Charlie Cook On Air: The Class of 2013

Charlie Cook

High schools and colleges are all in the midst of graduating their seniors. I read last weekend that high school seniors are so accomplished and work so hard today that they are more than ready for the late nights and drinking they will experience in college. The class of 2013 is prepared. I am thrilled that high school is finally getting students ready for their next adventure.
Well, all this talk about late nights and drinking got me thinking about country music and the class of 2013. I put a great deal of thought into the group of artists that are ready to graduate to the next level. I know I am going to leave some deserving acts out and it is tough to gauge where performers are today in their status level.
Is Chris Young, with six No. 1 songs, on superstar level yet? Many people think he should be but it is a zero sum game and if we agree the top 10 acts are the top 10 acts then everyone else is still looking up. I believe Chris has one of the best voices in the business but we would all agree he isn’t Kenny Chesney yet. I remember when Kenny Chesney wasn’t Kenny Chesney so Chris is one of my class of 2013. I saw his headlining show at the Ryman late last year and he has come a long way since he played for us in Los Angeles a few years ago. Even then he had a confidence that comes with being a great picker and singer.
I saw Lee Brice the other night on the Brad Paisley show in Pittsburgh. Lee is knocking so hard on the superstar door his knuckles are leaving dents. He totally commands the stage. He has an Eric Church quality. You do not take your eyes off Lee on stage. Florida Georgia Line nearly leads the class of 2013. They came out of nowhere in the last 18 months and have dominated radio play, and not only country radio airplay. “Cruise” refuses to slow down with more spins on Top 40 than on Country.

Hunter Hayes

I am looking for newish acts that have made considerable strides this year. Not necessarily rookies but someone who has said, “Yo, look over here.” Like Kip Moore. His work on the road was first noticed by the college kids and now he is becoming a staple on the radio. I think Brantley Gilbert is on the list. Each one of his songs gets radio attention. As long as he doesn’t stray too far from radio friendly songs (anyone remember “Kickin’ It in the Sticks”?), he will continue to be an act we look back on and say he really came into his own in 2013. Hunter Hayes is probably the Valedictorian. He is a superstar in waiting who, like FGL, has made his early mark on Top 40 and AC radio too.
I personally love Gloriana, but it is like they were held back a year. I don’t know what is holding them back. They are great both on record and in person and there are not three more likable kids out there. Maybe they need to get on a big ole tour and kick some warm-up butts. When they won the AMA award a few years ago, I thought, bingo! But their numbers have not come up consistently. A little the same with Easton Corbin. It seems like he has to fight harder than he should for radio space. This is a talented kid who sings the heck out of his records. I think he will graduate this year though.
I know I have left your favorite off the list. If so, let me know. First, though, ask yourself, are they guaranteed radio players (the name of the column is On Air, remember)? If they are really on the cusp of breaking out this year or continuing to move up the list, I will correct it next week with mea culpas.
If you’re in Nashville this weekend for the CMA fest, look for me to say hello and tell me in person who you think I slighted.

The Band Perry has rightfully performed its way to the top of this week’s MusicRow Chart, to land at No. 1 with the single “Done.”
Written by brothers Neil and Reid Perry with Jacob Bryant and John Davidson, “Done” took flight after performances by the Perry trio on the 2013 ACM Awards, the ACM special Tim McGraw’s Superstar Summer Night and on American Idol.
The Dann Huff-produced single has been the group’s second hit from its album Pioneer.
Catch the sibling trio on the road this summer as special guests on Rascal Flatts‘ Live and Loud tour.

