Both the Harlem Globetrotters and the Grand Ole Opry are celebrating their 85th birthdays, so the Harlem Globetrotters joined Charlie Daniels for a surprise collaboration on October 19th. Harlem Globetrotter ballhandling wizard Scooter Christensen helps country legend Charlie Daniels spin a basketball on the tip of his fiddle bow during a performance of Daniels’ signature “The Devil Went Down To Georgia” onstage at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry.

Flatts Wrap Tour Leg; Apple Debuts New Goodies

The first leg of the Rascal Flatts tour ended a week ago in Irvine, California closing out 2010 with 650,000 fans and 56 shows. In addition to the current “Nothing Like This” tour the numbers were also added to from the “Unstoppable” tour which took place in the early months of 2010.

“Nothing Like This” showcases the last ten years of hits for the trio and will continue in 2011 with special guests Chris Young and Luke Bryan. “Their easy rapport on stage- and Gary LeVox’s voice- makes it so great to see this band live,” shared the Palm Beach Post.

For the remainder of 2010 Rascal Flatts will promote its Nov. 16 album release on Big Machine Records—Nothing Like This— and new single “Why Wait.” They are also set to appear on the CMA Awards (11/10) and the American Country Awards on 12/6.

MacBook Air Laptop

Apple this morning announced a series of new products and software. The Cupertino-based shop now accounts for one in five PCs sold in the US. In addition to unveiling sleek new ultralight MacBook Air laptops, the next generation operating system OS X Lion was also announced with an availability date of summer 2011. A Mac App Store will go live in 90 days. Significant for social networking and possible artist/fan relationships is a giant expansion of Facetime, the video conferencing app that became available for iOS4 recently (iPhone and iPodTouch). Facetime for OS X is now available in beta format. On Monday (10/18) Apple announced its earnings. Net revenue surged almost 70% over the same quarter last year.

Paisley Renames Winter Run: H2O Frozen Over

Brad Paisley’s H2O World Tour stopped in Gulf Shores, AL last week, drawing over 35,000 fans for the free show that was part of “Concerts for the Coast” series to restore tourism to the region. Paisley’s outing continues through Nov. 20 with Justin Moore and Darius Rucker as special guests.

Gearing up for the winter leg of the tour, Paisley has renamed the run the H2O Frozen Over Tour. It kicks off in the frozen tundra of Green Bay, WI on January 20. Rucker will continue as special guest and Jerrod Niemann will join the outing. The show stops February 26 at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena.

The H2O Tour began at the end of May and in less than five months has played to over 750,000 fans, including 70,000 at AquaPalooza, and 51,000 at Gillette Stadium.

Underwood Wows Nashville Audience

Carrie Underwood, reining ACM Entertainer of the Year, brought her Play On tour to Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena (10/13). For nearly two hours she seranaded the packed house with hits from past and present including her current single “Mama’s Song” from her CMA Album of the Year nominated CD, Play On.

Blake Shelton Makes First Stop on Headlining Tour

Blake Shelton’s first-ever headlining tour made the first stop at the Ogden Theatre in Denver, Colorado yesterday (10/13). The All About Tonight Tour will continue through October along the West Coast.

“To go out and know that the crowd is there for you – every night,” Shelton says, “that is one heck of a feeling. The best part, I get to see my fans in cities I haven’t performed in for a while.”

Already this year, Shelton has been nominated for four CMA Awards, received an invitation to join the Grand Ole Opry, and made another career-first with the announcement of his Greatest Hits album, LOADED: The Best of Blake Shelton, available November 9.

Roots Radio Hit By Lightning

Nashville’s weekly roots/Americana radio show, Music City Roots: Live From The Loveless Cafe, will mark its first anniversary with a new partnership. The progressive music, 2-hour radio broadcast will now be heard Wednesdays 7-9 on Lightning 100 (WRLT-FM)d beginning with the Oct. 20 show. Each show is also streamed live via www.livestream.com using a multi-camera HD platform.

“We’re very excited about our new association with Music City Roots,” said Lightning 100 General Manager Fred Buc. “Nashville is fortunate to be one of the few cities in the U.S. where you can always hear quality music and learn about new artists and styles. The addition of Music City Roots: Live from the Loveless Cafe is a natural fit in our menu of diverse specialty programming, and at the same time, will expand Lightning 100’s brand and musical mission.”

