Charlie Cook On Air: Comic Con Comes To Nashville?

Charlie Cook

Charlie Cook

I have been to the Country Radio Seminar. I have been to National Association of Broadcaster conventions, the Conclave, the big electronics convention in Las Vegas and even a few Radio and Record Conventions. I have never been to Comic-Con and that is the one I want to attend more than anything. I have added Comic-Con to my very shallow bucket list. I am making my plans right now to attend next year’s gathering.
This year more than 130,000 people attended Comic-Con at the 2.6 million square foot San Diego Convention Center. From what I’ve heard about the convention, more than half of those 130,000 attendees are dressed up like its Halloween on Krypton. Now, the San Diego convention is not the only one but it is the biggest and many other locales have started their own versions. In fact, there are at least 12 more from Ashbury Park, N.J. to Williamsport, Pa.
For fun I thought I would imagine that Comic-Con comes to Nashville and envision how country music stars would dress at Comic-Con.
Avengers: The Zac Brown Band. The Avengers originally consisted of Thor, Iron Man and the Hulk. You see it now, right?
Iron Man: Kenny Chesney. You seen those guns? I am sure they are all iron. A billionaire, entrepreneur, playboy.
Captain America: Toby Keith. No additional comment needed.
The Hulk: Lee Brice. I love Lee but the shirts need to bump up a size.
Spider-Man: Brad Paisley. He weaves the best lyrical webs. (You try this. It is not as easy as it looks.)
Thor: Blake Shelton. Thor is the husband of the golden-haired goddess Sif. Sif in Viking is Miranda Lambert.
X Men: Florida Georgia Line. You know, of course, the X stands for X-tra power and it seems to me FGL is getting extra play on other formats.
Storm: Carrie Underwood. You’ve seen the costume, right?
Fantastic Four: Little Big Town. They had a fantastic year. And many of you may not know but Karen Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman give back big time by serving on the CMA and ACM boards. They always show up for the meetings and give big effort during the meetings.
Not to be overshadowed by just Marvel characters, this year the Game of Thrones characters were the hot outfits. I cannot assign these characters though. I do not watch the show and I might easily assign one of our favorite country music performers the character of a murdering wildlings.
The convention also includes scores of other TV shows, like Bones, Castle, the Big Bang Theory and True Blood. Can you imagine, Taylor Swift and Tim McGraw on Bones, Maggie Rose as Penny, Hunter Hayes as Leonard and Brett Eldridge as Sheldon?
Anyhow, anyone wanna go to San Diego next summer with me?

Kenny Chesney To Break From Touring

Kenny Chesney fans won’t be seeing the country entertainer on the road in 2014. Chesney, who is currently in the middle of his No Shoes Nation Tour, has plans to take next year off to focus on the follow-up project to Life On A Rock, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The forthcoming album will be the singer’s 17th studio album.
Chesney, who is known for his relentless touring, previously took a year off from the road in 2010.
“I love touring more than anyone in the world,” Chesney says. “I love the band, the crew, the whole team — and it’s weird to not be looking at next year’s stage design, but I shouldn’t make albums to service the tour. So I’m going to put the music first, dial it back and do the strangest thing in the world: not hit the road next summer.”
The “When I See This Bar” singer recently sold the 1 millionth ticket for his No Shoes Nation Tour.

Keith Urban will return to the judge’s chair for a second season of American Idol. Fox entertainment chief Kevin Reilly confirmed that Keith Urban is returning for Season 13 of the singing competition at a Television Critics Association session in Beverly Hills today.
The season 12 judge will have some new company at the table this fall since Randy Jackson, Mariah Carey, and Nicki Minaj all departed the show after last season. Idol producers are reportedly in talks with Jennifer Lopez, Idol alum Jennifer Hudson, and Black Eyed Peas member Will.i.am to helm the table for the latest round of the long-running competition. Tryouts for the show are currently being held around the country.

In other TV news, Nashville’s second season should get even steamier with the addition of another love interest for Connie Britton’s character Rayna, TVLine.com reports. Rules of Engagement’s Oliver Hudson will join the cast as the roguish, outgoing label exec who has eyes for Rayna when her album sales soar following her near-fatal auto accident with longtime love Deacon. Hudson is the son of actress Goldie Hawn and brother of actress Kate Hudson. The Music City drama returns to ABC Sept. 25.

CMT Building Sells For $11.2 Million

cmtCommerce Street Nashville Partnership, has acquired the building that houses the Country Music Television headquarters, located at 330 Commerce Street. The location has sold for $11.2 million, according to The Tennessean. The four-story building boasts 114,038 square feet.
The building went on the market in January 2013; CMT renewed its lease on 86,000 square feet of space for an additional seven years. The network invested more than $20 million in the space over the past 10 years. The seller of the building is the Atlanta-based Wells Real Estate Funds, which paid nearly $13.8 million for the location in 2007.

Also housed in the building is the Tennessee Information Consortium, which leases more than 11,000 square feet.

Financials Report: Sony To Reject IPO Proposal, Spotify Revenues Increase

sony corporation logo1Sony Corp. is set to reject an initial public stock offering proposal for its entertainment unit by hedge fund Third Point, according to a report by Japanese news outlet Nikkei. Nikkei first reported the rejection plans, after which shares of Sony Corp. to drop by approximately 3 percent. According to Bloomberg, a Sony Corp. spokesperson has said Sony’s board and management will continue to review the proposal.
Third Point possesses 6.9 percent of Sony Corp.’s shares. The company proposed to sell a maximum of 20 percent of Sony’s music, film and television divisions to the public in an initial public offering.
The music division reported a 13.3 percent revenue increase of $1.13 billion in the second quarter, according to Billboard. There was also a 48.1 percent operating income of $109 million. Due to a weak yen, however, the division’s sales were “essentially flat,” compared to 2012’s second quarter.

spotifySpotify reported approximately $578 million in revenue last year, according to the New York Times. That marks a 128 percent increase from 2011, according to a filing from Spotify’s Luxembourg holding company. However, the company also lost $78 million last year, up from $60 in 2011.
The company offers millions of songs for free and through monthly $10 subscriptions, thus eliminating ads and offering features not available to users who do not pay for a subscription. Spotify is now in 28 markets worldwide; in March the company reported it had 24 million active users (including a quarter of them being paying customers).
