Songwriters Hall Of Fame Member Chip Taylor Passes

Singer-songwriter Chip Taylor, a 2016 inductee into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, died in hospice care on March 23. He was 86.
Taylor was best known for writing the classic rock hit “Wild Thing,” a chart-topper for the Troggs, and “Angel of the Morning” for Juice Newton. Born James Wesley Voight in Yonkers, New York, Taylor was the younger brother of actor Jon Voight. He got his start in the music world as a singer under the name Wes Voight and made several recordings in the late ’50s and early ’60s, but later realized his true strength might be in writing songs for others. His first big success came when the Troggs recorded “Wild Thing” in 1966, which went to No. 1.
He later penned “Angel of the Morning” which first found success with the 1968 version by Merrilee Rush before Juice Newton covered it in 1981, selling more than a million copies and nearing the top of the charts. Other songs written or co-written by Taylor include Janis Joplin’s “Try (Just a Little Bit Harder),” Cliff Richard’s “On My Word,” “Billy Vera’s “Country Girl City Man” and Johnny Tillotson’s “Worry,” as well as songs recorded by Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Bobby Bare, Emmylou Harris and Anne Murray.
Along with songwriting Taylor also maintained a recording career for decades, releasing about two dozen solo projects, including his most recent release, 2025’s The Truth and Other Things. He founded his own label, Train Wreck Records, in 1997.
He is survived by his daughters, Kelly and Kristian; his brothers, Jon and Barry; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan.

Ben Chapman Readies New LP ‘Feet On Fire’ For May Release
/by Lorie HollabaughBen Chapman will release his new album Feet On Fire on May 22 via Soundly Music.
The project explores abandoning old patterns, making room for new beginnings, and searching for stability in an ever-changing world through Chapman’s new perspective, gained after his marriage to fellow singer-songwriter and frequent collaborator, Meg McRee, and the birth of their first child last year.
Chapman previewed the project with the title track, out now, which chronicles the life of a musician on the road.
“This song hits you in the mouth from the first note,” shares Chapman of the new track. “It’s a sonic adventure that reflects my growth as an artist and musician. It started out as a song about always being on the road and not feeling like yourself while sitting still, but as it took shape it gained a deeper meaning. It’s difficult to keep your feet planted in the moment sometimes in a world that places value on whatever comes next.”
His second collaboration with songwriter and producer Anderson East, Chapman co-wrote all 12 tracks alongside McRee, Pat McLaughlin, Aaron Raitiere and more.
“I grew up on the Grateful Dead and Dark Side of the Moon, so I wanted to pour some of that inspiration into these tracks,” shares Chapman. “This record asks you to let your hair down. It takes some fun sonic risks. It’s cohesive but it’s all over the place, too, in the best way possible.”
Along with his own music, Chapman has collaborated with artists including Muscadine Bloodline, Hayes Carll, Adam Chaffins, Brit Taylor and more. As a songwriter, he has earned cuts with Brent Cobb, Shelby Lynne, Flatland Cavalry and Marcus King, among others.
Feet On Fire Track List:
1. “Everything’s Different” (Ben Chapman, Bryan Simpson, Meg McRee)
2. “Out In The Country” (Ben Chapman, Meg McRee, Pat McLaughlin)
3. “All Day” (Ben Chapman, Aaron Raitiere)
4. “Baby Blue” (Meg McRee, Ben Chapman)
5. “Takes A Dreamer” (Ben Chapman, Anderson East, Bryan Simpson)
6. “Feet On Fire” (Ben Chapman, Anderson East, Bryan Simpson)
7. “You Say Jump” (Ben Chapman, Anderson East)
8. “So Long” (Ben Chapman, Meg McRee, Andrew Petroff)
9. “Lucy” (Ben Chapman, Meg McRee, Jay Knowles)
10. “Missing You” (Ben Chapman, Meg McRee, Anderson East)
11. “Don’t Give It All Away” (Ben Chapman, Bryan Simpson, Anderson East)
12. “Sweetheart (Ain’t It Hard)” (AJ Babcock, Ben Chapman)

The 2nd annual Band As One Nashville Concert for the Cure: Trisha Yearwood & Friends event on March 22 at the Opry House raised $850,000 for the fight against breast cancer.
Yearwood once again brought together an all-star lineup for the event hosted by Susan G. Komen, the world’s leading breast cancer organization. This year’s concert included performances from Reba McEntire, Charles Kelley, The Band Loula, Ashley McBryde, Lukas Nelson, Rissi Palmer, War & Treaty and Hailey Whitters.
Throughout the night, Yearwood shared memorable onstage moments with fellow artists, including a duet with Lukas Nelson on “Find Yourself,” a performance with Hailey Whitters of “How Far Can It Go?,” and a rendition of “Need You Now” alongside Charles Kelley. McEntire also delivered a stirring performance of “I’m a Survivor,” moving the audience that included many breast cancer survivors. The evening culminated in a finale of Yearwood and McEntire joining voices for Linda Ronstadt’s classic “When Will I Be Loved,” closing the night on a high note of unity and celebration.
“It is always an honor to join forces with Susan G. Komen for this incredible event and to lend my voice to a cause that means so much,” says Yearwood. “I love that this event brings people together – artists, fans, survivors, and the compassionate care teams who stand beside them – to help raise breast cancer awareness and inspire action. We are helping drive real progress and the continued support brings us closer to saving more lives.”

Yearwood was also honored during the evening with the Komen Promise Award presented by longtime friend Reba McEntire, in recognition of Yearwood’s unwavering commitment to advancing the fight against breast cancer.
“This concert is always about more than music – it’s about saving lives,” says Joshua Daniel, Senior Director of Entertainment Engagement and Events. “Each year, this concert grows in impact, bringing together incredible artists who are deeply committed to our mission. We are so grateful to every performer who lends their voice and to the community whose support makes this possible. Every dollar raised brings us closer to a world where no one dies from breast cancer.”
To continue raising funds for Komen, Reba McEntire and Trisha Yearwood will auction a special commemorative Band As One Nashville denim jacket, hand-painted by artist Olivia Reckert and autographed by both artists. The auction also features an exclusive collection of signed items, including McEntire’s The Hits on vinyl and her book Not That Fancy, as well as Yearwood’s The Mirror on vinyl and her Trisha’s Kitchen cookbook.