Charlie Cook On Air: Radio's Role In Introducing New Artists

CCook-onair-sm111So I drove to Landover, Md. last weekend to kick off summer with a few of my friends including Kacey Musgraves (not actually a friend as I have never met her), The Eli Young Band, Eric Church and Kenny Chesney. They are also not really friends either but they are terribly nice when we chat for a few minutes. Summer is a great time to see friends, have a pop or two and maybe grill some hot dogs and burgers. It is also the best time of the year for country music and country music radio. The format has the biggest stars touring America with big shows each summer and up and coming acts. Some acts have been away from radio for a while and are out there playing fairs away from the stadiums and arenas.
The No Shoes Nation Tour is a big one out there this year. Kenny puts together an incredible six hour show each year and this, the 2013 version, is no exception. Kenny brought along newcomer Musgraves this year and while about 10 percent of the eventual crowd was in the house when she took the stage at 5 p.m., she worked like there were a million people in Fed Ex Field. Jason Aldean is out with his 2013 Night Train Tour and last year Jason was the spring board to Luke Bryan taking the format by storm, eventually winning the ACM Entertainer of the Year. On tour, Aldean is joined by Jake Owen and newcomer Thomas Rhett. By the way, once concert goers get a listen to Rhett live, there is going to be no stopping this kid.
Miranda Lambert and Dierks Bentley are Locked and Reloaded with Lee Brice, Randy Houser and Joanna Smith providing the early ammunition. This is another opportunity for your station’s listeners to be introduced to superstar and newer performers. Carrie Underwood extended her Blown Away Tour throughout the year and has done no harm by keeping Hunter Hayes on the bill. Hayes is no longer a newcomer but not all fans have yet to experience him live in concert and when they do, will come away very impressed.
The aforementioned Luke Bryan is out with his Dirt Road Diaries Tour and has Thompson Square and Florida-Georgia Line warming up the crowd. No affront to Ms. Musgraves, who will quickly build a loyal following, but the opening acts to the other tours I mentioned should guarantee fans will get their beer cups filled during breaks and not during warm up acts. There will be no 10 percent crowds for these acts who have established radio track records already.
I could list another half dozen tours this year, including Brad Paisley, Tim McGraw, Taylor Swift, and on and on. Additionally, the best weekend for country music in Nashville will be going on next week during the CMA Music Fest. Plenty of music, not only the four nights at LP Field, but from morning through evening, there will be music stretching from 6th Ave. to the river. The non-stadium shows are filled with newcomers and middle level acts that are great entertainers. The summer is the season for country music.
Back in Landover, the kids were at Fed Ex Field to dance, drink and party as they kicked off the summer in high (word chosen carefully) fashion. Sunday afternoon—late in the afternoon—after they woke up, I’m sure they were still texting and tweeting about the event.
Country radio must aggressively get on board. Take, don’t send, listeners to these concerts. Host pre- and post-parties on-air when the big stars come to your area this summer. Find and participate in the summer fairs that have new, local and established acts. I believe that it is important for the local country station to educate the market about the range of country artists out there. If country radio does it job and “sells” acts like Kacey Musgraves, the fan will make an effort to be in their seats to hear her. This is how we learned about Kip Moore on Church’s tour last year.
I am lucky to live in a part of the country where I am within a few hours drive of many events. In fact, this weekend I am going to go to Pittsburgh and see Brad Paisley, Lee Brice and Chris Young, and maybe meet new friends The Henningsens. I know I will be there in time to see them all perform because my local station has gotten me excited about their music.

DISClaimer: Summer Gets A New Soundtrack

Lady Antebellum

Lady Antebellum

The soundtrack for the summer is unfolding, starting this week. Joe Nichols, the Cody Bryan Band, Grant Langston and Andy Gibson all have new singles that have sunshine in every groove. In fact, “If I’m Going Nowhere” is strong enough to reel in a DisCovery Award for the Cody Bryan Band. But country-music people love to weep as much as they love to rejoice. So I also direct your attention to the downbeat lyrics of the new singles by Love and Theft, Sawyer Brown and, most especially, Lady Antebellum, who wins the Disc of the Day with “Goodbye Town.” Heartache has never sounded lovelier.
THE ROYS/Gypsy Runaway Train
Writers: Lee Roy/Morry Trent; Producers: The Roys and Andy Leftwich; Publishers: Mandolin Man/Cinderella Man, SESAC; Rural Rhythm
-These two continue to release singles like a country act. But their sound becomes more and more mainstream bluegrass with every release. The picking on this is dazzling.
cody bryan band11GRANT LANGSTON/Trouble Knows
Writer: Grant Langston; Producer: Paul Q. Kolderie; Publisher: Grant Langston, BMI; MSG (track)
-Sprightly and infectious, this hillbilly bopper introduces a singer-songwriter of rare originality. A ditty with a built-in smile.
CODY BRYAN BAND/If I’m Going Nowhere
Writers: RAby/Chandler/Noveskey/Bryan/Delahoussaye; Producers: Matt Noveskey and Kevin Butler; Publisher: none listed; CBB (track)
-This driving country-rocker has a forward momentum that’s pretty hard to resist. The band definitely gets its licks in as the tale unfolds of an aimless drifter. “If I’m going nowhere/I’ll get there on time” is his motto.
GWEN SEBASTIAN/Suitcase
Writers: Gwen Sebastian/Nicole Witt; Producer: Louis Newman; Publishers: Music of Open Road/Words and Music/Brentwood Benson/Quick Witt, ASCAP/BMI; Flying Island
-She’s kicking the cheater out and has packed up her heartache with his belongings. As usual, Gwen sings with loads of moxie, fire and personality. As both a performer and a writer, she’s a talent to be reckoned with.
CASSADEE POPE/Wasting All These Tears
Writers: Rollie Gaalswyk/Caitlyn Smith; Producers: Dann Huff and Nathan Chapman; Publishers: Jill the Dog/Music of Stage Three/Songs of Cornman/BMG Chrysalis, BMI; Republic Nashville
-The lyric is way too word-y. The melody is awkward and ungainly. Somebody call a song editor. Also: There’s nothing particularly “country” about it.
SAWYER BROWN/Shadows of the Heartland
Writers: Bobby Pinson/Chris Bergsnes; Producer: Mark Miller; Publisher: Stage Three, no performance rights listed; Beach Street (CDX)
-This brilliantly written, multi-textured portrait of life, love, loss and death in rural America rings with truth and authenticity.
JOE NICHOLS/Sunny and 75
Writers: Michael Dulaney/Jason Sellers/Paul Jenkins; Producers: Derek George and Mickey Jack Cones; Publishers: Warner-Tamerlane/Desert Treasure/Sony-ATV Cross Keys/Becky’s Boy/Sony-ATV Tree, BMI/ASCAP; Red Bow
-And you thought he had a voice that was born to cry. Joe proves he can soar in joy with this marvelous tempo tune, tailor-made for summertime good times. Go ahead: Get up and twirl around the room.
LOVE AND THEFT/If You Ever Get Lonely
Writers: Kyle Cook/Lisa Drew/Michael Dulaney/Steven Dale Jones/John Waite; Producer: Josh Leo; Publishers: EMI April/Ella Bella/Grand Line/Universal Z Tunes/Jersey Girl/Sony-ATV Harmony/Lights of Denver/JB Daniel/Water Bound/John Waite, ASCAP; RCA
-He can’t stop missing the one who left him for L.A. and begs for just the tiniest bit of contact from her. Fabulously melodic and radio-ready in the extreme.
ANDY GIBSON/Best Thing
Writers: Steve Moakler/Luke Laird; Producer: James Stroud; Publishers: Nam Jam/Songs of Kobalt/Universal-Careers, BMI; Curb
-Innocent, romantic, sweet and as lightweight as the froth on a soda-fountain drink.
LADY ANTEBELLUM/Goodbye Town
Writers: Dave Haywood/Charles Kelley/Hillary Scott/Josh Kear; Producers: Paul Worley and Lady Antebellum; Publishers: Beards and Bullets/30A Getaway/Kobalt/Hobbs Hill/Global Dog/Lunalight, ASCAP/SESAC; Capitol Nashville
-Led by the heartbroken, soul-shattering voice of Charles Kelley, the trio keeps you completely in its thrall throughout this pulsing, yearning, lump-in-throat performance. Supremely well written and brilliantly produced, this is the reason these folks are the stars they are.

