New Morning Team for WSM 95.5 The Wolf

Over the last few months, Cumulus Radio’s 95.5 The Wolf (WSM-FM) in Nashville has been assembling a new team for its morning show, the Wake Up with the Wolf Show. Show host Rick Marino, who has been a fixture on the Nashville airwaves since 1994, was joined in May by another well-known market face, TV meteorologist and newsman Tim Ross.

As reported in last week’s MusicRow chart report, Beth Brightwell, a 10-year radio and morning show veteran of North Central Florida, has also joined the new morning crew. Completing the team at WSM is Ashley Mann, who offers a unique perspective, having stinted at KZLA (Los Angeles) and produced syndicated seasonal radio shows. Mann has also worked as a successful label songwriter and demo/commercial jingle singer. The team’s first official broadcast takes place tomorrow (7/29) from 5:30 to 10 a.m. on 95.5 The Wolf.

Cumulus Senior VP of Programming, Jan Jeffries comments, “A nation-wide search was conducted over several months for the perfect complement to round out the cast of WSM-FM’s The Wake Up With The Wolf Show. Rick, Beth, Tim and Ashley remind me of a modern-day version of the legendary TV series Cheers. Each personality on the show is distinctly different, making for an unpredictable and consistently entertaining morning show.  We are extremely enthusiastic to kick off mornings each day with this highly talented group.”

“The team offers something for everyone to like,” stated Russ Penuell, Program Director of 95.5 The Wolf (WSM-FM). “It’s a distinctive team that offers a variety of fresh perspective to get your morning going…like that first freshed-brewed cup of coffee.”

DISClaimer Single Reviews (7/28/10)

There’s a lot to like this week.

Among the new super sounds are efforts by Mark Chesnutt, Train, Kenny Chesney and Matt Kennon. Newcomers Kathe Knight, Manning-Dickson and The Ketucky Linemen are also welcome additions to our audio environment.

Despite superior efforts by Misters Kennon and Chesnutt, Kenny Chesney handily wins the Disc of the Day award.

Our three newcomers also ran their races well. But the sibling trio The Kentucky Linemen cross the finish line as the DisCovery Award winners.

RICHIE ALBRIGHT/Makeup And Faded Blue Jeans
Writer: Merle Haggard; Producer: Bill Green; Publisher: Sony-ATV Tree/Shade Tree, BMI; Electric Cactus (210-654-8773)
—You’re only asking for trouble when you set yourself up to be compared to Haggard. Needless to say, he comes up way short of the Master.

KENNY CHESNEY/The Boys Of Fall
Writer: Casey Beathard/Dave Turnbull; Producer: Buddy Cannon & Kenny Chesney; Publisher: none listed, BMI/ASCAP; BNA (CDX)
—Audio magic. It’s a wistful look back at playing high-school football that is rich with imagery, emotion and honesty. A brilliant piece of songwriting, an awesome production and a perfectly moving vocal performance. Country-music records simply do not come any finer than this.

THE KENTUCKY LINEMEN/Walk On
Writer: Ebert/Andy Wren/Brian Randle/Tim & Jeanette Culpepper/Buck & Kathy Jarrell; Producer: Ebert West; Publisher: Moo Town, ASCAP/BMI/SESAC; MooTown (CDX) (www.mootownentertainment.com)
—Hearty harmonies are the hallmark here. These men sing with immense gusto, and the hooky, mid-tempo song is a solid, rolling winner.

TRAIN/Hey Soul Sister
Writer: Pat Monahan/Espen Lind/Amund Bjorklund; Producer: Martin Terefe & Espionage; Publisher: none listed, BMI/ASCAP; Columbia (CDX)
—These San Francisco soft rockers are best known for the pop hits “Drops of Jupiter” (2002) and “Calling All Angels” (2003). This highly tuneful, acoustic bopper is quite enjoyable and is “country” enough for these ears. Come on in, boys. The water is fine.

