Chris Lane had plenty to celebrate with a pair of recent Nashville events. On Jan. 23, he brought his headlining Big, Big Plans tour to Nashville’s Marathon Music Works. On Tuesday (Jan. 28), he welcomed revelers to celebrate his second No. 1 hit, “I Don’t Know About You.”
ASCAP and BMI hosted the party, held at the quirky, vibrant and newly-opened hotel The Graduate Nashville. ASCAP’s Evyn Mustoe and BMI’s MaryAnn Keen hosted the shindig.
Lane was surprised with another accolade during the No. 1 party, a plaque commemorating the RIAA Platinum certification for “I Don’t Know About You.” The honor also marks Lane’s second Platinum-certified song.
“I Don’t Know About You” was co-written by songwriting kingpen Ashley Gorley (ASCAP) and is his 44th No. 1 song, though he now has 47 No. 1 songs to date.
“He’s been to more No. 1 parties this year than I’ve been to church,” said “I Don’t Know About You” co-writer Michael Hardy.
In addition to Gorley and the BMI-aligned Hardy, other writers on the song include the ASCAP-aligned writers Jameson Rodgers and Hunter Phelps, who both cemented their very first No. 1 song with the track.
Phelps moved to Nashville in 2012, and is published by Gorley’s Tape Room Music.
Rodgers is signed to Combustion Music as a writer and with River House/Columbia as an artist. One of his most recent cuts is “Born Here, Live Here, Die Here,” the title track for superstar Luke Bryan’s upcoming project.
“I Don’t Know About You” is the latest hit from Michael Hardy (who goes by HARDY on his albums). He co-wrote Morgan Wallen’s “Up Down” and Blake Shelton’s “God’s Country,” and is signed with Relative Music Group for publishing. He released his debut EP via Big Loud Records/Tree Vibez in 2018, and more recently released his Hixtape Vol. 1 collection of collaborations with artists such as Thomas Rhett and Keith Urban.
Among the celebrants were Combustion Music’s Chris Farren, Relative Music Group’s Dennis Matkosky, Round Hill Music’s Mark Brown, Big Loud’s Seth England, Warner Chappell’s Ryan Beuschel, and Tape Room Music’s Blain Rhodes.
“This one was just really fun. I’m thankful Blain and the team picked Big Loud and Seth to go to for this song. We have a great relationship with them and they always come through. We trust their ears and their systems on songs like this,” Gorley said.
Gorley also thanked the Big Loud promo team for sticking with the song, which took 52 weeks to reach No. 1.
“This one was special. Hunter and I were talking and the song was in the ‘danger zone,’ the 36 or 37 on the chart. I said, ‘I feel like this song is either going to die soon or it’s going to be a No. 1 record.’ He was like, ‘I’d prefer one of those a lot over the other.’ I said, ‘Well, I can’t tell you [which will happen], but it depends on the tenacity of the team.’ And you guys came through,” Gorley said.
“I think this was the first time Ashley was on time for a write,” Phelps quipped. “I usually show up a bit later, but he was on time that day so I was in a hurry to get there, and I actually ended up getting pulled over on the way to write this song. I got a nice little ticket, so I want to start by thanking Chris Lane for taking care of that ticket for me.
“Thank you to Seth England for believing in songs we send over his way,” Phelps added. “Joey Moi ,I’ve been a fan of you before I even knew it. I listened to Nickelback, the ‘Animals’ record like 5,000 times when I was 16 year old. Chris, thank you for recording this song. I thank God for this…I prayed for this one and this is the best day of my life.”
Hardy, Phelps and Rodgers have been friends for several years, and all three are also co-writers on the recent Florida Georgia Line song “Talk You Out Of It.”
Hardy said, “I don’t know if y’all know how tight the three of us are as buddies. There seriously was a time when…this was a pipe dream for us. It is really surreal that this is here and it’s something to be really grateful for, especially when you get to do it with some of your best friends.”
“You dream about writing your first No. 1 song and stand on stage like this, but the best part, like Michael said, is writing it with some of your best friends,” Rodgers said.
Addressing Lane, Rodgers said, “It’s inspiring watching you do your thing on stage. You crushed it the other night at Marathon. Thank you for giving me a hit song to play in my show as well. Thank you for the opportunity and I’m grateful to be standing here.”
“Thank you to all the songwriters who wrote a smash of a song and allowed me to sing it,” Lane said. “This song has changed my life and changed my career in so many ways. Thank you for believing in me, when any of y’all could have cut it and made it a hit. This was a big one for me, so thank you, I love you guys.”

