Toby Keith: New No. 1, New Song, New Video

TKO Artist Management celebrated Toby Keith's No. 1 single, "Made In America," at this past weekend's Atlanta stop on his standing-room only Locked & Loaded Tour Presented by Ford F-Series. (Back, L-R): TK Kimbrell - Pres./Owner, Berkley Myers - Assist. to TK, Laura Covington - Dir. of Special Markets, Toby Ketih, Cassie Petty - General Manager, Alex Bridge - Artist Representative, Taylor Shults - Artist Representative, (Front, L-R): Emily Jennings - Receptionist, Misha Williams - Publishing Administrator & Jessica Johnston - Office Assist.

Toby Keith celebrates his 29th No. 1 single, “Made In America.” It topped MusicRow’s CountryBreakout Chart and is one of the fastest rising releases of his career.

For Keith, the song is almost an unexpected hit. “I’ve done so much patriotic stuff that I have people sending me and bringing me those kinds of ideas daily,” he says. “And when I hear most of this stuff it’s like, I’ve already done that. I’ve already done my warrior song— ‘American Soldier.’ I’ve already done my battle cry— ‘Courtesy Of The Red, White And Blue.’ I’ve already done my fun uptempo— ‘American Ride.'”

Frequent Keith co-writer Bobby Pinson offered up an idea anyway. “We got to talking about how when we were kids, if your car broke down your dad could take a wrench, WD40, bailing wire and a screw driver and about fix it,” Keith explains. “We jumped on that, started writing. I just couldn’t get past thinking that my old man was that old man.”

“Made In America” is one of 11 new tracks on Clancy’s Tavern, which will be released Oct. 24. A Deluxe Edition also includes four extra songs that are covers recorded live at Keith’s 2010 Incognito Bandito club show at The Fillmore in New York City.

A new song from Keith’s Clancy’s Tavern is “Red Solo Cup,” an ode to the classic party beverage receptacle written by Brett and Jim Beavers with Brad and Brett Warren. The four writers also star in the song’s video.

Guests in the clip include TV host Craig Ferguson; sports icons Roger Clemens and Larry Bird; fishing guru Jimmy Houston; entertainers Jeff Dunham (with Bubba J), Carrot Top and Lance Burton; and fellow recording artists Sammy Hagar, Ted Nugent, Eric Church, Joe Nichols, JT Hodges, Carter’s Chord, Rose Falcon and Trailer Choir’s Butter.

Blake Shelton’s “God Gave Me You” emerges at the CountryBreakout No. 1 song for a second week, but there’s quite a battle shaping up just below him. Positions No. 2 and 3 remain occupied by Thompson Square’s “I Got You” and Taylor Swift’s “Sparks Fly,” respectively, both of which add over 120 new spins in this chart. If you think that’s impressive, check out positions 4-6. Brantley Gilbert’s “Country Must Be Country Wide,” on the way to living up to its title, moves to No. 4 with a gain of 187 spins. Miranda Lambert’s “Baggage Claim” is right behind at No. 5, following a 253 spin gain. And Lady Antebellum’s “We Owned The Night” bests them all at No. 6, picking up a 301 spin gain.

Aussie sibling trio The McClymonts is now inside the top 40 at No. 38 with “Wrapped Up Good,” marking the sisters’ highest charting single to date. One spot behind them at No. 39 is red-hot new Dierks Bentley single, “Home,” which earn’s the week’s biggest spin increase in its second week charting. Also joining the Top 40 are Mark Wills’ “Crazy Being Home” at No. 37 and Craig Morgan’s “This Ole Boy” at No. 40.

Sea Gayle/BNA artist Wade Bowen is currently out on his first radio tour, and stopped for a visit with WUBE/Cincinnati. Bowen’s sixth studio album--his first for a major label--is currently in the works. (L-R): WUBE Cincinnati PD Grover Collins, Bowen

Sony Music titans Kenny Chesney (BNA) and Brad Paisley (Arista) both experience strong debuts of new singles. Chesney’s “Reality” makes its first appearance at No. 67, while Paisley’s “Camouflage” shows up at No. 70. This is the first week either song picked up any reports. A little farther ahead, Trent Tomlinson’s “A Man Without A Woman”(Skyville) is moving impressively well with a 75-59 jump in its third week charting. Could be that love is in the air right now, as Kevin Fowler’s “That Girl” (Average Joe’s) is on to No. 51 in its third week, and newcomer Andy Gibson’s “Wanna Make You Love Me” (R&J Records) is up to No. 46 after eight weeks.