MATT KENNON/You Can Still Wear White
Writer: Natt Kennon/Aaron Scherz; Producer: James Stroud, Julian King, Matt Kennon & Aaron Scherz; Publisher: Songs of Loud/Matt Kennon/Songs of Elevation/Big Loud Bucks, BMI; BamaJam (CDX)
—Matt Kennon’s “The Call” was one of best indie singles of the past few months. He proves it was no fluke with this driving, propulsive, pounding, power-packed anthem. I still love his soulful, raspy delivery. Make this man a star.

JOHNNY TILLOTSON/Not Enough
Writer: Johnny Tillotson/Nancy Tillotson/Cary Park; Producer: Johnny Tillotson & Nancy Tillotson; Publisher: none listed, BMI; Maydu (CDX) (www.johnnytillotson.com)
—Tillotson was a teen idol of the ‘50s and ‘60s with hits such as “Poetry in Motion,” “It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin’,” “Send Me the Pillow You Dream On” and “Talk Back Trembling Lips.” His catchy, upbeat comeback single finds him still in fine voice. The lyric about thanking our troops is timely and winning.

MANNING – DICKSON/Drive
Writer: Jason Manning/Jason Dickson; Producer: Manning-Dickson; Publisher: none listed, BMI/ASCAP; Blue Boot (www.manningdickson.com)
—Breezy, melodic and well sung. Its only drawback is its somewhat compressed, murky sound.

KATHE KNIGHT/I Will
Writer: Michael P. Heeney/Liz Rose; Producer: John R. Craig; Publisher: Sony-ATV, BMI; TAM (track) (828-758-2349)
—Intimate sounding. Her soft, delicate delivery focusses your attention on the very well-written lyric of considering cheating by picking up a stranger in a bar. In addition to her fine performance and the song craftsmanship, the track also benefits by being produced with crystal clarity. Lend this your ears.

MARK CHESNUTT/Lovin’ Her Was Easier
Writer: none listed; Producer: Pete Anderson; Publisher: none listed; Saguaro Road (track)
—Mark’s new CD is titled Outlaw. It is a salute to the music of Waylon, Willie, Hank Jr. and the rest of the boys who shook things up on Music Row in the 1970s. This tune tips its hat to both The Glaser Brothers, who had a big hit with it in 1981, and to its maverick songwriter, Kris Kristofferson. The singer’s expressive, resonant baritone and the spacious production put the spotlight on Kris’s extraordinarily poetic lyric. Quite a song and quite a performance. An A-plus effort by all concerned.

DAISY MALLORY/Do You Think Of Me
Writer: Daisy Mallory/Ben Caver; Producer: none listed; Publisher: Daisy Mallory/Sony-ATV, ASCAP/SESAC; DM (602-538-7878)
—There already is a Taylor Swift. Find your own sound.

Debut Music From Paltrow/McGraw Flick

Gwyneth Paltrow starring as "Kelly Canter" in "Country Strong."

The first music from the much talked about movie starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Tim McGraw appeared in insider in-boxes today (7/26), courtesy of RCA Records. The label is handling radio promotion for Paltrow’s recording of the film’s title track, “Country Strong,” which features background vocals from Vince Gill and Patty Griffin. The song was written by Jennifer Hanson, Tony Martin and Mark Nesler and goes for adds Aug. 23. It is the first single from the original motion picture soundtrack, set for release October 26 on RCA Nashville. No word on whether or not McGraw will be offering music from the movie.

Filming for the project took place in Nashville earlier this year, and Country Strong will be in theaters on Dec. 22. The project—which originally had the working title of Love Don’t Let Me Down—centers around a down-on-her-luck country singer trying for a comeback (Paltrow), her husband and manager (McGraw), a beauty queen turned singer (Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester) and a gifted songwriter (Friday Night Lights’ Garrett Hedlund). Oscar winner Paltrow also sang in the 2000 flick Duets.

Weekly Chart Report (7/23/10)

SPIN ZONE

New Arista Nashville artist Adam Brand was in Alabama recently as part of his first radio tour in the U.S. after making a name for himself as a recording artist in Australia. Brand played his upcoming single, “Ready For Love,” for The Big 95/WHMA Anniston’s Stuff a Bus Fundraiser. (L-R): WHMA OM Tex Carter, a Chick-fil-A cow and Brand.

