Charlie Cook On Air: Halfway MVPs

It is the 186th day of 2013. Not the exact middle of the year but close enough. This means it is time to look at the “Halfway MVP’s” for the year.
Some of them are obvious. Blake Shelton has not only had No. 1 after No. 1, he has become the top mentor to new talent on The Voice. He has taken three kids in a row to the edge of their dreams. Shelton’s current CD is the best of his career and he will be on the Ten Times Crazier Tour beginning in Virginia Beach on July 19. I can tell you Luke Bryan is as hot as a July afternoon in Nashville. During the CMA Music fest, I sat for 20 minutes and watched young ladies (I could stop there) climb up on a building window sill to have their photo taken next to a Luke Bryan poster in the window. You can also make the case that Bryan got the most screams during his LP Field performance Thursday night.
In the under 25 category, Hunter Hayes is a consistent act. Not only is he a staple on Country radio but “Wanted” got additional play on AC radio. Kacey Musgraves still has a couple of weeks in this category; opening for Kenny Chesney makes her a player for 2013. Taylor Swift is the winner. She will most likely win the award for a couple more years.
Using a baseball analogy, Florida Georgia Line is the best double play combination in Country music. The duo’s first two singles were actually home runs. It is going to be fun to watch the duo battle between Thompson Square and FGL in coming years at award shows. Love and Theft could be in there too.
In the “I sing country music on the radio but I am a rocker in concert” category, Brantley Gilbert has to be the MVP. For you Eric Church fans, of which I am one, I think Eric is country even though he looks like he could go either way.
The Group of the Year category is tough this year. Little Big Town enjoyed an incredible 18 months with “Pontoon” and “Tornado,” though that is pretty much off Country radio today because of the recent tragedy in Moore, Okla. Certainly they were the comeback group of the year last year and they will get a real boost when they host the CMA Music Fest TV show in August. The Zac Brown Band has been an instant add to radio and their live show is a must see. Zac has also become a record executive and will soon be in the food business. Lady Antebellum just keeps putting out Top 10 songs. And of course The Band Perry, which has gotten a great deal of exposure with their “Outnumber Hunger” charity and their lead at the ACM concert/party in Las Vegas in April. They followed up their debut CD with Pioneer and scored almost 130,000 sales the first week. I go with TBP as the MVP.
The MVP female is a tough one. There are three All-Stars and then a few others. Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood and Taylor are the undisputed leaders. A case can be made for each to get the MVP. Miranda is winning everything in sight on the award show circuit. Carrie has shown she is the hostess with the mostess (that was 2012 though) on the CMA Awards and Taylor continues to outsell everyone on the block. I think both Miranda and Taylor were incredible at the CMA Music Festival last month. They were both confident and in control of the stage when they were on. Carrie got short shrift because of the rain Sunday night. Plus, why the rock song?
I’m going with Miranda.
I believe there should be a Rookie of the Year award in addition to the Under 25 category. This should be someone that really came to light this year. A pretty tight window. Rachel Farley, Weston Burt, Dakota Bradley, Joel Crouse, Charlie Worsham, Brett Eldridge, Tyler Farr, Chris Janson and Jon Pardi are all in the running. For just radio success, I have to go with Brett Eldridge but all of these acts, plus a handful more, have assured that there will be lists like this for years to come.
Let me know your thoughts.

Kelly Named Vice President, General Manager at CDX

Joe Kelly

Joe Kelly

Joe Kelly has been appointed Vice President/General Manager at CDX. Kelly, who was instrumental in the launch and branding of CDX in the 90’s, had recently rejoined CDX President Paul Lovelace with the concept of taking CDX into a digital platform.
“Joe has the vision, expertise and enthusiasm to keep CDX at the forefront of our 23-year tradition of providing new music and information to the worldwide Country Radio and Music Communities,” says Lovelace. “For the past year, Joe has lead the efforts in redesigning the CDX website, creating an outstanding home page and download center – very convenient and easy to navigate. Along with our bi-weekly CDX Disc service, all past and current volumes are now available for radio station downloads. Additionally, CDX INSTATRACKS make a single release available to radio instantly at the download center whenever our client wants it made available, down to the minute.”
“CDX has been a key player in exposing music to the masses for over 20 years, and now I am excited to help expand that platform and bring new digital ideas to radio stations and our label partners,” says Kelly. In addition, music directors have the option to hear new releases “on the go” with the CDX Smart Phone Application.
Kelly can be reached at [email protected].

