The Lumineers’ New Album ‘III’ Coming In September

Dualtone’s The Lumineers will release their upcoming album, III, on Sept. 13. The album will release via Dualtone in the U.S., and via Decca Records for the rest of the world.

The album’s concept began while the band was writing in the Catskill Mountains, where producer Simone Felice works. The album is presented in three chapters, with each one centering on one main character from a fictitious family known as the Sparks, who span three generations in the album’s storyline. The band has released “Gloria,” the first single from the upcoming album.

Written by the two founding members, Wesley Schultz and multi-instrumentalist Jeremiah Fraites, the album sees violinist/vocalist Lauren Jacobson officially joining the band. Her playing can be heard on the band’s previous two albums. She joins the touring lineup that includes pianist Stelth Ulvang, bassist/backing vocalist Byron Isaacs and multi-instrumentalist Brandon Miller. (After eight years, cellist/vocalist Neyla Pekarek left the group in 2018 to embark on a solo career.)

The Lumineers’ 2012 debut album included the hit “Ho Hey” and was certified triple Platinum by the RIAA in 2018. Their 2016 album Cleopatra has been certified Platinum and debuted at No. 1 on the Top 200 in 2016. The band has notched 18 No. 1 hits on Triple A, Alternative and other radio charts, including the Triple A 13-week No. 1 hit “Ophelia.”

This year, the band plans to tour across the U.S. and Europe, including their biggest ever UK shows at The O2 Arena London, Manchester Arena, The SSE Hydro Glasgow, and dates across Europe including 3Arena Dublin, Le Zénith Paris and Verti Music Hall Berlin, following a string of festival dates that include Hangout, Bonnaroo, Outside Lands, Woodstock and more.

USC Annenberg Study: No Country For Female Artists

Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative issued a research brief examining the inclusion among male and female artists in country music. The brief investigates the age and gender of artists across the Year-End Billboard Hot Country charts from 2014-2018. Songwriter gender for 200 songs was evaluated. Additionally nominations for the past five years of ACM Awards nominees were assessed in four categories.

The study found that 16% of artists across 500 top country songs from 2014 to 2018 were female. Among top performers, male artists had roughly twice as many credits as top female artists did across the sample.

Not one of the top-performing women was over the age of 40, while all but one of country’s top-performing men had reached or exceeded that age.

The study states: Women are not only disadvantaged in the country market, but their age illuminates a sell by date that their male counterparts do not experience. Looking at the 101 unique or individual artists on the charts, the mean age sample wide was 37 for males and 34 for females. Thus, career longevity is much shorter for female than male artists—a pattern also found across other entertainment platforms.

Women represented 12% of songwriters across the two years studied – one positive finding emerging from this report is that female artists were more likely to work with female songwriters than male artists were across that period. Finally, only 15% of ACM nominees in four major categories from 2015 to 2019 were female – in several years, not one woman was nominated in the Entertainer and Songwriter of the Year categories.

“While the results of this study might not be surprising, they illuminate the fact that gender and age play a role in restricting the careers of female country music artists,” Smith says. “Women—especially women over 40—are noticeably absent as top performers on the charts evaluated in this genre.”

Universal Music Group Nashville (UMGN), part of Universal Music Group, a founding partner of the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, continues its commitment to furthering diversity and inclusion in country music by examining its own data on recruitment, signing and promotion of new male and female talent.

Cindy Mabe, President of UMGN, said, “Country music has always been defined by storytelling that reflects the lives of everyday peoples’ joys and struggles. The current state of country music only provides the perspective of 50% of the population. We clearly have a problem. Our job is to amplify our artists’ voices and help them introduce their stories and connect to their audience. This has gotten increasingly harder and limiting over the last few years, especially for women and it has dramatically affected the perspective, reach and depth of our country music genre. Taking a reflective, disciplined look into our own actions can only help inform and influence our decisions going forward so that all of our artists’ voices are heard.”

