UMPG’s Cyndi Forman Honored With Belmont’s 2018 Music City Milestone Award

Cyndi Forman, Vice President of Creative for Universal Music Publishing Group, is the latest recipient of the Music City Milestone Award from Belmont University’s Mike Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business and industry partner ASCAP. The MCMA celebrates Belmont’s connection with Music Row while recognizing a Belmont graduate who has achieved truly superlative success in the entertainment and music industries early in their career.

Along with publishing executives and friends in attendance, Atlantic Records recording artist Hunter Hayes surprised Forman at the event in her honor. Forman is credited with signing and developing Hayes.

“At the ceremony honoring Cyndi Forman our dean, Doug Howard, and I noticed that everyone who spoke in tribute to her not only commented on her success but how she did it,” said Curb College Instructor of Music Business Dan Keen. “Every speaker praised her for the love and grace that she showers on the songwriters and colleagues with whom she works. As Doug Howard said, ‘Cyndi is a perfect example of what we strive for at Belmont University.’”

“I am so grateful to have been honored by my alma mater, Belmont University, and ASCAP with the Music City Milestone Award,” said Forman. “In 20 years of being part of the Music Row community, I’ve never felt so much love and support from my peers as I have this week. This recognition means so much, and I’m proud to be in the company of past recipients who I admire and respect.”

After obtaining her Music Business degree from Belmont, Forman became creative director at Balmur Entertainment. In 2002, she joined Almo Irving Music which became part of Universal Music Publishing Group in 2003 where she assumed the role of creative director. She was promoted to senior creative director there and secured many cuts. Along with Hunter Hayes, she currently works with Ryan Hurd, Sam Ellis and Striking Matches. In 2013, she was recognized as one of Music Row’s Rising Women on The Row by MusicRow Magazine, and the Nashville Business Journal also recently recognized Forman at their annual Women in Music City Awards.

Previous Music City Milestone Award recipients include Beka Tischker, Ben Vaughn, Connie Harrington, Ashley Gorley, Rusty Gaston, LeAnn Phelan and Carla Wallace.

Josh Turner On How His Fans, Family, And Alan Jackson Influenced His New Album

Josh Turner

On Friday (Oct. 26), earthen baritone singer and “Your Man” hitmaker Josh Turner will return with his seventh full-length studio album, I Serve A Savior, a full measure of gospel classics, as well as a few newly-penned songs of faith.

The album fulfills a long-held ambition for Turner, who first hit the country charts with the self-penned spiritual “Long Black Train” in 2003. The song was certified platinum by the RIAA. Turner has regularly incorporated faith-based music on his albums, including “The Answer,” “For The Love of God,” and “Me and God,” (a collaboration with Ralph Stanley), alongside his country hits such as the Platinum-selling “Hometown Girl” from 2016.

His new project features appearances from Bobby Osborne and Sonya Isaacs, with Isaacs offering harmonies on the classics “I Saw The Light” and “How Great Thou Art.” Another cut on the album, “The River (of Happiness),” was penned by his wife, Jennifer, and their oldest son, Hampton. All four of Turner’s children–Hampton, Colby, Marion and Samuel–sing on the track.

Turner discussed the album-making process for I Serve A Savior, which includes three songs recorded live at Gaither Studios in Alexandria, Indiana. In addition to the 12-track project, Turner recorded 90-minute live performance DVD of the new faith-based collection, filmed at Gaither Studios. The DVD includes an interview of Turner with gospel legend Bill Gaither.

MusicRow: You have made it a point to incorporate songs and themes of faith throughout your career. Has a full-fledged gospel album been on your bucket list for some time?

Yeah, my fans have been asking about one and my answer to them has always been, “It’s been on my list of things to do.” It’s something that is near and dear to my heart and I am very pleased and excited with how this project has come together and the fact that it’s finally here.

How did the song “The River (Of Happiness)” come about?

Hampton had been playing something on the mandolin, and Jennifer asked him what it was. He said it was something he made up, but she told him that’s actually how you write a song – to kind of make something up and start putting it together.

Jennifer asked him “When you play that, what do you see?” And he said, “I see a river.” She asked him to describe it, and Hampton called it a happy river. They ended up collaborating on it and writing “The River (of Happiness).” I thought it turned out really well.

What memories do these songs bring back for you?

Songs like “Great is Thy Faithfulness,” “How Great Thou Art,” “Amazing Grace,” “Without Him,” those are all songs I grew up singing in church. “The Doxology” is also another song we sang in church every Sunday. The Hank Williams cover of “I Saw The Light,” that’s a song that I’ve always loved to play whereas “I Pray My Way Out of Trouble” is not a song that I played a lot, but it was one of the first songs I ever remember hearing in my life because of my granny’s record collection.

She had The Osborne Brothers hymns record and I remember hearing that song on there. Each and every song has its own set of memories to go along with it, but they’re all different.

What are your touring plans surrounding this album?

