Spotify’s Q1 Earnings Show Growth in Users, Revenue

Spotify announced its first quarter results for 2021, showing 24 percent growth year-over-year in Monthly Active Users (MAU) reaching 356 million. Premium Subscribers grew 21 percent in the same time period to 158 million. Though a significant increase, it still fell short of Wall Street’s expectations.

The company’s total revenue was up 16 percent year over year, coming in at €2.147 billion, or approximately $2.59 billion.

There was a strong increase in Q1 podcast consumption hours vs. Q4, with March hitting an all-time high in podcast share of overall platform consumption hours.

Spotify CEO and founder Daniel Ek said, “I’m pleased with the continuing momentum we are seeing across many aspects of our business this quarter, including our subscriber growth. 2020 was a very strong year for Spotify and we believe Spotify is well positioned to continue to extend our leadership globally as we move forward.”

Songwriters Fund To Roll Out New Wave Of Relief

Last summer, as COVID-19 created economic hardship for creatives everywhere, a group of songwriters created the Songwriter Fund to offer financial assistance to songwriters.

This initiative was launched with resources from Songwriters of North America (SONA) and Sony Music Publishing, amongst other private and corporate donations. The Songwriter Fund is directed by an all-woman team of acclaimed songwriters, including Autumn Rowe and Michelle Featherstone with management by Sarah Robertson.

“Everything dried up all at once for the songwriting community: royalties from streaming, as well as the ability to do gig work or be a session player,” says Featherstone. “We were talking to fellow songwriters who were asking, ‘How will I pay this month’s rent? How will I buy groceries? Will I ever work again?’”

“The Songwriter Fund is a resource for our community when there are no other options,” says Rowe. “Many writers who ran out of options received grants, and we were really grateful to help. I’d like the Songwriter Fund to feel like that friend who always has your back. Because there is so little overhead in our organization, the most possible money goes out to songwriters.”

So far, the Songwriter Fund has distributed over $400,000 in grants to songwriters who have been hit hardest by closures during the pandemic. With the repercussions of the pandemic continuing to impact the music industry, the fund is still accepting donations as it gears up to provide its most recent round of relief to songwriters.

Applications will open tomorrow (April 28). To learn more about the fund or to donate, visit www.songwriterfund.com.

Parmalee recently celebrated their latest No. 1, “Just the Way” with Blanco Brown, in a unique way, opting out of a traditional No. 1 party and shifting their focus to the frontline workers that have been integral to keeping the country running during the pandemic. After receiving nominations from hospitals across the country, the band honored ten women last month, partnering with popular jewelry company Kendra Scott to surprise each one with a Zoom call, a piece of hand-selected Kendra Scott jewelry, and VIP tickets and backstage passes to a future show (watch here).

“Having ‘Just the Way’ go No. 1 was amazing,” said Parmalee frontman, Matt Thomas. “As an artist or writer, all you can hope for is that your music connects with people and makes them feel something. Since the message of the song is all about celebrating women, we wanted to do something special for a few women that truly deserve that recognition… March was also National Women’s Month, so it was really special to be able to spend some time with and gift those women that have helped keep us safe during the pandemic.”

Anita Cochran recently played the Grand Ole Opry, and the night had special meaning for her because she was “paying it back” to the place that helped her during her battle with breast cancer. Back in 2017, the Opry Trust Fund was the first charity that helped Cochran when she was going through breast cancer treatment. She vowed that when she was back on her feet, she would try to repay the organizations that helped her. Cochran launched her own charity, The Love Anchors Fund, and started a series of concerts to help raise money to pay back the grants she received, with the Opry Trust Fund being the first beneficiary. Thanks to her October 2020 benefit concert held at Twin Creeks Resort in Winchester TN, with artist Sara Evans as headliner, Cochran was able to present a $10,000 check to the Opry Trust Fund.

“Not only am I cancer free, but to be able to pay forward the help I received is an amazing feeling. Every performer knows what an honor it is to stand in the circle on the Opry stage, and I truly feel that paying back the Opry was a full circle moment,” Cochran said.

Rodgers recently made the first donation from his newly-established The Neighborhood Fund through the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee to Music Venue Alliance-Nashville, which is working to ensure no Nashville independent music venue closes its doors permanently due to COVID-19.

“2020 and 2021 have been extremely difficult for all kinds of businesses and individuals. I wanted to make sure that I was doing my part and giving back to organizations that I feel align with my principles, which is to leave this world a better place than I found it,” says Rodgers. “I’m excited to establish The Neighborhood Fund which will give me and my fans an outlet to partner with organizations that we believe in and that are helping struggling individuals and businesses.