CountryBreakout No. 1 Song

Sometimes one trip on the roller coaster isn’t quite enough, and you race back around to ride it again, hopefully doubling the thrills. Artists and record promoters know the feeling pretty well, without even having to strap themselves in for a ride at Disney World.

This week it’s Blake Shelton’s “God Gave Me You” getting a second turn at No. 1 on the CountryBreakout Chart, a full 100 spins ahead of its closest competition. Always a popular artist with this chart’s reporters, Blake’s latest marks his seventh consecutive CountryBreakout No. 1, starting with his 2008 cover of Michael Buble’s “Home.”

Blake also recently announced his Well Lit & Amplified Tour 2012, which will hit 27 cities starting January 2012. The winter trek will kick off in Toledo, Oh and end in March at Las Vegas’ Mandalay Bay, with supporting guests Justin Moore and The Voice finalist Dia Frampton. VIP tour packages will be available for purchase on his website.

Not that he’s sitting still until January or anything. Just recently the world got to see the video premiere of Blake’s version of “Footloose” from the new movie remake on Entertainment Tonight. Additionally, he’s scheduled to perform on the CMA Awards Nov. 9, where he’s nominated for his first ever Entertainer of the Year Award as well as Male Vocalist of the Year. And somehow in between all of this, he and wife Miranda Lambert have found the time to co-produce Neal McCoy’s new album.

Heck, at this rate Blake might even be up for a third trip on the coaster.

iHeartRadio v. Pandora

I did not go to the iHeartRadio concert last month in Las Vegas. It would have been fun, and I doubt that anyone will ever put together a show this big again. However, I did read plans are already in place for next year.

You all noticed that it was a RADIO company that was able to pull it off, right? Okay, it was the on-line version of the RADIO company. I read that it cost $10 million but over 10 million people logged on and/or downloaded the new app. It seems to me Clear Channel got a great return for the marketing money.

I do not work for Clear Channel. I have never worked for Clear Channel. But I am pulling for Clear Channel to successfully blunt Pandora. I know that at least half of the people reading this article could not care less who wins this battle because a pipe is a pipe is a pipe.

But that is not true. The obvious advantage that Clear Channel has is that they also have about 1000 radio stations in their stable. They have thousands of boots on the ground. They have long-standing relationships with artists and record company representatives. Clear Channel is in it for the long haul.

They have the ability to impact music on their hundreds of music radio stations. Let’s think about that for a minute. If there are 5 million people using the “create your own station” on iHeartRadio, is that information being made available to their stations? I hope so. I hope that someone will say, “Here is some research about what songs are being marked positive or negative across the platform.”

We know that listeners and viewers are using everything at their disposal when looking for media. I watch HBO GO and Netflix on my Android phone. I use radio.com, IHeartRadio, TuneIn Radio and read the Wall Street Journal on my tablet.

We’re not tied to the standard radio any longer but we’re still listening to the radio. I am always going to lean to the players who think enough about the industry to include ‘radio’ in their name. It is NOT a small thing.

Everything at the recent National Association of Radio meeting in Chicago was digital. Bob Pittman, the new CEO of Clear Channel, gave an enthusiastic defense of radio versus Pandora at the meeting. The irony is that this was less than 10 days before Clear Channel touted their digital Pandora fighter in Las Vegas.

I want there to be no question that I see the irony but no hypocrisy. Clear Channel’s foray into that field is a defensive move as much as an attempt to build a new business. Radio should be behind Clear Channel in this effort.

I do not want to give Clear Channel an in against my radio stations. If I compete against a Clear Channel station in market X I am not going to run ads for IHeartRadio, but I would not be running ads for Pandora either. As an aside, do you ever wonder why over the air TV stations run ads for HBO? And then wonder why the audience for over the air TV has decreased year after year? I digress.

Those of us involved in radio or the record industry have a challenge every day to be the most entertaining, most compelling choice for the consumer. Newcomer Casey James is not jealous of Keith Urban (okay bad choice…we’re all jealous of Keith Urban). Casey knows that he has to work hard and find the best music, get out and see station personnel and work his way up the charts.