Symphonic Enters Physical Distribution Market With AMPED Deal
/by Jessica NicholsonSymphonic Distribution has entered the physical distribution market via a partnership with AMPED. The partnership will offer clients physical distribution of vinyl, CDs, and cassettes in North America and beyond.
Symphonic’s physical distribution operation is helmed by Kevin Hopper, the longtime veteran of TVT Records, The Orchard, and Rykodisc, and Nick Gordon, a veteran of Caroline Distribution and The Orchard.
The two were previously responsible for building The Orchard’s physical distribution offering out of the ashes of TVT, and are no strangers to adding physical services to a digital-native company. Symphonic’s physical distribution veterans also include Randall Foster (Naxos), Michael Burrows (Caroline, Universal), and Jakub Alexander (Ghostly).
“Offering physical distribution is a natural extension of Symphonic’s comprehensive digital music and video distribution offering and artist services arsenal,” says Gordon, Symphonic’s Chief Client Officer. “What’s more, we’re glad to help labels get their products into stores during what has been a stressful time in the physical distribution and retail business. Indie music distribution and marketing company Symphonic Distribution was founded by Jorge Brea in 2006; the company is headquartered in Tampa, Florida, with offices in Nashville, Brooklyn and Bogota, Columbia. Symphonic has worked with label and artists including Nick Murphy, deadmau5, Daddy Yankee, Rowdy Records, Ozuna and more.
Lilly Hiatt Announces New Album, Tour Dates
/by Lorie HollabaughLilly Hiatt‘s brand new album, Walking Proof, is set to release on March 27 on New West Records. The project includes some special guests, including Amanda Shires, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Luke Schneider, and Lilly’s father, legendary singer-songwriter John Hiatt. John’s appearance on “Some Kind Of Drug” marks the first time the pair have appeared together on one of her records.
The 11-song set was produced by former Cage The Elephant member Lincoln Parish, and is the followup to her breakthrough project Trinity Lane. She found inspiration for the album after some time off the road facing some difficult personal challenges and hurdles, yet coming out the other side stronger and triumphant. “When I got that little gap in my schedule, it gave me the chance to appreciate some mental stillness,” she explained. “I can be a pretty anxious person, but I found a sense of peace by deconstructing all of these interactions and emotions I’d experienced and reconfiguring them into songs. It helped me make sense of everything and learn to relax.”
Walking Proof will be available on CD, across digital platforms, and on standard black vinyl. A Limited Edition Translucent Turquoise Vinyl Pressing featuring a Black & White 12×12 insert of the cover artwork will be available at independent retailers, and a limited edition autographed by Hiatt featuring a one-of-a-kind random colored vinyl, a black and white 12×12 cover artwork insert, and a box of colored pencils is available for pre-order now via New West Records.
Hiatt has also announced initial tour dates in support of Walking Proof, which will launch April 2nd in Atlanta and visit 35 cities through July 18th including a date in Nashville April 18th at the Basement East.
BMI And The RMLC Settle Rate Dispute
/by LB CantrellIt was announced today (Jan. 30) that the Radio Music License Committee (RMLC) and BMI have reached an agreement in principle to settle their ongoing rate dispute, entering into a new multi-year deal covering the 2017-2021 period. The new license carries a rate that reflects the strength of BMI’s repertoire and its share of radio spins, which is higher than any other Performing Rights Organization.
BMI President & CEO, Mike O’Neill stated, “We’re pleased to reach an agreement with the RMLC that reflects a much more appropriate value for our affiliates’ music. While litigation is sometimes a necessary step, our preference is always to work out an amicable solution with our licensing partners while continually keeping the best interests of our songwriters top of mind. BMI looks forward to working with the RMLC to improve transparency in the marketplace and enhance the flow of information between our two organizations.”
Chair of the RMLC, Ed Atsinger stated, “We are happy that our impasse with BMI has reached an amicable conclusion. The radio industry believes strongly that songwriters should be compensated fairly, and with BMI’s support, we hope that this deal will assist others in the music licensing community in determining fair rates for everyone on both sides.”
In addition to the new agreed-upon rate, which is retroactive to 2017, the RMLC has agreed to a one-time payment to BMI for litigation fees. The new agreement also clarifies and preserves the platforms that are covered by the scope of the license and associated revenue, including over-the-air broadcasts, as well as the stations’ simulcast streaming, podcasts and HD radio.
The final deal implementing the parties’ agreement in principle in a mutually acceptable long-form agreement is subject to the Court’s full approval.
Randy Travis To Release ‘Worship And Faith’ DVD With Precious Memories Album
/by Lorie HollabaughRandy Travis is releasing a compilation of worship songs and hymns on Gaither Music Group, Precious Memories, with an accompanying DVD titled Worship & Faith, on Feb. 21.
The project was filmed in 2003 at Calvary Assembly of God in Orlando, with Travis and his band performing songs including “I’ll Fly Away,” “Three Wooden Crosses” and “Just a Closer Walk With Thee,” among other favorites. The newly re-packaged album includes songs such as “How Great Thou Art,” “Softly and Tenderly” and “The Unclouded Day,” and is available now for preorder.
The recordings will be featured as a TV special on networks including PBS, TBN, DirecTV, DISH TV, FamilyNet, The Heartland Network, and more. The Worship & Faith DVD and Precious Memories CD are exclusively distributed by Capitol Christian Distribution and Universal Music and will be available throughout general market stores and the Christian marketplace in addition to Cracker Barrel Old Country Store as well as online.
Travis has enjoyed success in the gospel realm before with his smash hit “Three Wooden Crosses” which won Song of the Year at the 2003 CMA Awards and Country Song of the Year at the 2004 Dove Awards. He has released four Gospel albums which all charted on the Billboard Country charts, with three of them also charting on the All-Genre and Christian Album Charts.

