Jovi, Bob Seger, Rod Stewart, Johnny Mathis, John Fogerty, Keith Richards, Neil Young, R.E.M., Rush, Steven Tyler and Stevie Nicks have sought out the studio.

Nashville’s finest also record at Blackbird, ranging from country Hall of Fame members Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Merle Haggard, Garth Brooks, George Strait and Kenny Rogers to current country stars Luke Bryan, Blake Shelton, Carrie Underwood, Tim McGraw, Miranda Lambert, Brad Paisley, Little Big Town, Kenny Chesney and Martina McBride, who is the owner’s spouse.

In addition, the elite of Nashville’s pop community records at Blackbird – Kings of Leon, The Black Keys, Jack White, Sheryl Crow, Keb Mo, Kelly Clarkson, Paramore, Taylor Swift, Better Than Ezra, Kelly Clarkson and more.

“We also have a lot of international clients,” commented Zwiep. “We have had British, Scandinavian, German, Irish, Japanese and artists from all over the world.”

“I am proud that we have been involved in more than a billion records sold,” said McBride. “And I think Rolff Zwiep is definitely going to continue to help great music come out of this place.”

Mike Simmons, who is Zwiep’s long-time business colleague, becomes manager of Blackbird Audio Rentals. Former night manager Jeff Woods also advances into the company’s rental business.

Blackbird Studio is located in the Nashville neighborhood Berry Hill. Known as “Little Music Row,” the area is home to more than 30 other recording studios.

Sony/ATV and Missi Gallimore have partnered to sign songwriter-producer Tommy Cecil to a co-publishing deal.

“From the first time I met Missi I realized quickly we shared the same views on everything music and hoped we’d be working together,” says Cecil. “Her track record for placing great songs is undeniable. And she is genuinely one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met. To bring that together with Troy, Josh, Tom, Hannah and the entire Sony/ATV staff has been more than I could have ever asked for. It feels like family and I’m very lucky to get to wake up and do this every day knowing I have the best in the business looking out for me.”

Gallimore says, “I’m beyond excited for Tommy as he is such a refreshing talent in this community. His passion and energy stood out to me the moment I heard his music. I am also thrilled to work alongside Sony/ATV. We have had many success stories together in the past, and I look forward to what the future has in store.”

“We couldn’t be happier to be working with a talented writer/producer,” Sony/ATV’s Tom Luteran says. “Tommy’s work ethic is second to none. His big personality and great outlook on life are positively infectious. Partnering with our longtime company friend Missi Gallimore makes this an absolutely perfect combination.”

Frankie Ballard Offers First Single From Upcoming Album

frankie-ballard

Frankie Ballard’s “It All Started With a Beer” is the most-added single at country radio this week. The track will be included on his next album, expected in early 2016 on Warner Bros. Records/Warner Music Nashville.

The single is now available at country radio, as well as iTunes and Spotify. Ballard’s upcoming third album was produced by Marshall Altman.

“This song is about how the biggest moments in our lives, the ones we find ourselves talking about down the road, usually start in an amazingly small, humble way,” says Ballard. “I’m proud of the way the production on this tune supports the lyric. When that slide guitar comes cruisin’ in, I start feeling all different types of good…and thirsty. I hope people slow dance to this song and remember why they’ve tried so hard to stay together. ”

Ballard’s hits include “Helluva Life,” “Sunshine & Whiskey” and “Young & Crazy.”
