Joanna Mosca – "I Guess That Says It All"

Album Cover-Let_It_All_Begin
“Congratulations on the best stuff you’ve done! Love each and every song on EP, and “I Guess That Says it All” is a can’t miss hit! – Kip Jervis, WEZJ-FM 104.3 EZ Country
“The best yet from an amazingly talented singer.  Proof that concrete and asphalt can deliver a great country song just as much as dirt roads and gravel. Joanna is big city sophistication with country class.” Mike Thomas, KWRE/KFAV Radio
This singer/songwriter, musician, actress, mother, daughter and wife, Joanna Mosca, brings a wealth of life experiences to her dynamic current EP, Let It All Begin.  The six-track outing offers a fresh sound to Country radio and its audience, presenting Mosca’s immediately identifiable voice on relevant, well-written songs that should appeal to listeners both youthful and mature.  The EP, produced by Grammy award-winning Country star Bryan White, includes Joanna’s current single, the poignant ballad “I Guess That Says It All,” written by White, Travis Thibodaux and Steve Williams.  For White, working with Mosca was a great experience.  “She is an absolute delight and a total professional in the studio.  She definitely has the goods.”  In addition to her new single, the EP contains a masterful duet with one of Country’s most-heralded vocalists, LONESTAR’S Richie McDonald.  The “country as dirt” “Where Does Good Love Go” is as sultry and seductive as a steamy summer night under the magnolias.  For McDonald, working with Mosca was “refreshing.”  “She is so talented and has such a warm personality,” he recalls.  “She was a dream to collaborate with.”
Let It All Begin caught the attention of the Country Music Association, and Joanna was invited to the 2013 Country Music Festival where she absolutely wowed the crowds. The two songs that resonated most with audiences were “I Guess That Says It All” and her previous single/video, “Dream On Savannah.”  The clip has garnered nearly 200,000 YouTube views to date, but it’s the number of emails that Joanna’s received regarding her Music Fest performances of the song that’s touched her heart.  “I’ve received so many messages, especially from young girls who heard me sing it in Nashville,” Mosca states.  “The lyric does have a powerful, anti-bullying message – and for fans to reach out and tell me that those words touched them in some way is truly gratifying for me as a vocalist.”
Mosca jump-started her music career with the release of three consecutive Top Ten FMQB AC Radio Chart singles between 2006 and 2008.  She was also writing songs, and in 2010 she released her first full-length album, Joanna Mosca, which contained six original tunes.  The album’s first single “Keep On Going” shot onto the Billboard Top 30 AC Chart, and the song’s success earned her a spot on Music Connection magazine’s Top 100 Independent recording artists’ list. More recently, she’s had two Music Row charting singles and was named to the CMA’s “Who New To Watch” list in 2012.

Garth Brooks’ granddaughter, Karalynn

Garth Brooks is now a grandfather. Brooks welcomed his first grandchild when his middle daughter August Brooks gave birth to daughter, Karalynn, on Tuesday (July 23).
“Our family would first like to thank everyone for their warm wishes and sweet celebration of Baby K’s arrival,” said Brooks in a statement. “Our children’s lives have always been extremely private and they have been endlessly encouraged to be their own people. We have always wanted them to be individuals and NOT be known as ‘someone’s daughters’. I have been amazed and grateful how the press has always respected this. I now ask that respect to please continue as this young family begins the greatest days of their lives.”
Brooks has three daughters, including Taylor Mayne Pearl, August Anna, and Allie Colleen.

‘MusicRow’ No. 1 Song

Tyler Farr

Tyler Farr

Tyler Farr’s “Redneck Crazy” proves that sanity doesn’t always sell, earning the No. 1 spot on MusicRow’s CountryBreakoutTM Chart.
Written by Josh Kear, Chris Tompkins and Mark Irwin, the emotional single turns convention on its head, depicting a man whose woman leaves him for someone else. The music video adds extra country to the song, featuring appearances by Colt Ford, Lee Brice and Duck Dynasty’s Willie Robertson.
MusicRow’s Robert K. Oermann reviewed the single, writing, “It’s a gripping little record. He sings with fevered, raspy emotion, and the creepy, quasi-stalking lyric is kinda scary in its obsessiveness. Well worth your spins.”
Farr’s debut album Redneck Crazy will be released in the fall of 2013.