'MusicRow' No. 1 Song

chart
underwood see you again111Said goodbye/turned around/and you were gone, gone gone.
Carrie Underwood not only stands at No. 1 on this week’s CountryBreakout Chart with her latest single, “See You Again,” but she does so with 345 spins to spare.
As one of three songs penned by Hillary Lindsey, Dave Hodges and Underwood in preparation for the Chronicles of Narnia soundtrack, the song was excluded from the Disney series in favor of “There’s A Place For Us.”
Thankfully, Underwood exposed the track as the fourth single on Blown Away, and has since performed “See You Again” across various media channels, including a recent tribute performance to tornado-stricken Oklahoma during the 2013 CMT Music Awards.
Take a peek at the track’s music video below, directed by Eric Welch.

Charlie Cook On Air: Country P1s Still Lagging

charlie cook new image1111111111

Charlie Cook

Arbitron and Edison Research have been measuring radio users since 1998, attempting to gauge the impact of digital platforms on consumer behavior. Today I will update you on the Country format P1s. These notes are based on 223 Country format P1s. The term P1 refers to first preference listeners. These 223 indicated their first preference radio station was a Country station.
Sixty-seven percent of all radio listeners have access to a Wi-Fi Network setup, but the Country P1s lag that number a bit. Only 63 percent CP1 (Country P1s) have this access. This impacts usage of services like Pandora and Spotify. This also impacts the amount of online listening done by CP1. Still, 26 percent reported listening online (to both their AM/FM station and online only services) in the last week. The overall radio listener reported 33 percent.
Pandora recently changed their model in the last two months. This study was fielded in January and February, so there could be a slight adjustment in their usage, but overall 20 percent of the study respondents have listened to the service in the last week. Only 16 percent of the CP1 has done so. I would like to believe this reflects a satisfaction with their local Country radio station but overall online access most likely has a bigger role in this than anything.
It is not as though the CP1 are not aware of Pandora and other online services. Over 60 percent are aware of Pandora, 47 percent are aware of iHeartRadio (higher than the overall radio user, which tells me the Clear Channel Country stations are doing a good job of selling the service to their listeners), and almost 20 percent know about Spotify.
YouTube is becoming one of the most popular on-demand services online. Thirty-seven percent of the overall radio listeners have watched YouTube in the last week.
By just looking around you’ll notice people never get too far from their cell phones. If you see someone panicking they are probably more than 10 feet from their phone. This is consistent with CP1. More than half of those listeners are tethered to their phone and 30 percent sleep with their phones. Seriously, because 30 percent wake up to their phone as an alarm.
The Country core is way behind the general radio user in owning a Smartphone, 53 percent to 42 percent. This may be the reason CP1 are behind in online services. I use my Smartphone for almost everything in audio and video. About a quarter of the CP1 own a tablet but as more and more people move from laptops to tablets we will certainly see this number increase and at the same time should see increased audio and video services.
Country fans have not shied away from social media services. Sixty percent have a profile on some social media platform and 23 percent report using the services/websites several times per day. CP1 Facebook users have an average of 261 friends. I wouldn’t think all of these friends are country music fans, but as a station that plays country music, if you can begin conversations about your station and the music everyday your material can spread quickly. When you think of a listener using Facebook, think of that person standing in front of 261 people.
And I stress Facebook because it is Facebook and all the rest. In fact Facebook leads by such a number that there is no real second place. When it comes to Country radio, we love to talk AM/FM. 91 percent of CP1 use AM/FM in their car and this is the highest number of any format. The general music population reports 84 percent of listeners who use AM/FM in their car, so you can see Country is much stronger than the other formats. AM/FM radio has held on to their leadership position as the number one source for new music, and 41 percent CP1 say staying up-to-date with new music is very or somewhat important. Country music programmers should be confident their listeners appreciate the job being done by AM/FM on a weekly basis.
Many stations like to stay in touch with their listeners through Email, but only 8 percent of the audience has signed up for this communication model. Stations have an opportunity here to open this to their audience.
And finally, because we’re all here to make a decent living, 61 percent of the CP1 reported they have listened to AM/FM radio before arriving at or during their last shopping visit. We know the immediacy of radio impressions pays off for the advertising clients who use enough frequency to make an impact on radio listeners.

