Carrie Underwood has been honored with the SoundExchange Hall of Fame Award as one of the most-streamed artists in the organization’s 20-year history.

Underwood was presented with the award by SoundExchange President and CEO Michael Huppe at Resorts World Theatre during the latest run of her ongoing “Reflection: The Las Vegas Residency.”

“Carrie Underwood made history right out of the gate with her 2005 debut single ‘Inside Your Heaven,’ which made her the first country singer to debut atop The Billboard Hot 100,” says Huppe. “Ever since she stole our hearts on American Idol, she has been soaring high, breaking records and excelling across industries. We are thrilled to honor Carrie with the SoundExchange Hall of Fame Award.”

Underwood was the first artist to perform at the new Resorts World Theatre, where her ongoing multi-year residency began with sold-out runs in December 2021 and has continued throughout 2022 and 2023. The residency was recently extended into 2024.

Old Dominion Wraps Tour By Mesmerizing A Sold-Out Bridgestone Arena

Old Dominion wrapped their “No Bad Vibes Tour” on Friday night (Dec. 15) with a sold-out show at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. The multi-Platinum group—made up by lead singer/guitarist Matthew Ramsey, guitarist/vocalist Brad Tursi, guitarist/keyboardist/vocalist Trevor Rosen, bassist Geoff Sprung and drummer Whit Sellers—along with their openers, mesmerized the crowd with their interactive, high-energy performances.

Sparkling in a blue two-piece set and blue cowboy boots, Kylie Morgan kicked off the evening with a few fun numbers. She grooved with her guitarists while covering Gwen Stefani‘s “Sweet Escape.” Dancers decked out in denim joined her all the way from Las Vegas for songs such as “Country Girl,” a track from her latest collection Making It Up As I Go, and “I Only Date Cowboys,” complimenting her vocal talent with equally impressive dance moves. After shouting out the dancers and each member of her band, Morgan shared some of her story with the crowd.

“I started writing songs when I was 12 years old,” she stated. “I know a lot of songwriters and future artists are out there tonight, and let me tell you, it has been 14 years in the making but tonight we’re playing Bridgestone Arena, so never give up on your dreams [and] never stop believing. No one is going to work harder for you than you.

“This is an unreal moment in my life, and it’s honestly all because of this last song I’m about to play,” continued Morgan. “It has changed my life in a million different ways, and has allowed me to bond with strangers across the world.” Vibrant multi-colored lights made their way around the arena as she moved into fan favorite “If He Wanted To He Would,” which is featured on both Making It Up As I Go and her P.S. project.

Priscilla Block was next up to keep Bridgestone bumping. Her name was ablaze in aqua behind her as she started with singles “My Bar” and “Off The Deep End.” Her metallic purple top along with her matching pants and scrunchie glistened as the singer-songwriter introduced herself to the audience. Block then bopped around to “Fake Names.”

“Huge shoutout to Old Dominion for having me out on this tour. It honestly has been such a highlight for me and my career, especially playing here tonight,” the artist said to the audience. “I moved to Nashville 10 years ago, and I started writing songs when I was 15. I just found a guitar in my attic and thought ‘Man, maybe I’ll move out [here] and start doing this thing.'” Block proceeded, “I just celebrated my very first No. 1 with Justin Moore and that was [also] a big highlight for me, but is it cool if I just play y’all a song that I just wrote with me and my guitar?”

Everyone responded with cheers, and she began to strum her bedazzled, blue guitar as she told the tale behind “Me Pt.2.” Block put the luminous instrument away for “Thick Thighs,” but brought it back to close with her breakout hit “Just About Over You.” Grateful tears tinged her eyes and cell phone lighters flashed from every corner as she reminded attendees to never give up during the song’s final verse. Block continued to go out with a bang by shotgunning a beer before saying goodbye.

Sporting a white t-shirt, jeans and a hat from his Heads Up Eyes Down line, Chase Rice then took the Bridgestone stage. He had the crowd rocking with the title tack of his most recent album Way Down Yonder, and kept us going for “Ready Set Roll,” slapping every reaching hand he could. Rice asked if anyone had a cold beer in their hand and disclosed that he’s crushed more cans in Music City than anywhere else as he slid into “Bad Day To Be A Cold Beer” and “Lonely If You Are.” Warm hues hit the stage when he grabbed his guitar for “Oklahoma,” a Way Down Yonder collaboration with Southhall. Rice and his fellow guitarists united to end the album track with a short showcase of their incredible skills. He switched gears for his first No. 1 “Eyes On You,” before sharing the deeply personal story behind “Bench Seat.”