Charlie Cook On Air: A Partnership Is Born

CCook-onair-sm11In the past I have been on both sides of the issue of radio doing a deal with Sprint to include a radio chip in their cell phones. I love the idea of your smart phone becoming a broadcast radio. There is really no reason to exclude a radio tuner from the smart phone except it cuts into the data usage the cell companies depend on for income.
Well Sprint and radio have found level ground on this issue. Sprint needs to do something to help it stand out from Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile. Radio needs a partner willing to help it get both feet into the online world and on to smart phones. And a partnership is born.
My concern in the past was about the money radio was paying to Sprint in order to get on the phone. I was afraid radio was never going to be able to partner with the other three companies without also having to come up with millions of dollars in advertising for each of those companies. I spoke with Emmis CEO, and the driving force behind this plan, Jeff Smulyan about his ideas and why this is the way for radio to get in the game. Jeff is 100 percent correct that leaving the phone to Pandora, Slacker and Spotify will ultimately leave radio off the landscape and then off the listener’s agenda.
He quickly answered my advertising concerns by going back to the beginning of Wi-Fi in America. Verizon and AT&T were not on board with Wi-Fi when it was first introduced. It wasn’t until the consumer said loudly, “Give me my Wi-Fi” that they got on board. Mr. Smulyan sees the same thing happening with the NextRadio app ready for launch in the coming months. And the advertising supplied by radio is not going to be used to sell the phone or the service, thus not cutting into what is one of radio’s most important categories.
There is no question cell phone manufacturers are as hyper-sensitive to the consumer’s likes and dislikes. If this wasn’t true most cell phones would not look alike. They all do about the same thing and today how many pixels your cell phone camera has seems to be the battleground. This app and it’s associated programming, is really slick and looks like it will be fun to operate. It puts a great deal of information in the listener’s hands and allows a great deal of interactivity. Certainly it will become a cutting edge area if the consumer likes it. And the other carriers will be forced to get on board.
It also creates opportunities to make non-traditional revenue for broadcast radio. Streaming has not been profitable for radio. And certainly it is not profitable for the other streaming companies. Pandora is learning that losing money on increased usage by listeners cannot be made up by increased volume. The hole gets deeper and this is where the NextRadio app has a key benefit.
A significant point to be made about this system, versus the other systems, is the NextRadio app does not use your data plan. That’s right. Today listeners are surprised when they get an email from their carriers informing them that using the streaming music services gobbles up a lot of their, now capped, data plans. You can upgrade most plans for $20-$60 a month. Smart phone users will have to answer. I can tell you I already pay $260.00 a month for my family plan so the odds of me adding to that are slimmer than a Galaxy S4.
As this plan moves forward radio is going to have to get on board and provide spots for network use and spend more air time promoting this service so it doesn’t get lost in all of the cell phone company messages in print and on TV and radio every day. To the artists and record companies, who know radio is the avenue to getting their music to the listeners, this is a win-win. It is another way for you to reach the record buying listener, as the app makes clicking and buying very easy.
Record companies would be served to learn more about this system. They would be smart to encourage it and be there with information the consumer can access to make your artists out in front of what should be the next step for free over the air radio.