I have clients that compete directly with Clear Channel stations. I am not jealous or afraid of what these stations do with IHeartRadio. What we try to do is produce a better terrestrial radio station. What we try to do is build websites that are attractive to the listeners. We try to offer information and entertainment that they listeners want.

The bottom line for Clear Channel and all radio stations is that we have the bullhorn. Radio is the big guy in this space. I have an example where David is really Goliath.

A lot of manufacturers have made a run at the iPad. Most have fallen by the wayside: HP, Samsung, Motorola, etc. Why would Amazon think they can make a dent in Apple?

“Amazon has an advantage that other tablet manufacturers don’t have in that millions of people already visit its site on a regular basis,” said Evercore Partners analyst Ken Sena, in the Sept. 28 Wall Street Journal.

Radio has that same advantage over Pandora. It is just that until recently radio companies failed to provide an attractive alternative. It is now in the field. CBS radio will surely come with something similar in the coming months and then some entrepreneur will build something for smaller companies.

But behind it all, the 295 million people who listen to radio each week will know about it.

Movement is the name of the game on the CountryBreakout Chart, and there’s no shortage of it this week. Moving up to take the No. 1 spot is Blake Shelton’s “God Gave Me You,” followed by Thompson Square’s “I Got You,” hopping over No. 3 to land at No. 2. Taylor Swift’s “Sparks Fly” is also in the hunt at No. 3, as it garners an added 186 spins. Also moving are Brantley Gilbert’s “Country Must Be Country Wide” at No. 5, Miranda Lambert’s “Baggage Claim” at No. 7, and Rascal Flatts’ “Easy” at No. 9.

Through the Top 30 are several additional movers and shakers. Jason Aldean’s “Tattoos On This Town” is knocking on the door of the Top 20 at No. 21 after six weeks, and Montgomery Gentry’s “Where I Come From” picks up 121 spins at No. 23. It’s a dead heat between Zac Brown Band’s “Keep Me In Mind” and Luke Bryan’s “I Don’t Want This Night To End,” at No. 27 and 28 respectively. Just a few paces off at No. 30 is Chris Young’s “You,” which appears to be out-gaining all the rest.

Dierks Bentley leads a group of big debuts with his latest single “Home,” sticking at No. 59 in its first week being reported. Also in its first week of reports is Jake Owen’s “Alone With You,” which debuts at No. 77 after a 210 spin gain. Just ahead is Trent Tomlinson’s “A Man Without A Woman,” debuting at No. 75 after scooping up an impressive 20 new adds.

CountryBreakout No. 1 Song

Have you ever been listening to music in the car and heard a song so powerful that you had to pull over to give it your full attention? That’s what Blake Shelton did the first time he heard “God Gave Me You” in the car, and then he decided to record it himself.

Fast forward to about three months later and Blake’s version of “God Gave Me You” is this week’s CountryBreakout No. 1 song, his fourth in under two years after “Hillbilly Bone,” “Who Are You When I’m Not Looking” and “Honey Bee.” Originally written and recorded by Christian artist Dave Barnes, “God Gave Me You” is a soaring ode to devotion, and as the story goes, reminded Blake of his relationship with wife Miranda Lambert. As a testament to the song’s deeply personal meaning for Blake, the video opens and closes with a home recording of Lambert on the eve of the couple’s wedding.

By any measure, it’s been a great couple years for Blake Shelton. On top of his engagement to Lambert and their coup of the Male and Female Vocalist CMA Awards in 2010, Blake’s high profile judging spot on The Voice has elevated his media celebrity to an entirely new level. Just recently, he was honored with his first-ever CMA nomination for Entertainer of the Year, and he’ll be performing on the Nov. 9 telecast of the show.

Why Is There No Country Station In New York?

Arbitron says that there are almost 16 million people in the New York Metro area. I counted 97 stations getting some mention in a recent ratings month. Some were out of market but still collected listening in the NY metro.

Really? 16 million people and 97 stations (some getting listening only from a family in Queens) and no room for a Country station? To be fair, four of the 97 stations are programming country but none are major players or registering significant levels.

None of the big boys are willing to step up and give Country Radio a shot in New York? Clear Channel is the most successful company when it comes to programming Country. They have some of the smartest programmers in the format. Gregg Swedberg could jump in there and be hugely successful.

