Angel Mary and the Tennessee Werewolves – "Folsom Prison Blues"

TN-Playlist-080113-PPAs country’s newest family trio, Angel Mary and the Tennessee Werewolves (AMTW) is no-doubt offering up a rebel yell to the genre. Described by Billboard Magazine as “A rocking country act ready to turn up the volume,” and “poised to move up the ladder and the Billboard country charts,” their unique sound–a blend of old-fashioned Dixie roots, bluegrass picking, and Haggard-styled lyrics–has already commanded the attention of fellow artists, industry tastemakers, and fans alike.

Though only recently establishing themselves as a trio in November of 2011, the Hendersonville, Tennessee natives have spent years perfecting their sound in a household where music was a prevalent part of everyday life. Drawing from an eclectic mix of musical influences – everything from Johnny Cash to Lynyrd Skynyrd to Motley Crew–Angel Mary (lead vocals and guitar), Christian (vocals and drums), and Antoine (vocals and bass guitar) pay tribute to those icons, both in sound, self-described as a “chocolate chip cookie wrapped in barbed wire,” and name.
“When we were younger and between houses in Hendersonville, Johnny Cash’s sister Joann Cash opened her home to us. So Johnny has been a part of our lives from the start,” explains Angel Mary. “When it came to choosing a name for the band, we wanted to pay homage to the man that’s inspired us so greatly. Johnny started his musical career as ‘Johnny and the Tennessee Two’ and, later, ‘Johnny and the Tennessee Three’ – that’s where ‘Angel Mary and the Tennessee’ comes from. ‘Werewolves’ was inspired by Johnny’s song ‘The Beast In Me’ from his American Recordings.”
Spending much of 2012 in the studio working on material for their self-titled EP, AMTW enlisted the help of friend and fellow musician Doug Phelps (Kentucky Headhunters). “We’d invited Doug to stop in and check out what we were doing,” said Antoine. “He loved what he heard and ended up singing on track six on our EP, ‘Waiting On You’” Debut single “Cowboy” released in October 2012 to rave reviews. The music video for the single made it into TNT’s coveted top 10 video spot three weeks in a row. Shortly thereafter, AMTW released their first EP to iTunes.
No strangers to risk, the trio released their second single, a cover of Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues,”  to radio on July 30th, 2013. Veteran programmer and Country Radio Hall of Fame member Ed Salamon immediately declared, “Angel Mary and the Tennessee Werewolves have done for that song what Elvis did for Bill Monroe’s ‘Blue Moon Of Kentucky’ in Sun Studios so many years ago.” That same week, Billboard Magazine included AMTW in an article detailing the next wave of country music. “We’re taking a huge step into the unknown releasing a Johnny Cash hit…” said Angel Mary. “But Folsom Prison Blues is a song we hold close to our hearts. We’ve all had our struggles, ups and downs, and times we feel we can’t be free. But there’s always that light of forgiveness at the end of the track.”

'MusicRow' No. 1 Song

Lady Antebellum

Lady Antebellum

Lady Antebellum shines on their latest MusicRow chart-topping single, “Goodbye Town,” from the group’s fourth studio album Golden, which hit stores in May 2013.
The heart-wrenching ballad features Charles Kelley on vocals, depicting his attempts at escaping the dreary hometown evocations in the Peter Zavadil-directed music video.
“Goodbye Town” was written by band members Hillary Scott, Dave Haywood and Kelley along with Josh Kear, who has co-written many of the trio’s hits including “Need You Now.”
MusicRow’s Robert K. Oermann included the song in his summer soundtrack, noting: “Led by the heartbroken, soul-shattering voice of Charles Kelley, the trio keeps you completely in its thrall throughout this pulsing, yearning, lump-in-throat performance. Supremely well written and brilliantly produced, this is the reason these folks are the stars they are.”
We’re looking forward to even more No. 1 singles off this 2013 record!

Crash My Party, named after the album’s lead single, is produced by Jeff Stevens.
“I decided Crash My Party was perfect for this album because like the song, the album goes beyond the literal meaning of the title,” says Bryan. “The song isn’t what you think it is, it is unexpected, and I think in the same way fans will definitely hear some surprises on my new album. It still reflects my sound but you will get to hear a little bit deeper, different side to me musically as well.”
Bryan was recently named the Academy of Country Music’s Entertainer of the Year and won Vocal Event of the Year for “Only Way I Know” with Eric Church and Jason Aldean. In 2012, Bryan took home 11 awards, including nine wins at the American Country Awards, as well as his first American Music Award (for Favorite Male Country Artist).

Charlie Cook On Air: Country Takes Boston

Jason Aldean comes to Boston's Fenway Park

Jason Aldean comes to Boston’s Fenway Park

Something cool is happening in America when it comes to country music. They like it. They really like it. Garth Brooks appeared on the cover of Forbes magazine on March 2, 1992. The slug line read, “Led Zeppelin meets Roy Rogers…Country conquers Rock.”
That was validation that country music had arrived. You might remember this was a really big deal for the format. If New York accepts country music it is okay for the rest of to bask in its glow. Two things happened this year. First, country radio returned to New York and Forbes put another Country artist on its cover July 15th. And Toby Keith looks as much a businessman as a performer. Oh, and he is referred to as the 500 million dollar man.

Again, having the spotlight on the format out of New York is very important to the revenue side of the format. Anything good out of the Northeast is good for the format.
Last Friday and Saturday night, Jason Aldean rolled his Night Train Tour into Boston’s Fenway Park. Aldean, Miranda Lambert, Jake Owen and Thomas Rhett could have been elected to the city council in Boston come Sunday morning. They were well-loved for five hours on Saturday night. The electricity in the stadium Saturday (I went to the show Saturday but I’m sure Friday was just as exciting) night was like a lightning strike.
The show sold over 70,000 seats over the two shows filling the park with country music fans. In Boston. My cab driver didn’t even know there was a country music station in Boston, as he told me from the airport. To be fair, there are most likely not many country music signals in his home country, so he skipped 102.5 on his scan button.
The format has blown up this year in PPM markets. Every day we see country stations hitting record highs. We expect to see these numbers in Indianapolis, where WFMS and WLHK are No. 1 and No. 2. Indy has always been a really good country market. These two stations are in a real battle and that brings out the best in both stations.
But we don’t expect to see these kinds of numbers in Boston or Pittsburgh, for example. Kudos to Mike Brophey and Ginny Rogers at WKLB and Mark Anderson and Stoney Richards at WDSY, who have put up huge numbers.
The heat Aldean generated in Boston and Brad Paisley and Taylor Swift did in Pittsburgh has paid off. In the coming weeks we’re going to see if the excitement of these stadium and Pavilion shows in major markets will raise all boats in diary markets.
We know PPM and diary are very different animals. If PPM is a throughbred then diary is beat up donkey. Almost everything we see in diary markets can be questioned. Unless of course, my charges do well. Then you can take it to the bank. I understand Portland, Maine; Springfield and Wilmington, Del., all share in the excitement of a Fenway park show but it is not like the event is causing traffic jams in their cities.
I believe the format has the best music on the radio today. But the excitement of your team (an Aldean or Luke Bryan or Carrie Underwood) winning the super bowl is unequaled. (Not that I would know. I am a Lions fan.) Country radio programmers need to remember creating excitement about the music and the artists is what is going to make you a winner every day of the year. You have to do it between the great music otherwise you’re just Pandora.
I don’t want to leave DeeJay Silver off the kudos list. He had the crowd at Fenway at the top of their game. And when 35,000 concert goers sang along to “Sweet Caroline,” you had to get chill bumps.