John Walker, co-creator and co-producer of Music City Roots says of the new Lightning 100 relationship: “We’re thrilled to partner with a local station with such a great history of independence and forward-thinking. We’re also truly excited as Music City Roots begins to expand its national and international vision.”

The show’s new airwave home will come with several changes. Emcee Eddie Stubbs will depart and veteran announcer Keith Bilbrey will fill his slot. Bilbrey will be joined each week by musical host Jim Lauderdale and journalist/interviewer Craig Havighurst.

The Nashville Scene recently named the Loveless Barn and the show as Nashville’s Best New Roots Music Venue, “akin to what the Opry must have been like 60 years ago.” AOL’s country music blog The Boot declared it a “must-see” experience.

Tootsies Turns 50

Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge will celebrate its 50th Anniversary with a special tribute show at the Ryman Auditorium on Nov. 7. Named for its original owner Hattie Louise “Tootsie” Bess, the Broadway honky tonk with access across the alley from the Ryman, has a colorful history as a popular hangout where Opry performers could jam between shows and catch a beer or two.

The Ryman tribute will include performances by Randy Houser, Terri Clark, Mel Tillis, Mark Chesnutt, The Grascals, Ronnie McDowell and newcomer Joanna Smith, with a special presentation by Grand Ole Opry legend, Little Jimmy Dickens. Tillis and Clark will co-host the evening with Kris Kristofferson, who is also scheduled to perform.

“Like Kris, all these artists have a history with Tootsie’s,” commented Steve Smith, Toosie’s current owner. “Spanning the decades, each has stories and special memories to share,” Smith added, “and their music is a part of Tootsie’s history. Industry Gains Leiper’s Fork Venue

The barn loft can accommodate up to 75 guests for a seated dinner and up to 125 guests for less formal mixers, while the venue itself can accommodate groups of 250 plus.

Southall Eden located in the artsy Leiper’s Fork community about 30 minutes from Music Row will soon have a new venue for music industry events. “Everyone knows and loves Puckett’s and Green’s Grocery,” says owner Shannon O’Kelley. “But there is a demand for a venue with a larger capacity. Paisley To Offer “Hits Alive”

Brad Paisley is busy selling out shows on his H2O World Tour, and soon fans will be able to take home a piece of the action. Paisley is the latest artist planning a fourth quarter release of a greatest hits packages, which will include tracks from the studio, as well as live songs from his tour. The two-disc set, Hits Alive, is due from Arista Nashville on Nov. 2.

Paisley’s successful H2O World Tour presented by Chevy just wrapped a Canadian run of four sold-out shows and topped it off in Grand Forks, ND over the weekend with another sold-out night. The popular “Water World Stage” with Easton Corbin, Steel Magnolia and Josh Thompson finished its run on the tour a couple of weeks ago, but not before each act was pranked by Paisley and crew. Darius Rucker and Justin Moore will continue with the tour as special guests. Dates are scheduled through Nov. 20, including this weekend’s Concert For The Coast in Gulf Shores, Ala. to bring economic relief to the region. Jackson Plans Aussie Tour

Tickets for Alan Jackson’s first Australian tour sold out just hours after being posted online Friday morning, October 8. The tour originally spanned four dates—Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane (2)—but after an overwhelming show of support, a third Brisbane show has been scheduled for March 12th. Those tickets are set to go on sale October 14th. Jackson’s tour is the fastest selling country show or tour in Australian country music history.

“We’re looking at what may be the fastest selling country show or tour in Australian country music history,” said Rob Potts, CEO of Rob Potts Entertainment Edge and co-promoter of the tour. “The excitement level for Alan Jackson’s first tour in our country just can’t be measured. The fans can’t believe he’s really coming – and ticket sales have proven just how excited they are.”

As a successful, respected songwriter/performer, Alan Jackson is a 16-time CMA, a 16-time ACM, and a Grammy award winner.  He has sold more than 50 million albums and has 34 #1 hit singles. Jackson will release 34 Number-Ones on November 22 of this year.  The double disc collection will feature 37 songs consisting of his 34 hit singles, two rare additional tracks and his collaboration with the Zac Brown Band “As She’s Walking Away.”