CBS has Country stations in Chicago and Detroit and outside of LA in Riverside and they do well. They have people who could do it. Though looking at their stations I don’t know who would change format. Those two companies are killing it in New York. Maybe WWFS would do better in Country, though a 3 million-plus cume is not something to walk away from any time soon.

Emmis, who should still be kicking themselves for flipping KZLA/Los Angeles before PPM years ago, has two Urban stations down the rankings ladder a bit. They have smart Country guys in Indianapolis with Bob Richards and Charlie Morgan. They could do it.

I suspect Cumulus will try and fix WPLJ before giving up that legendary signal and staff. Cox has a Long Island station that might be a player in Country Radio.

In LA Saul Levine used to feel that if KKGO did too well someone else would come along and challenge Go Country. I would tell him that the station could be top 10 in AQH (which it was a couple of years ago and is again) but that the low cume numbers would keep others from jumping in the format.

That is why no one is going Country in New York. KKGO has found some loyal Country Music fans. We had some two years ago that were contributing a lot of the station’s listening, and it’s happening again. The station is well-programmed and is getting long time exposed. BUT the cume is not in the elite category, and it never was. Heck, KKGO has the second (or third) highest cume in the format and is 25th in its own market.

Cume has become even more significant in the PPM ratings and if the format cannot collect enough cume it is never going to be consistently successful. Lose that family that is contributing to the ratings and you lose a great deal.

Now there is a difference between New York and LA. New York is 20% Hispanic and LA is 40% Hispanic. That said, walk the streets of New York and you hear a hundred different languages. Not a real positive for Country Music, because there are not a lot of foreign language countries where Country Music does well.

Ed Salamon, the father of big city Country Music Radio, used to say that this diversity was a benefit to Country because if English was your second language at least the format told stories and listeners could connect with the story. Well, New York is certainly the most diverse city in America.

There has been success with Country Music Radio in New York. Ed was very successful at WHN in the ‘70s. I learned a great deal about big city Country Radio working for him there at WHN.

The late Dene Hallam had success in New York with the first FM playing Country Music there.

Later WYNY had some success. Michael O’Malley did a fine job with the station and when he left I spent about a year there and we had a strong station with great talent until the parent company sold some of the signal off and they lost a Country stronghold in New Jersey.

The fourth attempt failed miserably. The Tri-cast was signal challenged and never really took hold.

Of course there are New York stations that play Country Music. Scott Shannon is a real friend of the format on WPLJ but it is obviously kept to the pop influenced portion of the genre.

Look at the EOY finalists for the CMA show. One of the acts gets consistent play on WPLJ. New York radio listeners are shut out of Brad Paisley, Blake Shelton, Jason Aldean and (most of) Keith Urban. These are our big guns and they are silenced on the radio.

The Band Perry got some AC and CHR play in the last year, but the other four CMA New Artist nominees are not on the radio in New York. This is not the way to grow the format.

In the past the CMA has taken a lead in supporting Country Radio in LA and NY. Whatever can be done in the future would be beneficial for all of us.

New York Country Radio would have to be a little different today than it was in the past. A current-based format has to be current with CHR turnover. That would grow the cume and then programmers would have to work on keeping the listeners longer. But building a foundation that is dependable is not going as easy as doing it in Dallas or Atlanta.

Without outing him, as he works at a Country Station in a BIG market, my friend used to comment that he has never ridden a tractor, doesn’t travel dirt roads and doesn’t fish or hunt. True, but he drinks Tequila, knows a crazy girl or two and has drunk dialed in the past. It all works.

George Strait gets a second turn in the CountryBreakout Chart’s No. 1 spot with “Here For A Good Time,” as Blake Shelton’s “God Gave Me You” starts to put on a little pressure at No. 2. Eli Young Band’s “Crazy Girl” moves up to No. 3 with a gain of 119 spins, inching ahead of Thompson Square’s “I Got You.” New to the Top 10 is Miranda Lambert’s “Baggage Claim,” which lands at No. 8 ahead of Darius Rucker’s “I Got Nothin’” at No. 9.

In the spirit of George Strait’s No. 1, Texas makes a strong showing elsewhere on this chart. Sunny Sweeney’s latest, “Drink Myself Single,” notches the week’s highest debut at No. 64.
