In anticipation of the upcoming 16-hour Country Music documentary from Ken Burns, which will premiere in fall 2019 on PBS, the Ryman Auditorium will present “Country Music: Live at the Ryman, a Concert Celebrating The Film By Ken Burns.” The concert will take place Wednesday, March 27.
Burns will host the evening, which will be filled with performances from Dierks Bentley, Rosanne Cash, Rodney Crowell, Rhiannon Giddens, Vince Gill, Brenda Lee, Kathy Mattea, Ketch Secor of Old Crow Medicine Show, Ricky Skaggs, Marty Stuart, Asleep at the Wheel, Holly Williams and Dwight Yoakam. “Country Music: Live at the Ryman” will be recorded for broadcast on PBS at a later date. In addition to live performances, the event will show select clips from the film, and be produced by Opry Entertainment, PBS and Florentine Films.
“In country music we found a love for storytelling that translates everyday experiences into universal truths that we can all identify with,” Burns said. “We’re very excited to share this film with the country, in towns large and small, from one coast to the other. But we are most excited to share it in those areas that gave birth to this most American of art forms. Bringing our film to Ryman Auditorium, the Mother Church of Country Music, and a character itself in our film, is a dream for us.”
The Country Music documentary was directed by Burns and produced by Burns, Dayton Duncan and Julie Dunfey. The three filmmakers spent eight years researching and producing the project, conducting interviews with more than 100 people, including 40 members of the Country Music Hall of Fame (17 of those interviewed have since passed on). Among those storytellers are historian Bill Malone and a wide range of country artists such as Marty Stuart, Rosanne Cash, Vince Gill, Reba McEntire, Merle Haggard, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Dwight Yoakam, Emmylou Harris, Kris Kristofferson, Naomi and Wynonna Judd, as well as studio musicians, record producers and others. The film uses more than 3,200 photographs and over two hours of archival footage, including rare and never-before-seen photos and footage of Jimmie Rodgers, Johnny Cash and others.
“Ken Burns and his team shine a bright spotlight on the remarkable people, places, songs and stories that make country music so powerful and inspirational,” shares Sally Williams, Senior Vice President of Programming and Artist Relations for Opry Entertainment and General Manager of the Grand Ole Opry. “The Grand Ole Opry and Ryman Auditorium have been central to those stories for nearly a century, so it’s only fitting to celebrate the film at the Mother Church. On March 27, we’ll welcome Ken and some of the biggest stars in country music for a once-in-a-lifetime night of stories and songs.”
“PBS and our local stations are pulling out all the stops to make Ken Burns’ Country Music the big event for the fall season,” said Perry Simon. “We are thrilled to kick off this effort with a bus tour through TN and to partner with Opry Entertainment and Florentine Films, Ken’s company, to produce this wonderful concert and make it available to people throughout the country on PBS later this year.”
Tickets to “Country Music: Live at the Ryman, a Concert Celebrating the Film by Ken Burns” will go on sale Feb. 8 at 10 a.m. CT via ticketmaster.com, ryman.com or by phone at 800-745-3000.

Cage The Elephant To Release New Album In April
/by Jessica NicholsonRock band Cage The Elephant has announced their upcoming album, Social Cues, will release April 19 via RCA Records.
The album, the band’s first since 2015’s Tell Me I’m Pretty, is produced by John Hill. The project was recorded in several studios, among them Nashville’s Sound Emporium, Battle Tapes Recording, and Blackbird Studio.
The band also released the album’s first single, “Ready To Let Go,” with the video directed by Cage The Elephant lead singer Matt Shultz.
“When I’m creating, I try to put myself in a reactive state of improvisational thought,” Schultz says. “I let images just arise in my mind and wait for it to evoke an emotional response and then when it does, I know I’m on to something. I was watching a lot of Fassbinder films, like World on a Wire and The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant. I was thinking about their beauty coupled with the graphic surrealism of Aronofsky.”

Charley Pride Offers Special Screening Of ‘American Masters’ PBS Special
/by LB CantrellCountry Music Hall of Fame member Charley Pride offered a special premiere screening of his upcoming PBS, American Masters – Charley Pride: I’m Just Me, on Wednesday night (Jan. 30) at Belmont University. Billy Yates, Dickey Lee, Shane Owens, Tanya Tucker, Sylvia, J.D. Shelburne, Jimmie Allen and many more were present to get a first look at the documentary that’s due out Friday, Feb. 22.
The man of the hour was in attendance at the premiere, and he joined esteemed music journalist Robert K. Oermann, the Country Music Hall of Fame’s Peter Cooper, and the film’s Director and Executive Producer Barbara Hall for a Q&A panel after the screening.
American Masters – Charley Pride: I’m Just Me traces Pride’s journey, from his humble beginnings as a sharecropper’s son on a cotton farm in segregated Mississippi to his career as a Negro League baseball player and his meteoric rise as a trailblazing country music superstar. Pride arrived in Nashville in 1963, while the city was in the thick of civil rights demonstrations and racial violence. But with boldness, perseverance and undeniable musical talent, he managed to grow his career into a legacy of hit singles, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a place in the Country Music Hall of Fame.
The film features original interviews with country music stars, including Garth Brooks, Dolly Parton, Brad Paisley, Darius Rucker and Marty Stuart, as well as on-camera conversations between Pride and special guests, including Rozene Pride (his wife of 61 years), Willie Nelson and fellow musicians.
“At a time when African-American singers were more notable for R&B hits, Charley Pride followed his passion for country music, overcoming obstacles through determination and raw talent to make a lasting impact on the genre and create a legacy that continues today,” said Michael Kantor, executive producer of American Masters. “We are honored to share the inspiring, and largely untold, story of this barrier-breaking performer with viewers nationwide.”
American Masters was launched in 1986 on PBS, and has earned 28 Emmy Awards, 13 Peabodys, an Oscar, three Grammys, two Producers Guild Awards, and many other honors.
American Masters – Charley Pride: I’m Just Me will air Friday, Feb. 22 at 9 p.m. on PBS (check local listings) and will stream Saturday, Feb. 23 via pbs.org/americanmasters and PBS apps.
