Willie Nelson Celebrates Paul English In Upcoming Book

Willie Nelson‘s new book, Me and Paul: Untold Tales of a Fabled Friendship, tells the tale of Paul English, Nelson’s longtime drummer, friend and bodyguard/guardian angel. The book will be available from Harper Horizon on Sept. 20.

Me and Paul: Untold Tales of a Fabled Friendship chronicles the pair’s unbreakable bond that lasted until English’s death at 87, on Feb. 11, 2020.

For 70 years, English served in a variety of roles in Nelson’s life: as the steady musical heartbeat in the band, the gun-toting bodyguard, the tour accountant, and more. The country legend first immortalized English with the song “Me & Paul.” Penned for the drummer in the early 1970s, the song became the title track for Nelson’s 1985 studio album and a fan-favorite in his live sets.

“There’s something about my friendship with Paul that reminds me of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. Tom was more civilized and Huck was wilder. Although I was plenty wild at age twenty-two, I’d have to say Paul was wilder,” Nelson recalls. “Like Tom and Huck, though, we became a team. Nothing could or would ever separate us. If someone tries to tell my story without putting Paul by my side, don’t bother reading it.”

Nelson wrote the book with Grammy-winning music journalist/biographer/author David Ritz, who collaborated with the singer-songwriter on It’s a Long Story: My Life and Me (2015) and Sister Bobbie: True Tales of the Family Band (2020).

DISClaimer Single Reviews: Miranda Lambert Keeps Us Sane On Newest Single ‘Strange’

Miranda Lambert

”Summertime, and the livin’ is easy.”

With apologies to the Gershwins and Porgy & Bess, the country stars are making that sentiment a reality with a picnic of sunshine-y sounds this week.

Leading the way is Miranda Lambert, who wins the Disc of the Day honor. The column is full of “name” attractions, so no newcomer DisCovery awardee this time around.

NICOLLE GALYON / “Boy Crazy”
Writers: Nicolle Galyon/Kelsea Ballerini/Hillary Lindsey; Producers: King Henry/Jimmy Robbins; Label: Songs & Daughters
–Sharply observed lyrics, a tart/wise vocal and a stark, spare imaginative production make this a hang-on-every-line listening experience. Co-writers Ballerini and Lindsey provide harmony support. I can’t wait for Galyon’s upcoming album debut. Based on what I’ve heard, it’s going to be an Event.

KEITH URBAN / “Brown Eyes Baby”
Writers: Will Bundy/Rodney Clawson/Josh Thompson/Morgan Wallen; Producers: Dann Huff/Keith Urban; Label: Capitol Nashville
–This casts Urban as The Comforter, here to brighten your dark day with some mid-tempo sunshine. Introduced on Thursday morning’s Today show, it goes down super smoothly.

MIRANDA LAMBERT / “Strange”
Writers: Miranda Lambert/Luke Dick/Natalie Hemby; Producers: Miranda Lambert/Luke Dick/Jon Randall; Label: RCA
–It takes a little while to take off, but once it does, it’s a dandy ride. Lambert takes a look at these crazy times and suggests a few ways to liven the mood. “Do anything to keep you sane,” she sings. Amen, sister: You’re coming in loud and clear.

JOE NICHOLS / “Good Day For Living”
Writers: Bobby Hamrick/Dave Cohen/Neil Mason; Producers: Mickey Jack Cones/Derek George; Label: Quartz Hill
–The title tune of Nichols’ new album bubbles with energy. He lit up the Opry stage with it recently, and it sure sounded fresh. Upbeat, uplifting, bright, delightfully positive and just the thing to add some zip to your playlist.

MORGAN WALLEN /”You Proof”
Writers: Ashley Gorley/Ernest Keith Smith/Morgan Wallen/Ryan Vojtesak; Producers: Joey Moi/Charlie Handsome; Label: Big Loud
–All the whiskey in the bar can’t get her off his mind. The track burbles along with droplets of cool guitar notes, finger snaps and jaunty undertow rhythm. As usual, he sings with immense personality and verve.

INGRID ANDRESS / “Pain”
Writers: Ingrid Andress/Laura Veltz/Sam Ellis; Producers: Ingrid Andress/Sam Ellis; Label: Warner
–Her vocal performance is quite range-y and accomplished. The overall vibe is pop power ballad with strings and steel.