Anthem Entertainment Adds John Cantu To Marketing Team

Anthem Entertainment has added John Cantu to its team, as Manager, Corporate Marketing. Cantu is based in Nashville and will focus on marketing, sponsorships and branding for Anthem’s talent. He was previously Marketing Director for Riser House Entertainment, where he developed and executed brand and marketing strategies for the company’s roster, including Mitchell Tenpenny.

Black River Entertainment Signs Duo Pryor & Lee

Black River Entertainment has signed its first duo to the label roster, Pryor & Lee. The country duo includes former The Voice contestants Kaleb Lee and Pryor Baird, who each finished in the Top 6 on the show.
After meeting while competing (and initially collaborating) on The Voice, each pursued solo careers, with Pryor touring in support of his 2019 EP All Over Me, while Lee released the track “I Dream in Southern,” penned by Shane McAnally, Josh Osborne and Brandy Clark. Lee returned to The Voice last year to perform the track with Kelly Clarkson.
Black River Entertainment CEO Gordon Kerr said of the signing, “Even though this seems very quick, it really is not. We’ve talked about wanting a duo for a long time, we just didn’t know it was you, and now we do.”
While signing their contract, Pryor expressed his enthusiasm for the next chapter. “This is literally a dream come true…I got a guitar when I was two and a half, and I’ve dreamt of this day my whole life,” Pryor said.
Lee added, “I couldn’t be more pumped for this new project and the team behind it! I immediately knew it was something special when Pryor and I recorded music together in late 2019 but having Black River get excited just solidified my feelings.”
Pryor & Lee will hit the road for the “Country’s Back” tour beginning March 1 in Fontana, California.
ONErpm, Verge Records Announce New Nashville Headquarters
/by Jessica NicholsonONErpm and Verge Records have announced new Nashville headquarters, located at 611 Commerce Street, Ste. 3109. The newly-renovated space includes a listening room, recording studio and content studio.
ONErpm opened its Nashville office in 2015; in 2019, CEO Emmanuel Zunz appointed Mickey Jack Cones to lead Verge Records, a label that uses ONErpm’s global presence to further opportunities for its artists.
In the past 18 months, ONErpm has released music from Yelawolf, Derek Hough, Method Man, Struggle Jennings, Demun Jones, Doobie, and many others. Verge Records’ first signings will be announced in the coming months.
Sony Music Nashville, Villa 40 Sign Tyler Booth

Tyler Booth has been signed to Villa 40/Sony Music Nashville. Booth is the first artist to launch as part of an exclusive, long-term joint-venture agreement between the label group and Villa 40, which was co-founded by music industry executives including Joe Fisher, Brad Margolis and Trace Ayala.
“I’m so excited to sign with Sony Nashville/Villa 40; they plucked me out of the hills of Kentucky,” Booth said. “They told me they believed in me, loved the music I was making and felt like they wanted to be apart of my future. I’ve grown to know them like family and feel like it’s where I belong.”
The 21-year-old Booth is a native of Southeastern Kentucky, and first caught the attention of producer/writer Phil O’Donnell. Booth recently released the songs “Long Comes A Girl” and “Where The Livin’ Is.”
“On behalf of the Villa 40 team, we couldn’t be more thrilled to announce our joint venture with Sony Music Nashville,” Margolis said. “We have watched the Sony team repeatedly break genre-defining artists, and we look forward to continuing that tradition with our signing of Tyler Booth…Villa 40 was founded with the goal of developing artists across all aspects of their careers, and we know that working with the SMN team will allow us to help artists like Tyler define the next decade of country music.”

SMACK Adds Two Team Members

SMACK has welcomed two new members to its team.
Miranda Kammeyer joins as Controller, and will oversee internal accounting and financial responsibilities. Kammeyer joins from local CPA firm Jacobs Cohen, where she previously spent seven years as an accounting manager.
Jeremy Groves has joined SMACK Publishing as Creative Manager and will work with the creative team to manage writers and handle song plugging for the SMACK catalog. Groves previously spent five years with Big Loud/Maverick, as day-to-day manager for Dallas Smith, Mackenzie Porter and Mat Kearney.
SMACK’s Senior Vice President, Operations, Tiffany Young, shares, “We are excited to welcome Miranda and Jeremy onto the SMACK team. They both bring unique talent and we look forward to celebrating the successes they will help us achieve in 2020 and beyond.”
The Nashville-based company is led by hit songwriters and producers Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne.