My touring schedule is pretty much set for the year. I don’t have a specific tour for this record, but I’ve already been out on the road telling people about this project, playing the title track. We are already booking dates for next year.

Sonya Isaacs is on two of the songs on this album. How did she come to be part of the album?

Kenny Greenberg, my producer, really wanted me to be involved in the background vocal process, and he wanted to get my ideas on each and every song. There were a couple of songs, “I Saw the Light” and “How Great Thou Art,” that I felt could use a featured female vocal, and the first person I thought of was Sonya Isaacs. I felt like she would be a perfect fit. So, I asked her, and she said yes. She did an incredible job on both of these songs. I’m honored to have her on this project.

Are there certain Christian music albums, or Christian albums by country artists, that really made an impact on you growing up, and why?

My granny’s record collection had everyone – Roy Acuff, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Ernest Tubb, and The Stanley Brothers. Most of her record collection was gospel oriented. The whole gospel element has always been a part of country music, so I don’t think there is one specific album that I can think of from my childhood.

If I had to pick my favorite gospel record from a country artist, it would be Alan Jackson’s Precious Memories. I felt it came from an honest and innocent place, because he was doing this record for his momma. That record has always spoken to me because those songs were done like they would’ve been done in my church growing up, but with Alan Jackson’s voice. There was nothing in that record that distracted you from what the songs were really about. I’ve always thought that it was really well done.

Ben Dickey Leads New Dualtone Americana Imprint SexHawkeBlack Records

Ben Dickey

Ethan Hawke, Charlie Sexton and Louis Black have teamed up to launch a distinctive new boutique record label, SexHawkeBlack Records. The Austin, TX-based label will operate as an imprint of the celebrated Nashville-based music company Dualtone, and will be helmed by label president and another Austin-based industry veteran, Erika Pinktipps.

“All of us at SexHawkeBlack feel like we struck it rich with the Dualtone partnership. From our first conversations, it was obvious we both had the same mission: to celebrate music at its best, and to seek out and champion unheralded artists at the top of their game,” said Ethan Hawke, co-founder of SexHawkeBlack. “Dualtone’s integrity speaks for itself and we’re proud to be branch on their tree.”

Scott Robinson, CEO of Dualtone, an Entertainment One company, said “We’ve been exploring an imprint scenario for years but couldn’t develop the right creative opportunity. SexHawkeBlack (Ethan Hawke, Louis Black, and Charlie Sexton) is the perfect team and we are looking forward to launching and building SexHawkeBlack/Dualtone.”

The first artist to be officially signed to SexHawkeBlack is Ben Dickey, the gifted singer/songwriter and acclaimed star of the new independent film BLAZE, in which he stars as legendary country music artist Blaze Foley. Dickey has already garnered enthusiastic press attention for his exceptional performance in BLAZE – he won the Sundance Film Festival’s U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Achievement in Acting – as well as for his own outstanding songwriting and folk-blues-rock-infused live performances. His highly-anticipated full-length debut studio album for SexHawkeBlack Records entitled A Glimmer On The Outskirts will be released in Spring 2019.

“After we finished the film BLAZE, I thought it was important for Ben Dickey to step forward with his own music. Much the same way BLAZE introduced Blaze Foley’s music to a wider audience — Charlie, Louis and I hope to introduce Ben Dickey’s music to fans near and far,” remarked Hawke. “The experience of making BLAZE was so powerful for Charlie, Louis and me, and SexHawkeBlack hopes to continue our shared passion of celebrating music.”

The concept of SexHawkeBlack developed over several years of casual jokes and conversations in recording studios until it became a reality in 2018. Last March, knowing they would be in town for the SXSW premiere of BLAZE, recording time had been booked at Austin’s legendary Arlyn Studios. The recording sessions, produced by Charlie Sexton who also mixed, led the band, and played guitar on the album, were relaxed and the atmosphere friendly, creative and collaborative. During the sessions, Hawke and Black visited the studio. Black is also an executive producer of BLAZE and is the co-founder of both SXSW and the The Austin Chronicle. The threesome was equally enthralled by Dickey’s music and eager to find a collaborative way to share their love for what they were hearing.

“Ethan and I were recording some songs for the Boyhood soundtrack and I was well aware of Ethan’s love of music over the years. Once the recording session began it was clear just how deep that love ran in his blood as a fan as well as a writer,” recalled Sexton. “During that session, he turned to me and with sincere heartfelt excitement said, ‘We should have a band or something – we can call it Sexhawke.’ This conversation continued over the next few years, and eventually with the addition of Louis Black, who is equally obsessed with all things music, film, and art, we arrived at SexHawkeBlack Records.”

“Now it all seems pre-destined,” noted Black, “Not only was the film a blessed and special project, but it has ended up leading to exciting projects that none of us would have predicted. In many ways I think Blaze is guiding this work, which means we can’t be stopped.” Black continued, “First a film, then Dickey’s album and now SexHawkeBlack. Onward through the fog!”