“We’re all going through something. Find a friend, phone a friend, go see them [or do] whatever you’ve got to do, because this life is hard but it’s a beautiful thing that we’ve got,” Rice told the crowd.

His black lab Jack joined him for the touching tune and instantly had every guest infatuated. Wearing a Ryan Johansen hockey jersey, Jack laid beside his best friend as he sang. The special guest received a lot of love as he made his way around the stage meeting audience members while Rice sang “Drinkin’ Beer. Talkin’ God. Amen.,” which he recorded with Florida Georgia Line. Rice raised a beer with Jack and his band to toast his fellow openers and Old Dominion as he exited.

The arena went black and the audience erupted with roars as the words “We Are Old Dominion” flashed in large white letters across the screens on stage. The headliners soon emerged and hit the ground running with “Make It Sweet.”

“Welcome to the last show of the ‘No Bad Vibes Tour,'” announced Ramsey to the packed venue. “That means we have tonight. Whatever it is that’s pissing you off, stressing you out, dragging you down or keeping you up at night, it doesn’t belong in here with us tonight. We leave that shit outside. It’s Friday night in Nashville, Tennessee, and all you have to do is fill this room up with joy until the damn roof blows off.”

He tapped a handheld xylophone during “No Hard Feelings,” and the beams blasted aqua blue as the band sang “Never Be Sorry.” The lights radiated red and a candy cane-like pattern outlined the platform as fans swayed to the beat of “Break Up with Him,” the lyrics ringing from what seemed like every seat. The bulbs were blue as Old Dominion dove into “Midnight Mess Around,” but quickly returned to red accompanied by a beating broken heart on the center screen.

Ramsey then addressed the tornado tragedy that affected Middle Tennessee a week ago and shared that they decided to donate a dollar from every ticket sold to the area’s disaster relief fund. He went on to note that Bridgestone Arena; Wasserman Music, the band’s booking agency; and Farris, Self & Moore (FSM), their business management, had all matched the donation, bringing the total raised to over $40K.

“Thank you for showing up tonight. Money helps, but music is the best medicine. If we sing this song all together as loud as we possibly can, I guarantee you it’s going to create some healing in somebody,” he expressed as everyone entered into “No Such Thing as a Broken Heart.”

The group took a moment to express their gratitude and take it all in before playing “I Should’ve Married You” from their newest album, Memory Lane. A starry night faded into the ocean sea on the screens above as they followed with the 2017 tune “Written in the Sand.”

Old Dominion then began taking song requests listed on signs made by fans in the audience after acknowledging their hard-working crew. They kicked off the request portion with Memory Lane track “Different About You” and 2015’s “Wrong Turns.” The walls bounced with “whoas” from both the crowd and the band as everyone started to belt “Snapback.” “Hotel Key” followed, putting their musical magic on full display as they jammed on various instruments accompanied by rhythmic claps from the crowd. Ramsey went around and picked up various hotel keys from the music lovers who had travelled to see them as he and his bandmates beautifully layered their vocals. They then drove down “Memory Lane” with their recently-certified Platinum title track, and just like their supporting acts, told their touching 10-year-town story. Old Dominion also announced their forthcoming bar Odies, which is set to open in summer 2024.

They serenaded the stands with smash single “One Man Band,” and had the arena go dark so that phone lights could shine from each seat. Prior to the show, the group was surprised by Sony Music Nashville Chairman & CEO Randy Goodman and the label staff with plaques for the six-time Platinum hit, which has amassed one billion streams, in addition to a Platinum plaque for “Memory Lane.”  Hands waved back and forth for their “Song for Another Time.”

Up-and-coming country star Megan Moroney then made her way on stage, surprising us for “Can’t Break Up Now.” They all took a picture before Moroney said her goodbyes and the band sang “Still Writing Songs About You.” After a show-stopping guitar solo from Tursi, the group poured themselves into “Can’t Get You” and Kenny Chesney‘s “Save It for a Rainy Day,” which Ramsey and Tursi co-wrote alongside Andrew Dorff. They led each side of the stage in cheers, and shifted to “My Heart Is a Bar.”

The five wrapped their arms around each other before “Hawaii” and “How Good Is That.” Ramesy then passed out Hawaiian leis for the final song “I Was On a Boat That Day,” looping them around fans and bandmates. Old Dominion said their last thank you and goodnight, leaving all of Bridgestone Arena on a high.

Jamey Johnson was awarded an honorary doctorate from his alma mater, Jacksonville State University (JSU), and also served as the commencement speaker during Friday (Dec. 15)’s graduation ceremony at Pete Mathews Coliseum.

