Live Nation Financials Show Signs of Stability

Concert promotion giant Live Nation released its financial results yesterday (Nov. 3) for the end of Q3, and the figures suggest some stabilization of the concert industry after a period of loss and cancellations.

“I am delighted that we continue to deliver improved financial results and are well on track to drive strong growth in profitability for the year,” said Michael Rapino, President and Chief Executive Officer of Live Nation Entertainment. “Across our portfolio this year, we have delivered growth while also improving operating margins. This is reflected in the healthy gains in free cash flow from our operations while investing in new products including festivals, re-platforming of Ticketmaster, social media and mobile apps.”

Though the statements show a small (2.5%) decline in revenue to $1.79 billion over Q3 2010, net income was up slightly to $51.7 million for the same period. Estimated total attendance of 15.6 million appeared down somewhat for Q3, though the full nine month (through Sept. 30) total of 35.6 million more closely equals last year’s figures. Operating income was up 3.6% to $111.8 million.

“We believe the stabilization of consumer demand for live events will continue into 2012 and, looking ahead, we are increasingly optimistic about our opportunities,” Rapino continued. “Given the continued fan demand for concerts and a growing supply of artists hitting the road, we are optimistic about the future growth of the global concert industry. Based on this, we believe we are well positioned to generate improved returns from our business and deliver shareholder value.”

Keith Urban To Undergo Surgery

Keith Urban is set to undergo throat surgery later this month, to remove a polyp which has developed on his vocal chords. Though the surgery is reportedly a minor, out-patient procedure, it will require complete voice rest followed by an undetermined period of recuperation. Therefore, he is postponing the ‘All For The Hall’ benefit concert which was to be held in Nashville on Jan. 18.

Urban has had to substantially scale back his appearances requiring multiple songs, but will be honoring his pre-existing one-song performance commitments leading up to his procedure at the end of this month. All other appearances will be rescheduled in the new year.

Australia Attracts Growing Number of Country Tours

Lady Antebellum joined Australia native Keith Urban on tour Down Under in 2011.

During 2011 a swarm of country stars ventured out on Australian tours for the first time. Numerous factors are driving the trend explains Jeff Walker, President of The AristoMedia Group, who spearheads many international country music initiatives.

Australia’s rural landscape is home to a significant country fan base who relate to the genre’s subject matter—the same reason tour buses have been crossing the northern border to Canada for years. Yesterday Dierks Bentley announced runs through both countries in early 2012.

Similarly, both countries also have country music television networks helping fuel the frenzy. “The concert promoters can build up a pent-up demand in those territories by use of music videos,” explains Walker. “Plus, the growing impact of social networking and its ability to engage fans worldwide helps the artists feel more confident about going over there.”

Talk about pent up demand, earlier this year Alan Jackson’s first tour Down Under sold out six dates within minutes, turning into the biggest country outing to visit Australia in 20 years.

In 2012 Tim McGraw and Faith Hill are hitting the road together for the first time in five years, in a run that will be the couple’s first Australian tour. The March tour includes a two-night residency in Brisbane and headlining the CMC Rocks the Hunter festival.

Walker notes that two-night stands are commonplace in Australia because many of the venues are smaller than their American counterparts. Festivals are also attractive to artists who want to journey to Oz. “They can go down for the festival and also play another four or five venues,” he explains. “They have a good infrastructure there. A lot of artists have to scale down their shows from what we’d see here in America, but they still have great venues, and festivals.”

Joe Nichols headlined CMC Rocks the Hunter in March 2011, and returned in May for a multi-city tour.

A favorable exchange rate is also enticing artists. “Nowadays it is a lot easier for Australian promoters to come over here and make offers to artists, because the artists can earn as much as they do in the States,” says Walker. “Plus, sometimes they’ve saturated the markets here by touring the same cities over and over. In Australia, they can take three weeks, have a mini-vacation and work at the same time.” Sounds like a win-win.

Major merch sales are another big plus, thanks to the untapped market. Carrie Underwood made her first tour of Australia when she was promoting the international release of Play On: Deluxe Edition.

Among others who performed in Australia in 2011 are native Keith Urban, Lady Antebellum, and Montgomery Gentry. Taylor Swift’s world tour stops there in March.

“You can build a career by going back and back and back,” sums Walker. “Because artists like Don Williams, Charley Pride, Tom T. Hall, Dolly Parton, and Kenny Rogers have fostered that fan base, they are able to book successful international tours every two or three years.”

Sugarland Wraps Tour With Spectacular Hometown Show

A montage of color and energy lights the stage.