Additionally, in line with the solutions presented in the brief, several groups have made commitments to work with the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative in the following ways: YouTube Music has committed to working with the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative to examine the digital popularity of country artists by gender. By doing this work, YouTube can demonstrate the role of artist gender in audience preferences within this genre. Women Nation, Live Nation’s division focused on advancing women in the live music business, has committed to examining audience demographics for country music festivals and concerts. This will provide new insights into how audiences seek out performers in country music and whether any differences exist by gender. Ali Harnell, President and Chief Strategy Officer, will oversee this effort for Women Nation.

“The work that the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative is doing is critical to identifying where the problem is. I’m eager to be a part of the solution to create equity for female artists, particularly in the country genre,” said Harnell.

Earlier this year, the Academy of Country Music initiated a Diversity & Inclusiveness Task Force – which has already met – to set specific goals with regard to evaluating voting criteria and Awards processes, increasing diversity in all Academy decision-making spaces, such as Committees, and increasing representation on the ACM Awards telecast, and more.

“The ACM Awards reflect the current state of the country music industry, and our nationally-televised show amplifies that reflection. The Academy exists to grow and strengthen the genre, and a diverse and inclusive organization and industry will inevitably further those objectives. We are all in this together,” said Pete Fisher, CEO of the Academy.

Committing to these analyses signals an openness by these companies to being key leaders for inclusion in country music. According to Dr. Smith, “The Annenberg Inclusion Initiative is calling on other labels and industry partners—especially those in radio—to undertake similar analyses in their own businesses. With a rigorous investigation of what data tell us about audience preferences and behaviors, it is possible to confront antiquated beliefs about what consumers want to create an environment where great music by male and female artists thrives.”

DISClaimer: Jordan Davis Sings It Loud And Clear

All stars, no waiting.

With Blake, Strait, Kane, Luke and Thomas Rhett all in the mix, today’s column is loaded with headliners. So loaded, in fact, that there was no room for any newcomers. Hence, no DisCovery Award.

And as it happens, the Disc of the Day doesn’t belong to any of the superstars. It goes to up-and-comer Jordan Davis. Sing, bro. I hear you loud and clear.

INGRID ANDRESS/More Hearts Than Mine
Writers: Ingrid Andress/Sam Ellis/Derrick Southerland; Producer: none listed; Publisher: none listed; Atlantic
– This woman has talent in spades. The single remains “Lady Like,” but check out this dynamic ballad for an extra special treat.

KANE BROWN & BECKY G/Lost In The Middle Of Nowhere
Writers: Kane Brown/Lauren Alaina Suddeth/Jon Nite/Jesse Frasure; Producer: none listed; Publishers: Universal/Warner-Chappell/Sony-ATV/Downtown, no performance rights listed; RCA
– Bopping and infectious. In fact, the bounce and the groove are so catchy, you don’t even notice that there’s not much of either a lyric or a melody. There’s a Spanish-language mix, too.

MIDLAND/Mr. Lonely
Writers: Mark Wystrach, Jess Carson, Cameron Duddy, Shane McAnally, Josh Osborne; Producer: Shane McAnally, Osborne and Dann Huff; Publisher: none listed; Big Machine
– A cool, retro-country, uptempo shuffle, complete with twang, vocal harmonies and plenty of steel. Enthusiastically recommended.

GEORGE STRAIT/God and Country Music
Writers:Luke Laird, Barry Dean and Lori McKenna; Producers: George Strait/Chuck Ainlay; Publisher: none listed; MCA Nashville
-Just one thing: God doesn’t need “saving.” God is omnipotent, that’s kind of the whole point. However, this is a very pretty country ballad.

