MusicRow Acquisition Returns Robertson To The Row

Sherod Robertson, who spent years in the music business at Arista Records (during the ’90s), will soon add “MusicRow owner” to his repertoire. SouthComm, the parent company of Music Row Communications, discovered a perfect opportunity to capitalize on MusicRow’s growth by selling the industry trade to Robertson, SouthComm’s current CFO.

“I am very excited to be working with David Ross who has created a stellar music industry publication,” said Robertson. “And while many Chicken Littles think the sky is falling in the music industry, all it takes is one look at the CMA Awards last week, to know that the voice of country music is as strong as ever. Granted, there are and will be many changes in our industry’s future, but I am excited about the role MusicRow will help play in that evolution.”

David Ross will continue in his position as MusicRow Publisher and Sherod Robertson will serve as President of MusicRow Enterprises LLC plus continue his post as CFO of SouthComm.

MusicRow, now entering its 30th year was founded by Ross in 1981. It was acquired by Southcomm Communications, LLC in 2008. Written for people in the music business, it employs a strategic mix of print and digital information streams to ensure its readers get the information they need in the fastest and most convenient manner.

SouthComm Communications is headed by CEO Chris Ferrell. Founded in 2007, its current roster of publications includes City Paper, Nashville Scene, Her, Nashville Post and more…

Aaron Tippin is now preparing to head overseas for his ninth consecutive year of entertaining our nation’s troops and families stationed away from home. First, he will perform in a Thanksgiving show in Iraq. He then returns to the States only to make a quick turnaround for his very first visit to Japan, where he will deliver a Christmas performance in Okinawa for the United States Marine Corps at Camp Hansen.

Aaron Tippin

“I know it’s customary to spend time with my wife, Thea, and the kids, and sometimes, it’s hard to go. But to share my gratitude (and the heartfelt thankfulness of our family) with the men and women serving our country, that’s an absolute honor and a gift in itself–to perform for them during the holidays, a time when they miss being home the most. I can bring a little piece of ‘home’ to them,” Tippin added.

On Veterans’ Day, Tippin joined the staffers of Southwest Airlines at the Operation Freedom Bird program. Each year, Operation Freedom Bird selects a group of 50 veterans who take a journey to see the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. Tippin made a special stop in Phoenix, AZ—the program’s origin—to pay tribute to the veterans with an acoustic performance.

SPIN ZONE
Rascal Flatts’ “Why Wait” earns the CountryBreakout No. 1 song for a second consecutive week, despite losing a handful of spins. Reba’s “Turn On The Radio” moves up to No. 2 ahead of former No. 1 The Band Perry’s “If I Die Young.” Brad Paisley’s “Anything Like Me” holds at No. 4, and Keith Urban’s “Put You In A Song” races for the top, moving 8-5.

Paisley’s Top 5 positioning brings up an interesting scenario. “Anything Like Me” is still showing positive spin gains at this point, so it’s conceivable that it could earn a No. 1 honor soon. But earlier in the week, Arista rush-released a version Paisley’s “This Is Country Music”—which he played on the CMA Awards—to country radio due to overwhelming demand. It didn’t have quite enough time to impact this chart, but expect it to be added and in rotation next week.

Jason Aldean has a similar predicament. “My Kinda Party” is now Top 10, and showing continued growth. But programmers have quickly latched on to “Don’t You Wanna Stay,” the duet Aldean performed with Kelly Clarkson at the CMA Awards. That song debuted at No. 77 this week, so look to see it lifting off over the next few charts.

Other tunes debuting are Sugarland’s “Little Miss” at No. 63, Katie Armiger’s “Best Song Ever” at No. 65, and Chris Filer’s “John Deere, John 3:16” at No. 80.
