Loretta Lynn Tribute Album Takes Shape

September 2, 2010/by contributor

Country music icon Loretta Lynn is about to get the full-blown tribute-album treatment. In honor of of her 50th career anniversary, a diverse group of artists has contributed tracks for the November 9 album release of Coal Miner’s Daughter: A Tribute to Loretta Lynn.

The artists, personally chosen by Lynn, include (in alphabetical order) Sheryl Crow, Steve Earle, Faith Hill, Alan Jackson, Kid Rock, Miranda Lambert, Martina McBride, Allison Moorer, Paramore, Reba, Carrie Underwood, The White Stripes, Lucinda Williams, Gretchen Wilson, and Lee Ann Womack.

“I am so happy that these singers wanted to do this record,” says Lynn. “I love ‘em all, and it was so great to hear all the different ways they did my hits,” she said, referring to how each artist recorded with their own choice of producer and musicians.  “I hope people like it as much as I do and we sell a bunch of records!!”

Additional details on the album will be announced soon.

It’s sad that Kellie Pickler isn’t part of this as she’s real country, always sounds amazing and better than everyone else covering Stand By Your Man at the Opry etc., and she loves Loretta! So many great artists to choose from for 15? tracks. Why are some pop artists though?

Chris: Loretta picked the artists who recorded on her Tribute album. So I assume the artists she picked at the ones she’s the closest with? I agree about Kellie though. I adore her and would have loved to see her name on the list.

It’s not just the artists she’s closest to. I know she has worked with Jack White of The White Stripes. How is she close to Kid Rock and Paramore? I found a letter Loretta wrote to Paramore and she said her daughter simply showed her a clip of them covering You Ain’t Woman Enough, and her 11 yr old granddaughter loves the band

It sounds like they hadn’t even met. I watched Paramore’s covers on youtube. Paramore is a pop band and Haley is a pop singer, so not surprisingly she sings You Ain’t Woman Enough like a pop singer – no country sound there. Kellie sings Loretta much better and sounds authentic (country)!

Kellie also covers You Ain’t Woman Enough at many concerts. I can only guess that Loretta hasn’t heard her amazing country classic covers. She has covered quite a few classics and nails them all with her authentic real country voice. Concert reviewers praised her covers of You Ain’t Woman Enough and other classics. I believe Kellie covers country classics more often and better than any other artist today. She has also covered at least 3 of the artists that recorded tracks for this album and nailed their songs (Reba, Martina, and Sheryl Crow (“Picture” duet with Kid Rock). Every time I hear about Kellie covering another country classic, I rush to youtube to hear it because she’s that good.

I’m surprised a country queen picked any pop singers for this project. Loretta defines real country so I’d rather hear all country artists on her tribute album! And Kellie is perfect for it so somehow she was overlooked.

A few articles about Kellie and Loretta

Pickler was up next. Dressed in form-fitting black, her hair blond again and sporting a neckline that plunged into the front row, the singer told the crowd that one of her great delights was getting to meet and share a stage with Loretta Lynn.

“I’m a big sucker for the classics,” Pickler asserted and straightaway proceeded to demonstrate that point by belting out Lynn’s truculent “You Ain’t Woman Enough.” Her finale was her new single, “Makin’ Me Fall in Love Again.”

She gave a good read to Lynn’s “You Ain’t Woman Enough” and matched the breathiness of Wynette’s “Stand By Your Man,” even giving the latter a strong sound in its finale.

I’m shocked that Loretta excluded Patty Loveless from the record, that was the very first artist I thought of. What a bummer. None of these artists are artists I really like, aside from LAW. I’ll have to pass on this one.