JORDAN DAVIS/Slow Dance In A Parking Lot
Writers: Davis/Lonnie Lee Fowler; Producer: Paul DiGiovanni; Publishers: ole Red Cape/Jordan Davis/Amylase Songs N Such/Matching Cowlicks/WB, ASCAP; MCA Nashville
– The combination here is a dense, echoey, pop production with his extraordinary vocal warmth and an ultra romantic lyric. Dreamy is the result.

THOMAS RHETT/That Old Truck
Writers: Rhett Akins/Julian C. Bunetta/Ryan B. Tedder; Producer: none listed; Publishers: EMI Blackwood/Cricket on the Line/Write Me a Song, no performance rights listed; Valory
– This is a country-music smash if I’ve ever heard one. It has a summer-nostalgia vibe that is super listenable and undeniably addictive.

RUSTON KELLY/All Too Well
Writers: Taylor Swift/Liz Rose; Producer: Ruston Kelly/Jarrad K; Publisher: none listed; Rounder
-Hushed and swirly and atmospheric. Lost in the reverie of a faded romance. Utterly lovely. You need to listen to this artist. Now.

BLAKE SHELTON/God’s Country
Writers: Michael Hardy/Jordan Schmidt/Devin Dawson; Producer: Scott Hendricks; Publisher: Relative Music Group (BMI), Administered by Songs of Kobalt Music Publishing (BMI) / WB Music Corp. / Georgia Song Vibez / We-volve Music (ASCAP) / Warner-Tamerlane Publishing Corp. / Neon Cross Music (BMI); Warner Bros.
– Dark and passionate, with a Bocephus outlaw vibe. A salute to the hard-working everyday folks of Middle America. A terrific change of pace for this superstar.

SCOTTY McCREERY/In Between
Writers: McCreery/Jessi Alexander/Jonathan Singleton; Producers: Frank Rogers/Aaron Eshuis/Derek Wells; Publishers: none listed; Triple Tigers
– Very well written. As usual, he sings with aplomb. The toe-tapping rhythm is perfect for a springtime playlist.

LUKE BRYAN/Knockin’ Boots
Writers: Hillary Lindsey/Gordie Sampson/Jon Nite; Producer: none listed; Publisher: none listed; Capitol
– It is doubtless timed to become a summer radio fave and intends to beckon you to a weekend good time. Thanks, but I believe I’ll sit this one out.

Nashville Singer/Songwriter Darrin Bradbury Signs To ANTI- Records

Nashville-based artist Darrin Bradbury has signed with ANTI- Records.

“Partnering with ANTI- Records is a dream come true. Their long history of championing innovative and offbeat artists is not only awe-inspiring as a listener but humbling as a writer. Their roster speaks loudly and without reservation for itself and I am honored to have the opportunity to contribute to it,” Bradbury said.

He recently released the track “Newark,” a love letter to his hometown in New Jersey. He also has an album in the works for later this year.

““Newark” is a song I didn’t like at first. I don’t often write with so much on my sleeve; not at least without a healthy dose of cynicism and self-deprecation along with it,” Bradbury explained. “There’s an earnestness to the northeast that I tried to capture with this song; a hopefulness that persists despite inevitable odds. In short, I was homesick. So I wrote something that I felt would hit close to home.”

This month, he joins Robert Earl Keen for five shows, and also has dates on the books with The Milk Carton Kids. He has previously toured with Margo Price, Billy Joe Shaver, Wanda Jackson and more.

ANTI- Records is recording home to Wynonna, Neko Case, Tweedy, Elliott Smith and more.

Shane McAnally

Producer/songwriter/label exec Shane McAnally has signed with CAA, MusicRow has confirmed.

His production credits include work with Musgraves, Old Dominion, Midland, Sam Hunt and more. McAnally has recently spent time in Los Angeles working on the NBC music competition series Songland, which debuts May 28.

McAnally also co-leads Monument Records, which he relaunched with manager Jason Owen. He is managed by SMACK Songs and signed with Irving Azoff’s Global Music Rights in 2014.