Story and photos by Ellen Barnes

Sugarland rocked the house at the jam-packed Philips Arena in Atlanta on Saturday, Oct. 22, reinforcing their reputation as energetic, dynamic and passionate performers. Being the last stop on the band’s Incredible Machine Tour, and the hometown of Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush, the city has a soft spot in the band’s heart. “Let’s get it going, Hotlanta,” yelled Nettles after opening with “All We Are” from the newest album, The Incredible Machine.

Nettles and Bush dominated a very large stage set with special effects focusing on multi-colored lights throughout the performance. The stage backdrop was a hybrid of artwork from the group’s two most recent albums, combining the well-known winged heart from Love on the Inside, with the engine and machine-inspired Steampunk vibe of their latest project.

Nettles shined in a simple yet true-to-character all-black outfit, accented by a sheer sparkly vest and bold necklace.

The duo made a fine display of their newest album, playing hits such as “Tonight,” “Stuck Like Glue,” and “Incredible Machine,” during which Bush rocked a near-minute-long solo on his sizzling red electric guitar.

The band made sure to intertwine older hits along with new material, not forgetting favorites such as “Baby Girl” and “Something More,” from first album, Twice the Speed of Life. Before playing “Something More,” Nettles proclaimed to the audience, “People tell us we’re so lucky to be able to go on the road and play our own music for a living. I look at all your smilin’ homecoming faces and I say you’re damn right.”

An emotional Nettles performs "Stay."

Other hits included “Settlin’,” a harmonized rendition of “Who Says You Can’t Go Home,” and a heartfelt “Stay,” during which Nettles’s face was tear-streaked, reminiscent of the song’s music video. Her emotion was contagious, causing the audience to sway while sentimentally singing along. It is clear why Nettles is beloved by fans for her sense of realness and humanity, especially while performing.

The group spiced up the performance by sprinkling in snippets of cover songs, including a rock version of Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline” into “Find the Beat.” There was a unique take on “Everyday America,” with Nettles splicing in Cee Lo Green’s “Forget You,” Britney Spears’ “Hit Me Baby One More Time,” Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5,” and Detiny’s Child’s “Bootylicious.” Adding to the entertainment was four men dressed as each of these artists and dancing onstage with the band.

Opening act Sara Bareilles returned to the stage dressed like Bush, amusing the crowd with her imitation. Other pranks included popcorn raining down on the keyboardist as Nettles introduced him—Nettles laughed, declaring, “This show will go down in infamy.”

Sugarland’s energy radiated throughout the entire show, with Bush constantly running and skipping back and forth to opposite ends of the stage, and even sitting down on speakers inches away from the audience. Nettles and Bush make a dynamic performing duo, sharing a charming live chemistry whether dancing, playfully fighting or laughing at one another.

Among the evening’s highlights was the band’s emphasis on audience interaction. After playing “Baby Girl,” Nettles asked, “Do you like surprises? ‘Cause it’s a good one.” Bush added, “Somebody needs a new guitar,” causing uproar in the stands. Bush hopped off stage and walked through the audience while holding one of his acoustic guitars high above his head. The lucky recipient was a young boy near the back who was wide-eyed with shock and gratitude.

Another special moment was during the song “Little Miss.” Prior to the concert each audience member was given a sign reading the lyrics “I’ll be alright again, I’m ok” to hold up during the song as part of the “Little Miss Project.” Later, while Nettles was singing, the lights shown on the crowd and thousands of the signs were displayed in the air. Nettles was truly touched, calling it a “wonderful surprise.”

For the encore, fans watched as Nettles spray-painted “LOVE” onto a flag and then passed it around the audience while she and Bush sang “Stand Up.” Many people were waving their own smaller “LOVE” flags as well. The group ended with their rendition of Dexys Midnight Runners’ “Come on Eileen,” with Bareilles returning to the stage. It was a fitting close, representing Sugarland’s embrace of musical diversity, talent and fan love.

Fans hold up signs during the Little Miss project.

Dierks Bentley hosted his sixth annual “Miles & Music for Kids” in Nashville on Sunday (10/16) and raised $205,000 for the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. The motorcycle caravan started in Columbia and rode to Nashville for a concert featuring Bentley and friends Eli Young Band, Charles Kelley, Colt Ford, Kevin Fowler, Josh Thompson, Craig Campbell, and Sarah Silva.

Over the series’ six-year history, Bentley has raised over $2 million for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. In 2009, Bentley joined forces with Nationwide Insurance, CMT One Country and the Children’s Miracle Network to expand the successful “Miles & Music for Kids.” The event was first held in Nashville and has expanded across the country visiting Phoenix, Dallas-Fort Worth, Seattle, Atlanta, Columbus and Chicago.

Bentley’s current single, “Home,” is quickly climbing MusicRow’s CountryBreakout Chart, and is at No. 26 in only its third week.