Johnson is also launching a new annual music series at JSU to allow students to learn from successful recording artists and songwriters through performances, workshops and lectures. Additionally, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey proclaimed that Dec. 15 would henceforth be known as Jamey Johnson Day throughout the state, which he was born and raised.

“In my family, we have a rule about relationships: we only choose the ones that choose us back,” said Johnson. “Jacksonville State University and I chose each other 30 years ago and we still stand together today. I am proud to receive this honorary doctorate and I look forward to working with the faculty and students to raise money for scholarships and support local musicians and songwriters in their quests for success in the field of music. And I couldn’t be prouder of our Gamecocks for their recent win in New Orleans.”

On Thursday night (Dec. 14), Johnson took the stage at JSU’s Stone Center to help raise money for scholarships and the Randy Owen Center for the Performing Arts. He was joined by fellow JSU alumni Owen, Riley Green and Gordon Mote during the show, which was hosted by JSU alum Bill “Bubba” Bussey of The Rick & Bubba Show.

Johnson enrolled at the university in 1993 and studied music education. He received a full scholarship to play the French horn and mellophone in the Marching Southerners, and left JSU to join the Marines, where he served for eight years. He then moved to Nashville to launch his career in country music.

The week was a big week for the entertainer, who also performed at the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday (Dec. 16), and on Sunday (Dec. 17) sang “Georgia On My Mind” during the star-studded CBS primetime special Willie Nelson’s 90th Birthday Celebration.

‘Willie Nelson & Family’ To Premiere As A Four-Part Series On Paramount+

Photo: Courtesy of Paramount+

After receiving widespread critical acclaim following its debut at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, Willie Nelson & Family will now premiere as a four-part documentary series exclusively on Paramount+ on Thursday, Dec. 21.

Presented by MTV Entertainment Studios, in association with 101 Studios, Blackbird Presents Films and Sight Unseen, the series explores Nelson’s seven-decade career and underscores both his personal and professional highs and lows. At turns spiritual, dramatic and playful, the film spotlights the beloved music icon who has carved his rightful place among the greatest singer-songwriter and guitar players of all time, while speaking volumes through his lyrics and melodies, philanthropy, marijuana advocacy and activism on behalf of the American farmer.

Willie Nelson & Family was directed by award-winning filmmakers Thom Zimny and Oren Moverman. They also served as executive producers alongside award-winning storyteller Taylor Sheridan. The series blends their unique styles to build an intimate and cinematic memoir of the Red Headed Stranger, told in Nelson’s own voice. Filmed throughout the country, it traces back through time to weave perspectives from the artist’s actual and figurative families, including his children, sister Bobbie Nelson, fellow musicians, lifelong friends, producers, lawyers, booking agent, tour manager, driver, several Willie-ologists, concertgoers and anyone who shaped or was shaped by Nelson.

“It’s been an honor of a lifetime to live in Willie World and travel this long road with the great man and his family. Willie is the last of the consensus artists in America, bringing together people from across every divide: age, class, race, orientation, political affiliation and more. And so this series, like Willie’s music, is about healing. Let there be more of it. Let it be as deeply felt as Willie Nelson. We couldn’t be more grateful,” shares Zimny and Moverman.

“Willie’s music formed the soundtrack of my youth. His songwriting helped shape me as a storyteller,” says Sheridan. “Willie is a national treasure and his story will serve as inspiration for all those seeking their own path that leads away from the clouds of compromise. Willie has opened his life to us—warts and all—to serve as a beacon to overcoming failure, realizing dreams and keeping your compass once the dream is achieved.”

Keith Wortman, Mark Rothbaum, Julia Lebedev, Eddie Vaisman, Annie D’Angelo-Nelson, Leonid Lebedev, Mark Ankner and Sean Stuart also executive produced Willie Nelson & Family along with 101 Studios executive producers David C. Glasser, David Hutkin, Ron Burkle and Bob Yari.

Rothbaum, Nelson’s longtime manager, developed the project Wortman, Founder & Chief Creative Officer of Blackbird Presents.

“Telling Willie’s story has been a lifelong dream of ours, and we feel privileged to partner with Paramount+, Taylor Sheridan, David Glasser and their teams in bringing his story to the world,” state Wortman and Rothbaum.

Dan + Shay have joined the Spotify Billionaires Club with “10,000 Hours (with Justin Bieber).”

The duo crossed the one billion streams mark with the track, a rarity that only a handful of country artists have achieved. The collaboration was written by Dan Smyers, Shay Mooney, Bieber, Jordan Reynolds, Jason Boyd and Jessie Jo Dillon.