Warner Music Nashville Promotes Lacy, Kline

Cris Lacy, Ben Kline

Warner Music Nashville has promoted Cris Lacy to Executive Vice President, A&R and Ben Kline to Executive Vice President/General Manager. Additionally, Scott Hendricks moves to the role of EVP A&R/Creative Advisor. All three positions will report to WMN Chairman & CEO John Esposito.

“I could not be prouder of the accomplishments of this label, our artists, executives and dedicated staff,” Esposito said. “Ben and Cris have played a key role in our success and empowering them further will continue to strengthen us for years to come.”

Cris Lacy ascends from SVP A&R, a position she has held since 2017, to EVP. She will lead the A&R team in seeking out and signing new artists and working with them on repertoire, while providing resources and creative support to the existing roster. She will continue to oversee the department’s day-to-day operations.

“Our artists and the stories they tell are the soul of Warner Music Nashville,” Lacy said. “I’m in awe of them, and in awe of the tireless village at this label that brings those stories to light. No one is more passionate and tireless than our leader, John Esposito, and no one has taught me more about the business of A&R than my mentor Scott Hendricks. I’m grateful to both of them for this opportunity, and with the expertise of the A&R team, I’m eager to build upon the unique and precious culture that is WMN.”

“It is widely known that Cris Lacy is revered as one of the top A&R executives in the music industry,” Esposito said. “Her passion and knowledge of and for music is equaled only by her level of humanity. She has been named to every executive list there is – and rightfully so. Her unparalleled ability to connect with artists has led to Cody Johnson, Devin Dawson, superstar Kenny Chesney and this year’s ACM New Female of the Year winner Ashley McBryde joining our roster, to name a few. If there’s an authentic artist looking for a record deal, they are talking to Cris Lacy.”

In the newly created position of EVP/General Manager, Kline will oversee WMN’s Radio & Streaming, Artist Development, Touring and International departments. “I’m incredibly lucky to work with so many talented, passionate and driven people,” said Kline, who joined the company in 2014 as VP of Revenue and elevated to SVP Global Revenue & Touring in 2017. “The strides we’ve made under Shane Tarleton’s leadership in marketing and Kristen Williams’ in radio and streaming speak to how well we are positioned in this evolving landscape. There’s no place else I want to be, and I’d like to thank Espo and our COO Matt Signore for this opportunity.”

Of Kline, Esposito said, “Ben’s leadership and in-depth knowledge of the marketplace helped drive a year of historic revenue and expand our global impact. He is respected by both the WMN staff and the industry outside of our building – and as his neighbors can attest, no one plays their music in the office louder than he does.”

In his new role as EVP A&R/Creative Advisor, Hendricks has extended his contract and will report directly to Esposito. He will continue to identify new artists and songs in addition to his celebrated work in the studio. “Scott has been instrumental in building this label and I’m excited to work with his genius as he takes on this exciting and innovative position” Esposito said.

Hendricks’s production credits include 73 No. 1 singles amongst nearly 120 Top 10 tracks from artists including Blake Shelton, Dan + Shay, Chris Janson, Michael Ray, Tegan Marie and more. Hendricks is currently in the studio producing new music for Blake Shelton and up-and-coming artist Trea Landon, who is recording his debut Warner Music Nashville project.

“The changes we are putting in place allow me to spend more time in the studio while I continue my work in A&R,” Hendricks said. “When Cris Lacy first pitched me songs 24 years ago, I knew she was special, and these past 11 years working together as teammates has been seamless. Her work ethic and passion are unmatched, and I’m so proud of all she has accomplished. She will certainly take WMN to new heights as she leads and oversees this department.”

Said Esposito, “I’ve been fortunate enough to be in the music business for many years, and now, approaching my tenth anniversary at Warner Music Nashville, I can say unequivocally these last two have been the best of my professional life. Along with our COO Matt Signore, Scott, Ben, Cris and our entire team, I am excited for the future knowing that our best days lie ahead.”