It’s a tennis match at the top of the CountryBreakout Chart and the latest volley comes from Keith Urban, whose “I’m In” recovers its No. 1 positioning after being displaced last week. Blake Shelton’s “All About It” slips back to No. 2, only nine spins behind Urban. Both records are young, and anything could happen at this point. Strong records from Zac Brown Band (“Free”) and Lady Antebellum (“Our Kind Of Love”) are a few steps back at No. 5 and 7, respectively, but it shouldn’t be too long before they’re vying for the top spot.

Don’t count out a run at the top by Kenny Chesney in the near future, either. His latest, “The Boys of Fall” is white hot. After nailing the biggest debut at No. 49 last week with no prior reports, the song received an additional 812 spins in this chart cycle to move on to No. 26. Reba’s “Turn On The Radio” has accomplished a similar feat—it debuted at No. 50 in the previous chart, and has now rocketed up to No. 35.

The biggest debut of this week goes to Southern country rockers Blackberry Smoke, whose “Good One Comin’ On” showed up at No. 64. Others making debuts include Sherry Lynn’s “What A Day To Shake A Heartache” at No. 70, Martin Ramey’s “Twisted” at No. 71, Amber Hayes’s “C’Mon” at No. 72, Chuck Wicks’s “Hold That Thought” at No. 77, David Bradley’s “Soak It Up” at No. 79 and Flynnville Train’s “Preachin’ To The Choir” at No. 80

Frozen Playlists: KKOW, KNCQ, KYYK, WATZ, WBKR, WDHR

RADIO NEWS
WTRS/Ocala morning personality Beth Brightwell recently announced her departure from the station after 10 years where she was a fixture on the popular “Dave, Beth, and Bo Morning Show.” She will be moving to Nashville to join WSM morning host Rick Marino on the “Wake Up With The Wolf Show.”

“I told her it was kind of like if my wife left me for Keith Urban—I’d have to look at her and say ‘Well, I can’t blame ya for going,’” jokes WTRS PD/morning co-host Dave Tyler. “Beth is super talented and we knew that one day she would leave for bigger pastures. I think the broadcast industry is only now getting a small taste of her abilities and she will blossom at a great station like WSM! We will miss her and hope she returns our calls once the limos start picking her up in the morning!”

Brightwell’s first day on the job is Thursday, July 29. Starting Monday, July 26, the WTRS morning show will be known as the Dave & Bo Show.

Pandora Reaches Major Listener Milestone

Personalized online radio service Pandora announced at this week’s New Music Seminar that 60 million people have registered as listeners. Pandora CEO and President Joe Kennedy spoke at the Seminar’s New Media Movement where he shared the milestone news with influential players of the music industry.

“Pandora plays the music of tens of thousands of artists every day,” Kennedy said. “It’s a very promising sign for the industry that music fans are so quickly embracing this new form of radio.”

“The New Music Seminar convenes the architects of the next music business and Pandora is certainly one of them,” said New Music Seminar Director Tom Silverman. “This milestone is a major building block in the foundation of the next music business. We congratulate Pandora on its achievement.”

Pandora’s collection consists of hundreds of thousands of songs from 90,000 separate artists, 80 percent of which are played each month. In the curated Pandora collection, each piece of music is carefully analyzed by musicians to create a unique musical DNA that makes up the Music Genome Project and enables Pandora’s unique form of personalized radio. www.pandora.com

BigChampagne Unveils “Ultimate Chart”

BigChampagne Media Measurement has announced the release of the Ultimate Chart (www.ultimatechart.com), a ranked list of the week’s most popular artists and songs. Integrating data from categories including Song and Album Sales, Radio Airplay, Online Audio and Video Plays, and Fans/Friends/Followers, the Ultimate Chart is the first and only chart that looks at all of the ways in which music is popular, online and off. The first published Ultimate Chart is the Ultimate 100, available now.