“A billion is a difficult number to comprehend in general, but to know that one song has been streamed over a billion times on a single platform is just incredible,” says Smyers. “We’re grateful for everyone who had a hand in creating ‘10,000 Hours,’ and everyone who took the time to listen. Here’s to a billion more!”

In the decade since they formed, Dan + Shay have garnered more than 11 billion career streams globally, multiple international No. 1 singles and 49 Platinum and Gold certifications in the U.S. alone.

Dan + Shay are making plans to take the new music to the fans in 2024 with “The Heartbreak On The Map Tour” set to kick off in February. The 19-city tour is named for the third song and early fan-favorite on their album Bigger Houses. Singer-songwriters Ben Rector and Hailey Whitters will join the duo on the new tour.

Jeannie Seely will serve as Grand Marshal of the 38th Annual Donelson Hermitage Christmas Parade presented by Gaylord Opryland’s “A Country Christmas” on Saturday, Dec 16.

Seely has been an integral part of the Donelson Hermitage community and participated in the parade for many years, as she and her husband Gene Ward joined their family on his restored 1935 Howe Fire Truck. The event takes place at 2 p.m. along Donelson Pike between Elm Hill Pike and Fifty Forward/Donelson Bowl.

“We regret that Brenda Lee is unable to attend the Christmas Parade this year, but when we were made aware that she would not be able to serve as Grand Marshal, there was no other person that we would rather reach out to than our very own Grand Ole Opry Legend and Donelson resident, Jeannie Seely! We are so grateful to her,” says Donelson Hermitage Chamber Executive Director, Terri Williams Nutter.

“Although I am as disappointed as everyone else that Brenda Lee has had to cancel her appearance in our Christmas Parade, I am truly honored to step in and serve as Grand Marshal. Those are big-size 2 1/2 shoes to fill! This has been an incredibly busy season for Little Miss Dynamite celebrating her 65th Anniversary of ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree’ and we wish her well,” says Seely. “Donelson is where I live, work, shop and play and I’m proud to participate in our community activities. See you at the Parade!!!”

Seely recently joined Flat River Band on a new tune for the holidays called “Christmas Time,” a festive original song available now for streaming and download here.

The Country Music Association honored superstar Luke Combs with the 2023 CMA International Artist Achievement Award, and country artist Kaylee Bell with the 2023 CMA Jeff Walker Global Artist Award.

Combs was surprised with the recognition backstage at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena following his CMA Awards rehearsal by Milly Olykan, CMA Vice President, International Relations & Development.

The CMA International Artist Achievement Award recognizes outstanding achievement by a United States-based artist who has demonstrated the most significant creative growth, development and promotion of the country music industry outside of America during the eligibility period.

Combs has sold out and performed over 40 shows across three continents and 16 countries over the course of a year. Throughout his tour, the 2023 CMA Single of the Year winner celebrated the release of his new album, Gettin’ Old, the companion to his 2022 record, Growin’ Up. Both albums and his tour stops have received critical acclaim, and have showcased country music’s strength and growth outside of the states. Bell was presented with the 2023 CMA Jeff Walker Global Artist Award by country hitmaker Tyler Hubbard. Hubbard surprised Bell with the award during her CMA Awards red carpet interview with the Australian-based Nine Network breakfast show, Today.

The CMA Jeff Walker Global Country Artist Award recognizes outstanding achievements by a country music artist who is originally based internationally and currently signed outside of the United States. The artist must have furthered the popularity of country music as well as brought attention to the country music format in their territory during the eligibility period.

Bell has made waves within country music’s Australian market with her radio success, international tours and major growth in streaming. In May 2023, she made history when her The Red EP received Australian ARIA Gold certification, as she was the first independent female country artist to ever achieve the milestone. In 2022, Bell was the most-streamed country artist based in Australia. She has toured internationally playing C2C Australia, C2C London, CMA Fest and CMC Rocks. Bell has also performed all around New Zealand, Australia and the U.S. as both a headlining act and supporting act for the likes of The Chicks, Morgan Evans, Brad Paisley and Ed Sheeran.

“I’m so stoked that I get to play country music,” said Bell during her interview with Nine Network’s Today. “I love New Zealand, I love Australia and I love that I get to play around those countries and now here in Nashville. I just moved to town, and this is a pretty wild way to just move to town and get one of these. This is amazing.”

The CMA International Awards honor industry executives and artists who have supported and made a difference towards the growth and promotion of country music in the international marketplace. Nominees are recognized in six categories acknowledging their dedication and efforts in growing opportunities for country music in their local territories. Winners in the four remaining categories will be presented their awards in the coming months.
