Reba McEntire To Star In New NBC TV Series Based On ‘Fried Green Tomatoes’
Reba McEntire is set to star in a new series based on Fried Green Tomatoes that is in development at NBC, MusicRow has confirmed.
Legendary TV producer Norman Lear is executive producing along with McEntire on the hour-long drama series, which brings the story up to present day with main character Idgie Threadgoode (McEntire) returning to Whistle Stop after a decade away, and wrestling with a changed town, an estranged daughter, a faltering cafe, and a life-changing secret.
Lear’s producing partner Brent Miller will executive produce the project under their Act III Productions banner, and Fannie Flagg, author of the original novel and co-writer of the film’s screenplay, will also executive produce. Jennifer Cecil is attached to write and executive produce on the series.
The novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe was originally published in 1987. The film version was released in 1991 and starred Kathy Bates, Jessica Tandy, Mary Stuart Masterson, Mary-Louise Parker, and Cicely Tyson.