The news was broken yesterday (7/20) at the New Music Seminar, currently underway in New York, during the opening remarks conversation between NMS Founder Tom Silverman and BigChampagne CEO Eric Garland.

BigChampagne’s partners and sources for the Ultimate Chart include retailers, online and traditional broadcasters (radio and television), major content companies, subscription services, social networks and other venues where fans demonstrate their passion for music: Yahoo!Music, Amazon, iTunes, YouTube, VEVO, MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, MTV, Clear Channel, MediaBase, AOL, Napster, Microsoft Zune, We Are Hunted, LastFM and many more.

“The explosive popularity of music in the digital age has given us access to a quality of information about the connection between artists and fans previously unimagined,” said Garland. “The internet launched a thousand charts. But the marketplace is asking, ultimately, what does it all mean? There has been no satisfying answer, until now. The Ultimate Chart examines music sales and radio airplay and the access to music, and socializing around music, that are growing much faster. We’re rewriting the top of the charts for the new music business and enlisting the help of its chief architects to surface the most popular music that the charts have overlooked.”

“The evolution of the Ultimate Chart will revolutionize the way artists and labels measure the fan/artist relationship,” Silverman said. “This information will eventually allow artist and their representatives to maximize the monetization of that relationship.”

“This chart is long overdue and represents for the first time an
accurate view of where popular music is today,” said Tamara Conniff, Founder/Editor of The Comet and former Billboard Editor-in-Chief and Associate Publisher. “Music is not just about sales, it’s about interaction—listening, watching, playlisting, evangelizing and socializing. The Comet (TheComet.com) will be publishing the Ultimate Chart and using BigChampagne’s data for analysis, prediction, and consumer trends.”

BigChampagne will also develop the Ultimate Chart for independent and DIY artists and has partnered with a who’s-who of top marketing and distribution partners, including Tunecore, CDBaby, Disc Makers, MySpace Music, Reverb Nation, Topspin, Nimbit and many more to ensure eligibility for all artists and to produce unprecedented insight into the independent music world.

“We’re examining the fastest-growing aspect of the music business for which there has not been a standard measure, by the numbers,” Garland said. “Every artist can be counted, and every artist will be counted.”

The Ultimate Chart is one of the new features of BigChampagne’s ground-breaking business intelligence dashboard, BC Dash Ultimate, and will be widely syndicated across BigChampagne’s media and press partners. The Ultimate Chart is a ranked list of the week’s most popular artists and songs.

DISClaimer Single Reviews (7/21/10)

Is it hot enough for you?

With temperatures on Music Row soaring into the upper 90s this week, I’m taking every opportunity to stay here at my desk. Including penning today’s roundup of new country sounds.

Luke Bryan is always eager to please. And he certainly does that this week with his irresistible “Someone Else Calling You Baby.” It earns him our Disc of the Day award.

With “Georgia Clay,” Josh Kelley coasts to an easy win as the DisCovery Award winner. I can’t wait to hear the rest of his project. If you didn’t get the chance to see him, as well as Randy Montana, opening shows on the last Lady Antebellum tour, seek both of them out in other settings as soon as you can. You won’t be disappointed.

JASON STURGEON/Simple Life
Writer: Jason Sturgeon/Dane Clark; Producer: Dane Clark & Jason Sturgeon; Publisher: none listed; Toolpusher (track)
—His vocal is super expressive—I really like the resonance and individuality in his phrasing. The song could have easily fallen into a ditch of cliches, given its small-town theme we have heard so often before. But he treats the topic with imagination, and the weaving melody and clear production values are added pluses.

CLAY WALKER/Where Do I Go From You
Writer: Don Cook/Clint Daniels/Ryan Tyndell; Producer: Keith Stegall; Publisher: Sony-ATV Tree/Katy’s Own/Sony-ATV Acuff-Rose, BMI; Curb (track)
—The follow-up to “She Won’t Be Lonely Long” has a rocking, swampy groove. He handles the lickety-split verbal pace with aplomb, even managing to sneak in the occasional improvised melodic lick. And although it is sung in his highest register, it never sounds forced. A winner.