– Austin Daniels, KFTX-FM, Corpus Christi, Texas
“The DASH” sits at 2nd most requested week after week. This one song is affecting and changing people and ONLY Branch & Dean have the talent and charisma to do that. Don’t waste another minute of your own Dash before you add this powerful song.”
– Ted Cramer, Program Director, WIFE FM Rushville, Indiana

– Jim Quinton, Chief Operator/Program WPPL-FM, Blue Ridge, Georgia
“The Dash is one of those songs that will make you stop and think about just how precious life is and  also how short it can be. When I hear it on the air it makes me want to be the best person that I can be during my time on earth.”
– Cole Younger Music Director WOKA Douglas GA
“Every listen of Branch & Dean’s song “The Dash” not only makes me reflect on my life but inspires me to be a better person. When it’s done, it makes me want to hear it again. Sounds like all the ingredients to a great song if you ask me.”
– Ryan McCall   Host of The Afternoon Drive with Ryan McCall WGLR-FM Lancaster, Wisconsin
“What a powerful performance. It’s one thing for an artist to feel a connection to the music, but to make everyone else in the room feel those same emotions is really something special. I cried the first time I heard the song, and I couldn’t help but get choked up again when they performed in the studio. The song is so moving, and it has a message that everyone can relate to. I think we can all recall a time when we were reminded of just how short our time on earth really is, and they’ve captured that emotion in a really beautiful way that makes us all reflect on that feeling.”

Charlie Cook On Air: Chasing The Youth

Charlie Cook

Charlie Cook

Last week I wrote about the popularity of country music in PPM markets. It seems like each month there are eye-popping results in market after market.
I like to write information based on a snapshot of the radio chart. I am writing this on Monday, July 22, 2013, so there may be some adjustments to the Mediabase chart by the time you read this. But today on the weighted chart I am looking at, Kip Moore is No. 1. The Band Perry is No. 2 and Hunter Hayes is No. 4, followed by Randy Houser at No. 5. Brett Eldredge is No. 8. Half of the Top 10 are acts that were not regularly on the Country Chart just a couple of months ago. Going a bit deeper I see Tyler Farr, Florida Georgia Line and Lee Brice.
This composition looks more like the CHR chart, with new acts breathing new life into the format. The difference is  the country performers will likely be around in five years. I doubt you will say that about Daft Punk, Imagine Dragons, Zedd or (hopefully) Miley Cyrus. The last year has seen a blossoming in the younger demographic listening to country radio. That clouds the outlook, because some programmers could end up chasing this group and forget about the core of the format.
I have written about attending the Kenny Chesney show in D.C., Brad Paisley in Pittsburgh, the CMA Fest in Nashville and Jason Aldean in Boston in the last six weeks or so. Just looking at those crowds would lead you to believe the format is solidly 20-25 years old.
For those of you around during the Disco phase of music, who attended clubs each weekend, probably thought Disco was going to be a huge radio format. Those people are now selling insurance. What I don’t know is how these younger fans feel about the catalogues of these artists. I wonder if Kenny Chesney fans feel the same way about “You Had Me From Hello,” which was played on stations from Albany, N.Y. to York, Pa. last week, that they feel about “Pirate Flag.”
I chose a Top 5 market from Friday, July 19, 2013 and looked at a few hours on the station.
6 a.m.: Three songs from 2013, three from 2012, one from 1992, one from 2002 and four from 2005-2011. Four of the songs were identified as current.
11 a.m.: 6 current. 5 recurrent. 4 gold (2002-2009)
4 p.m.: 6 Current. 4 Recurrent. 5 Gold (2006-2010)
Then I looked at four individual stations, including KKGO, WMZQ, WUSN and WNSH. Go Country averages 2007 and is 50/50 Current-Recurrent/Gold. WMZQ averages 2009 and is 65/35. WNSH is 65/35 and averages 2008, while WUSN is 70/30 and averages 2009. The amount of music also plays a role. In the 7 a.m. hour KKGO plays 14 songs, WMZQ-10, WNSH-8 and WUSN-9.
For the heck of it I thought I would look at the other main formats. Top 40 station KIIS: 80/20 and averages 2010; KRBE: 80/20 and averages 2010; WBBM: 95/5 and averages 2011; and WHTZ: 85/15 and averages 2010. HOT AC stations—KBIG: 50/50 and averages 2008; KLLC: 70/30 with average of 2012; WPLJ: 60/40 with an average of 2008 and WTMX: 70/30 and an average of 2010. No use looking at Mainstream AC as we know they play only two or three currents an hour and some go back to the 70s.
Country stations are not all that different from Hot AC or Top 40 in balance and average. The country music format has become so much a current-based format that we stand to lose any connection to artists like Garth Brooks and Alan Jackson. There are only a handful of songs from as far back as 1991.
That is 22 years ago, but someone who is 45-years-old today was 23-years-old in 1991. Is the belief that these folks were not country music fans in their twenties? That may be true in some markets, but not in cities like Jackson, Miss., Shreveport, La., or even in Dallas. I chose one of the stations I work with, WJLS, and looked at the audience balance. I looked at the age spread (see image below). WJLS is the number one station in Beckley with a 21 share.
percentages1

Radio station WJLS snapshot

I am not saying the young audience is not a huge reason for the format’s success but we need to keep the total audience in mind and not get lost in concert crowds.