Charlie Cook On Air: Go Where The Kids Go

I have been a research geek forever. Going back to my early years in radio with Bill Moyes research and up through Stratford and Edison media, I have always been fascinated to see what the consumers like about radio, music, personalities and trends. This is why I am so impressed with what CMA Senior Director of Market Research Karen Stump does with her staff for the country music/radio community.
I’m not sure how many of my radio colleagues have seen the most recent study, released last month. The radio and record industries are tied to the consumer’s discretionary time and money. Radio can use this material to make some money with clients and the record industry can intersect the listener’s lifestyle for their entertainment dollars.
This research identified how families spend their money on entertainment. The study looked at country music fans and helps us understand how our users spend their flexible time. Most of these studies are culled from the 13,000 country music consumers who have opted into the CMA program. This helps us identify active partisans. Otherwise known as “our target.”
One finding is the amount of money, energy and time families spend on entertainment. Eighty-six percent of country music households with children participated in paid family activities in the last 12 months. Top single day events include going to the movies (maybe a GREAT venue to run a radio station commercial), attending concerts and music festivals, and visiting family entertainment centers like bowling, miniature golf, skating rinks and go-carts. Zoos, museums, water parks and camping are all high on the list of family activities.
If families pack the car for multi-day trips, amusement parks like Disney and Six Flags were the number one choices. If you think the economy is putting pressure on money spent for family entertainment, think again. Forty percent of families participate in weekly events and 72 percent of country music families, that make more than $75,000 per year, spend $100 or more per month on single day family activities.
I wonder what it would take for a family of four to attend a concert? With tickets, parking and refreshments would this one day event be closer to $400? Is there an opportunity to put together some newer act tours where the performers are not doing 100 free shows a year but families can enjoy the time together and at the same time see great live music? And the performers can generate a little income and merch money.
In fact, attending a live concert/music festival scored an A+ for family enjoyment. The highest score recorded. The zoo and camping were close behind. I do like that 73 percent of the consumers say “spending quality time as a family” is the primary goal of participating family activities. This tells me the money is not a deal breaker. Walt Disney World and one of the Six Flags parks lead the pack for top parks visited by country music households in past 12 months. As an aside, I live three miles from Six Flags Magic Mountain and I have NEVER been there.
For radio station sales staffs, this report gives you a heads up to the listener’s plans in the immediate future. Disney World, Universal Studios, Sea World and Six Flags lead the desired list and maybe there is an opportunity for sales and or promotions. For artists, knowing these are the places your fans are going to go over the summer, maybe tying in or doing shows at the parks would be an opportunity. Check out the study at cmaworld.com, and drop Karen a note telling her how important this information is to the format’s health.
Happy Travels…in and out of town.

[Updated] Pandora Purchases Broadcast Radio Station

pandora_logo[Update (6/13/13)]: BMI has ended negotiations for publishing rates with Pandora and has decided to file suit in rate court. Billboard’s sources claim BMI management believes further negotiations with Pandora would be futile, in light of what publishers are calling a questionable maneuver to obtain lower rates than the 4.1 percent of revenue that Pandora paid to publishers last year.

Pandora has signed an agreement to purchase Rapid City, S.D. radio station KXMZ-FM, a small-market Hot AC format broadcast radio station.
The strategic purchase is reportedly a way for the company to qualify for Radio Music Licensing Committee (RMLC) agreements regarding royalties and public performances of musical works from the PROs.
An op-ed by assistant general counsel at Pandora, Christopher Harrison explains the streaming service has been discriminated against and exposed to copyright infringement as a result of ASCAP members withdrawing new media rights:

ASCAP and its members have abruptly shifted away from 100 years of business practice and attempted to create a new right to ‘withdraw’ from ASCAP the right to license certain songs on what is essentially a case-by-case basis.
Terrestrial broadcasters and their Internet properties were given preferential treatment via a January 2012 agreement between the RMLC and ASCAP and BMI. To put this in perspective, at least 16 of the top 20 Internet radio services that compete with Pandora operate under the RMLC license that has not been made available to Pandora.
So, today we are also announcing the purchase of KXMZ-FM. This acquisition allows us to qualify for the same RMLC license under the same terms as our competitors. While this might seem like an unexpected move for Pandora, it makes sense even beyond the licensing parity. Pandora excels in personalizing discovery and terrestrial radio is experienced in integrating with a local community. We look forward to broadcasting our personalized experience to the community in Rapid City, an area where over 42,000 residents already use Pandora. And we will apply Pandora’s insights about listening habits to program music that accurately reflects local listeners’ evolving tastes.

ASCAP and NMPA responded harshly to the acquisitions on June 12. “Pandora is trying every trick in the book to brazenly and unconscionably underpay and take advantage of the creative labor that produces the core offering of their business — music written by individual songwriters and composers,” said ASCAP president Paul Williams (see his full statement). David Israelite, president and CEO of the NMPA stated: “While other digital partners are making voluntary deals, Pandora chooses to sue the very creators who make its business possible.”
In addition to EMI and Sony/ATV withdrawing new media rights from ASCAP and BMI in previous years, Billboard highlights forthcoming new media withdrawals dates from ASCAP as follows:
