Universal Music Group Nashville artists Eric Church, Lauren Alaina, Priscilla Block, Jon Pardi, and Parker McCollum performed at the annual Team UMG at the Ryman luncheon for CRS virtual attendees today (Feb. 18).
EVP Promotion UMG Nashville Royce Risser served as the host for the showcase, and kicked everything off with UMG Nashville Chairman/CEO Mike Dungan by his side. Before Dungan could introduce the first act, Risser surprised him with a loud blast of fireworks going off behind the two executives. This prank proved to be a favorite of Risser’s, as he gave every UMG Promotion staff member who appeared throughout the stream the same fright.
Once Dungan recovered, he introduced recent UMG Nashville signee, Priscilla Block. Block first gained recognition last year on TikTok thanks to her catchy original songs like the humorous “PMS” and the body-positivity anthem “Thick Thighs.” Her “Just About Over You” reached the top spot on the iTunes all-genre song chart within 12 hours of release, and is currently climbing country radio’s Top 40. “Believe me, no one is more skeptical of the TikTok thing than me,” Dungan said. “She is the real deal.”
Block got the music started with “My Bar,” live from the Ryman Auditorium. “I’m freaking out to be here at the Ryman,” she said.

Priscilla Block
The charismatic and thankful Block then sang her viral hit “Just About Over You.”
Sr. VP, Promotion, MCA Nashville, Katie Dean then appeared, and after being scared by the fireworks, she introduced Parker McCollum. McCollum started CRS week strong by winning MusicRow‘s Breakout Artist of the Year at the publication’s virtual CountryBreakout Awards.

Parker McCollum
McCollum thanked country radio right out of the gate for his first Gold, Platinum, and No. 1 song, “Pretty Heart,” before performing the tune on the Ryman stage. McCollum then played his newest single, “To Be Loved By You.” The driving heartbreak song, which he cowrote with Rhett Akins, was most added at country radio upon its debut earlier in the year.
Next Mercury Nashville VP, Promotion Damon Moberly introduced Lauren Alaina.
Alaina played some tunes from her 2020 Getting Over Him EP, starting with the piano ballad, “What Do You Think Of.” Beautifully sung as usual, Alaina’s recorded version features pop vocalist Lukas Graham.
She then played her hot and heavy duet, “Getting Over Him,” with label-mate Jon Pardi.

Lauren Alaina
VP, Promotion, Capitol Records Nashville, Bobby Young appeared to introduce the next act. Capitol Records Nashville won Label of the Year at MusicRow‘s CountryBreakout Awards earlier this week for the 16th consecutive year (17th overall). Young was on hand to re-introduce Jon Pardi.
“It’s good to see you on whatever you’re watching this thing on,” Pardi said before launching into his mariachi-infused “Tequila Little Time.” The tune is Pardi’s latest single, and follows his Platinum-certified No. 1, “Heartache Medication.” Pardi’s next selection was a tune from his surprise 2020 album, Rancho Fiesta Sessions, the Sinéad O’Connor hit “Nothing Compares 2 U,” which he recorded because he was inspired by Prince’s version of the song.

Jon Pardi
VP, Promotion, EMI Nashville, Jimmy Rector joined Risser next. Impressively, he didn’t flinch at the fireworks. He introduced the reigning CMA Entertainer of the Year, Eric Church.
Church said he was impressed by Rector not flinching at the fireworks. “You should probably check your hearing or your alcohol consumption, either one,” he said.
Church started his acoustic set by talking about his upcoming three-album project, Heart & Soul, due out in April. The first tune he played, “Heart On Fire,” is on the Heart project. It was the first song recorded on the 28-day retreat where he created the album. He first mentioned the process at last year’s CRS.
“I’ve never dreamed a song before, but I dreamed this song,” Church said before going into the madness dreamscape, “Crazyland.” The song features characters called emotions, such as Sad, Regret, All My Fault and I Told You So, who all come together in Crazyland.

Eric Church
Before playing his current single, the romantic “Hell Of A View,” Church talked about his co-writer Casey Beathard. The hit songwriter tragically lost his son Clayton in late 2019, when the 22-year-old was killed outside of a Nashville bar. Church called Beathard “an intergral part” of his music, and said he admires his strength for coming on the writing retreat shortly after Clayton’s passing. There the two wrote “Hell Of A View,” which was most-added at country radio upon its debut and has already hit No. 1 on the MusicRow CountryBreakout Radio Chart.

Eric Church
Church closed with a song that was motivated by and dedicated to the fans at the 2017 Route 91 Las Vegas shooting. He delivers a love letter to his fans with “Through My Ray-Bans,” singing: Everybody’s got their arms around everybody else’s shoulders / Guarding against the world outside like an army of Friday night soldiers / The battle wages tomorrow but tonight you don’t give a damn / Wish you could stay the way I see you through my Ray-Bans.
Warner Music Nashville Signs Round Here Records Artist Redferrin
/by Lorie HollabaughWarner Music Nashville has partnered with Round Here Records and signed Redferrin to a major label deal. Redferrin’s debut single,“Red In My Last Name,” is available everywhere now.
Produced by Corey Crowder, Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley, “Red In My Last Name” serves as a manifesto for Redferrin’s uncompromising style, and the track’s adrenaline-pumping energy and rebellious swagger offer a sample of the kaleidoscopic musical textures he can create.
Born Blake Redferrin, the White House, Tennessee native has been making a name for himself as one of Nashville’s most unorthodox and innovative new singer-songwriters. He already boasts cuts including Florida Georgia Line’s hip-hop inspired “Countryside,” Nelly’s recent smash “Lil Bit,” and Dean Brody and The Reklaws’ “I Can’t Help Myself,” which hit No. 1 in Canada and set a record for the most one-week radio spins in the nation’s history. Living just 30 miles north of Music City, Redferrin spent his first 24 years on the pegs of a dirt bike. He turned professional by 18 and joined the national Arenacross circuit. He later began exploring the idea of changing direction and picked up the guitar he learned to play as a teen again. Writing songs of his own was a natural progression, and he had struck up a friendship a few years earlier with another avid rider – FGL’s Tyler Hubbard. After Redferrin stopped racing, he signed a publishing deal with Hubbard and Brian Kelley’s Tree Vibez Music.

“From day one, we’ve known that huge things are ahead for Redferrin,” said Florida Georgia Line’s Kelley and Hubbard. “Whether in the writing room, studio, or on the stage, he’s completely blown us away and creatively grown faster than we could have ever imagined. In addition to being wildly talented, he’s one of the best guys you’ll meet and we can’t wait for everyone to get to know him! We’re so proud to stand in support of Redferrin with a Warner Music Nashville/Round Here Records partnership.”
“Redferrin is a truly undeniable talent and we are so lucky to have him join our Warner Music Nashville family,” said Warner Music Nashville Chairman & CEO John Esposito. “We are so fired up to introduce him to the world. Every song is a hit and there’s no doubt in my mind that he will be the next superstar in country music and beyond!”
“I am so fired up,” exclaimed Redferrin. “It’s been a long time coming and a long backroad to get here. I want to thank BK and Tyler, John Esposito and Cris Lacy, Leslie Dipiero, and so many others for believing in me and my music. Your support and hard work means the world to me. I can’t believe we’re really doing this and can’t wait to see where this ride takes us.”

DISClaimer Single Reviews: Ryan Hurd & Maren Morris, Taylor Swift, Walker Hayes
/by Robert K OermannMaren Morris and Ryan Hurd, Photo: Harper Smith
This seems to be a day for group harmonies and vocal collaborations.
Darlinghurst, Track45, Jesse & Noah and the Dirt Band comprise our duo/group entries. The last named is collaborating with The War & Treaty, Steve Earle, Rosanne Cash and Jason Isbell. Our other collabs include The Bellamys with John Anderson, and Ryan Hurd with Maren Morris.
The DisCovery Award belongs to Track45. Ryan Hurd & Maren Morris ride off with the Disc of the Day.
ROBYN OTTOLINI / “F-150”
Writers: Robyn Ottolini/Erik Fintelman/Mark Schroor; Producers: Erik Fintelman/Mark Schroor; Label: Warner Music Nashville
— She’s doing fine getting over him until she sees a certain brand of truck and remembers. Her vocal delivery has lots of emotional resonance, even if the lyric is somewhat monotonous. I hope she’s getting a kickback from the Ford Motor Company.
WALKER HAYES / “I Hope You Miss Me”
Writers: Walker Hayes/Shane McAnally/Sam Summer/Nick Ruth/Sean Smalls; Producers: Shane McAnally/Walker Hayes/Nash Overstreet; Label: Monument Records
— His compressed vocal is ear catching, as are all the little details in the verses. The layered production also scores points for creativity. Poppy and catchy.
TAYLOR SWIFT / “Love Story (Taylor’s Version)”
Writer: Taylor Swift; Producers: Christopher Rowe/Taylor Swift; Label: Republic
— Billed as “Taylor’s Version,” this remake of her chart-topping 2008 smash has a ear-tickling crispness and nice ebb-and-flow audio dynamics. Needless to say, it’s still a cool little song.
TRACK45 / “Met Me Now”
Writers: Ben Johnson/KK Johnson/Jenna Johnson/Jonny Price/J Har; Producer: Byron Gallimore/Track45; Label: Stoney Creek Records/BBR Music Group
— I’m in. This is fresh and youthful sounding. The female lead singer is charming, but the track really takes off when the whole trio harmonizes. The punchy percussion scores points, too.
RYAN HURD & MAREN MORRIS / “Chasing After You”
Writers: Brinley Addington/Jerry Flowers; Producers: Teddy Reimer/Aaron Eshuis; Label: Arista Nashville
— I love a good duet, and this certainly is one. The ballad manages to be both powerfully romantic and emotionally complex, and the couple sings the fire out of it.
NITTY GRITTY DIRT BAND & FRIENDS / “The Times They Are A-Changin’”
Writer: Bob Dylan; Producer: Ray Kennedy; Label: none listed;
— Go to nittygritty.com or Bandcamp to consume this and donate to Feeding America. It’s worth the visit. The classic, 57-year-old song remains as pertinent and timely as ever. The band’s compatriots taking turns on the verses are Jason Isbell, Rosanne Cash, Steve Earle and The War and Treaty. The audio result is simply thrilling. Applause, applause.
RORY FEEK / “The Times They Are A-Changin’”
Writer: Bob Dylan; Producers: Ben Isaacs/Matt Johnson; Label: Gaither Music Group
— In this unexpected and unlikely entry of “Who Wore It Best?” Rory Feek comes out stronger than you might expect. His production is a gorgeous, moody pastiche of acoustic instrumentation, chorale support and stately, meditative rhythm. His folkie, earnest, emotional delivery is right on the money, too. Stirring and stunning.
BRETT ELDREDGE / “Good Day”
Writers: Daniel Tashian/Ian Fitchuk/Brett Eldredge; Producers: Daniel Tashian/Ian Fitchuk; Label: Warner Music Nashville
— He’s such a wonderfully hearty vocalist. I love the uplifting outlook in these lyrics. The weather might be gloomy and the times might be troubled, but nevertheless he greets the day with a positive attitude. Well done, as usual. An emotional bullseye.
TYLER RICH / “Better Than You’re Used To”
Writers: Alysa Vanderheym/Corey Crowder/Tyler Rich; Producer: Alysa Vanderheym; Label: The Valory Music Co.
— Your current boyfriend is no good, and Mr. Rich is here to show you how much better things could be. I wish his fine vocal was hotter in the mix, because the production fights for attention rather than being supportive.
THE BELLAMY BROTHERS & JOHN ANDERSON / “No Country Music for Old Men”
Writer: David Bellamy; Producer: none listed; Label: none listed
— Lilting and nostalgic, the song fondly recalls the days of Hank, Lefty, Patsy, Buck, Dolly, Merle, Loretta & Conway, Jones & Wynette, Cash and more. A rippling rhythm track soaked with steel floats you along while everyone sings with gusto and affection. A dandy disc.
JESSE & NOAH / “The Vision”
Writers: Jesse D. Bellamy/Noah Frank Bellamy; Producer: none listed; Label: Usonia
— Very cowboy. It has an open-spaces, spaghetti-western vibe, with lots of echoey electric-guitar work. They are David’s sons—Uncle Howard Bellamy adds a third harmony part.
DARLINGHURST / “Gotta Go Rodeo”
Writers: none listed; Producer: none listed; Label: Helium Records
— I am told that this male-female country quartet is a big deal in Australia. This sprightly tune has rhythm to spare. The lead vocals overly dominate, to the point that you can barely hear the harmonies. The background crowd cheering is meant to make the song sound “exciting.” It does nothing for me.

Sammy Sadler Signs With BFD/Audium Nashville
/by Sarah SkatesSammy Sadler
Sammy Sadler has signed with Bob Frank Distribution (BFD)/Audium Nashville and is gearing up to release his cover of “Church On The Cumberland Road” featuring Shenandoah’s Marty Raybon on March 5. Sadler has tapped other artist friends for an album of songs that were hits in 1989, the year he survived being shot on Music Row.
“I’m so excited to return to BFD/Audium Nashville with Bob Frank and Chuck Rhodes to release my new album for the world to hear,” said Sadler. “This is the music I grew up on and what I believe is some of the greatest music that was produced and made. To be able to record with some of the original artists of that era is an honor and very humbling. They are true legends.”
The singer was wounded during a shooting that left one other person dead. Since then he has continued to release music with albums including 2004’s Hard On A Heart on the Tri Label, 2009’s Heart Shaped Like Texas on Audium Records, followed by projects on Koch Records and E1.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Nashville Postponed To Fall
/by Lorie HollabaughThe Rock ‘n’ Roll Nashville Marathon, originally scheduled for April 24-25, has been postponed until later this fall due to concerns around the pandemic.
A statement from organizers states the Rock ‘n’ Roll Nashville “cannot take place as originally scheduled on April 24-25 in the interest of both our participants and host community’s health and well-being. Based on Rock ‘n’ Roll Nashville utilizing Nissan Stadium as a key venue for the event, the new fall 2021 race date is dependent on the Tennessee Titans home schedule and will be confirmed after the NFL schedule is available. The event team will continue to work to develop operational plans in a manner consistent with local community objectives and within the guidelines set by public health entities relating to COVID-19. The Rock ‘n’ Roll Safe Return to Running guidelines will be updated as policies are refined and registered participants will receive an email with more information.
Dolly Parton Declines Proposed Tennessee State Capitol Statue
/by LB CantrellDolly Parton. Photo: Rob Hoffman
Dolly Parton has declined a bill proposed by the Tennessee legislature to erect a statue of the country music icon on the Capitol grounds.
The bill was filed by Rep. John Windle, D-Livingston on Jan. 13 and would have required the State Capitol Commission to erect the statue facing the Ryman Auditorium.
In a statement provided to MusicRow by Parton’s publicist, the Country Music Hall of Fame member thanked Tennessee legislature for the consideration but declined because she doesn’t want to be put on a pedestal right now “given all that is going on in the world.”