JONALEE WHITE/Naked As Fools
Writer: Kay Harris/Molly Pauken/Jonalee White; Producer: James “Bubba” Hudson; Publisher: Harken/Smile Pretty, BMI/SESAC; Lick (track) (www.jonaleewhite.com)
—Softly jaunty. Pleasantly easy-going. Gently listenable.

LUKE BRYAN/Someone Else Calling You Baby
Writer: Luke Bryan/Jeff Stevens; Producer: Jeff Stevens; Publisher: Murrah/Bug/Katy Lou/Big Loud Bucks, BMI; Capitol Nashville (track)
—This one got my heart pumping before he ever uttered a note. The driving percussion and insistent guitar riff grabbed my ears at once. By the time he got to the hooks-a-plenty first chorus, I was bobbing my head and totally lost in this. The lyric might be a pang of heartbreak, but the record is a groovathon.

ROB BAIRD/Could Have Been My Baby
Writer: Rob Baird; Producer: none listed; Publisher: Tiltawhirl/Carnival, BMI; Carnival (track) (www.robbairdmusic.com)
—Squalling out on the open prairie. His strangled, semi-soulful vocal is buried too deep in the mix, and it takes forever to get to the chorus hook.

RANDY MONTANA/Tuesday’s Gone
Writer: Ronnie Van Zant/Allen Collins; Producer: Jay Joyce; Publisher: none listed; Hip-O/UMG (track)
—This is doubtless an emotional month for Randy Montana. On July 1, Joshua Ragsdale—his cowriter on his single “Ain’t Much Left of Loving You”—died following a protracted illness. On Friday, Randy stages his debut on the Grand Ole Opry. Yesterday, his standout track was part of the release of Sweet Home Alabama: The Country Music Tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd. This Wal-Mart exclusive also features fellow Young Turks such as Randy Houser ( “Simple Man”), Shooter Jennings ( “Call Me the Breeze”), the Eli Young Band ( “Gimme Three Steps”), Eric Church, Uncle Kracker and Jamey Johnson. But Mr. Montana’s treatment of this oft-overlooked ballad is one of the set’s most majestic tracks.

DAN SHAFER/False Love
Writer: James L. Herman/Jerry Vandiver/George McClure; Producer: George McClure; Publisher: Trowbridge/North Fork, BMI/ASCAP; JIP (www.jiprecords.com)
—The track rolls right along, and the song is sturdy. But his pop-sounding vocal lacks country grit and believability.

JOSH KELLEY/Georgia Clay
Writer: none listed; Producer: none listed; Publisher: none listed; MCA Nashville
—Josh is the brother of Lady A’s Charles Kelley. He formerly recorded in a pop/rock vein. But this soaring-yet-earthy, summer-romance tune places him squarely in the country mainstream. He held me on every word, and the dynamics in the production tickled my ears from start to finale. Play it again.

ANDY VELO/Hank it Up
Writer: Charlie Monk/Rick Huckaby; Producer: Ted Hewitt; Publisher: Carlie Monk/13th Avenue/Head Coach, BMI; LoozLip (CDX) (678-997-5692)
—“Hank,” in this case, refers more to Bocephus than to his honky-tonking daddy. Mr. Velo bellows this as a thumping rocker, not as the lovesick blues. Muscular, sweaty and assertive, to say the least.

THE BELLAMY BROTHERS/Jalapenos
Writer: David Bellamy; Producer: David Bellamy, Howard Bellamy & Randy Hebert; Publisher: Bellamy Brothers Music, ASCAP; Bellamy Bros. (CDX) (www.bellamybrothers.com)
—It says here that this is “banned by radio.” Gee could it be that, “burn your ass tomorrow” line? Or the one about the little blue pill making you “too erect” perhaps? Actually, this is a boatload of fun. And, as usual, soaked in hypnotic Bellamy rhythm.