RANDY HOUSER / “Workin’ Man”
Writers: Randy Houser/Randy Montana; Producers: Randy Houser/Blake Chancey; Label: Magnolia Music Group
–The excellent “Note To Self” remains the single, but this track from his forthcoming album with that title also contains this rousing blue-collar anthem. Houser sings it with a barn-burner baritone that dips and growls in all the right places. He’s such an amazing vocalist, and this is a classic country message.

MADDIE & TAE / “Every Night Every Morning”
Writers: Maddie Font/Taylor Kerr/Jonathan Singleton/Brock Berryhill; Producers: Derek Wells/Jimmy Robbins; Label: Mercury
–Breezy, tuneful and youthful. Giddy in love, and full of sunshine. Well worth your spins.

KIP MOORE / “Fire on Wheels”
Writers: Kip Moore/Jaren Johnston; Producers: Kip Moore/Jaren Johnston; Label: MCA
–It’s a fiery rocker that journeys through the American heartland with hoarse exhortations. Scream and dance along.

JAKE HOOT / “Had It To Lose”
Writers: Jake Hoot/Matt Warren/Matt Nolan; Producer: Danny Myrick; Label: JH
–This winner of The Voice is a commanding vocal presence on this blue-collar country rocker with an Everyman message. Potent, penetrating and ultimately relatable.

Brett Young Celebrates Multi-Platinum Milestone

Brett Young‘s smash single “In Case You Didn’t Know” has reached an impressive new milestone, becoming one of only three country songs to reach 8x Platinum status in the last five years.

Young wrote the ballad, which has remained a fan favorite since its release, alongside Trent Tomlinson and Tyler Reeve.

BMLG Records President/CEO Jimmy Harnen and Otter Creek Entertainment’s Van Haze celebrated several notable accolades with Young during his recent show at The Bluebird Café in Nashville. Young’s heartbreak anthem “Mercy” also earned 4x RIAA Platinum certification and “Like I Loved You” went double Platinum.

“’In Case You Didn’t Know’ is one of only three country singles released in the past five years to achieve RIAA 8x multi-Platinum or higher! Just three,” notes Jackie Jones, VP of Artist and Industry Relations at RIAA. “Congratulations to Brett and his Big Machine team on this incredible achievement!”

“Eight times Platinum–that’s pretty wild,” Young adds. “I could never have imagined what this song would become when we first wrote it. It’s humbling to have created something that has resonated so strongly with so many people.”

He is simultaneously climbing the charts with the reflective “You Didn’t” and the “Never Til Now” collaboration with Ashley Cooke, and is currently on the road performing his streak of hits.

Dan Tyminski To Honor Bluegrass Great Tony Rice On New EP

14x Grammy award-winning guitarist and singer Dan Tyminski has announced his very own Tony Rice tribute EP, One More Time Before You Go: A Tribute To Tony Rice, to be released on July 22.

Tyminski, who like much of the bluegrass world was heavily influenced by the work of Rice, was devastated by Rice’s passing in late 2020. Upon hearing the news, he took to writing a song for Rice as a way to relieve some of his grief, which ended up being the title track of this upcoming five-song project.

One More Time Before You Go: A Tribute To Tony Rice features a number of fellow Rice devotees and friends, including Molly Tuttle, Billy Strings, Gaven Largent, Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Todd Phillips, Dailey & Vincent, and more.

Ahead of the EP’s release, Tyminski has shared a taste of the upcoming star-studded tribute with his recording of “Church Street Blues,” featuring Tuttle. Sticking closely to Rice’s classic arrangement, the pair cross-pick their way through the tune, trading solos and sharing vocals on the song’s chorus.

Tyminski is slated to play at Bluegrass Nights at The Ryman tonight (June 30). He will also be making his way around the country later this summer through November. For a full list of upcoming dates, click here.

One More Time Before You Go: A Tribute To Tony Rice Track List:
Church Street Blues (feat. Molly Tuttle)
One More Time Before You Go (feat. Jerry Douglas, Todd Phillips, Sam Bush, Josh Williams)
Ten Degrees And Getting Colder (feat. Dailey & Vincent)
Where The Soul Of A Man Never Dies (feat. Billy Strings)
Why You Been Gone So Long (feat. Gaven Largent)
