‘American Masters-Charley Pride: I’m Just Me’ Airs Tonight

Charley Pride

American Masters – Charley Pride: I’m Just Me is set to air on NPT this week beginning tonight (Nov. 5) at 8 p.m. CT and 11 p.m. CT. The show will also air Monday, Nov. 9 at 8 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 1 p.m., and on Dec. 5 at 12 a.m. and 4 a.m. CT.

The show traces Pride’s life journey from his humble beginnings as a sharecropper’s son on a cotton farm in segregated Sledge, Mississippi to his career as a Negro League baseball player and his meteoric rise as a trailblazing country superstar. The new documentary spotlights how Pride’s love for music led him from the Delta to a larger, grander world. In the 1940s, Pride grew up listening to and emulating Grand Ole Opry stars like Ernest Tubb and Roy Acuff. The singer arrived in Nashville in 1963 while the city roiled with sit-ins and racial violence. But with boldness, perseverance, and talent, he managed to achieve a legacy of hit singles, a Recording Academy “Lifetime Achievement Award” and a place in the Country Music Hall of Fame.

The film also features interviews with Garth Brooks, Dolly Parton, Brad Paisley, Darius Rucker, and Marty Stuart, and includes several on-camera conversations between Pride and special guests, including Rozene Pride (his wife of 61 years), Willie Nelson, and other fellow musicians. It also includes many of Pride’s classic hits, along with more modern cuts like “Standing In My Way,” from his latest album Music In My Heart, released in 2017.

“At a time when African-American singers were more notable for R&B hits, Charley Pride followed his passion for country music, overcoming obstacles through determination and raw talent to make a lasting impact on the genre and create a legacy that continues today,” said Michael Kantor, executive producer of American Masters. “We are honored to share the inspiring, and largely untold, story of this barrier-breaking performer with viewers nationwide.”

Kelley Purcell Appointed VP/Membership & Industry Relations At Recording Academy

Kelley Purcell has been named Vice President of Membership & Industry Relations for the Recording Academy, effective immediately.

The appointment follows the Recording Academy’s restructure, which aims to streamline the organization and sharpen focus on its service to music. Purcell will report to Chief Industry Officer Ruby Marchand, and be responsible for overseeing all aspects of membership outreach, peer review, member account services, and the Academy’s Chapter systems, including regional and local teams, Chapter events and programming, and all facets of Chapter service.

Purcell joined the Recording Academy as the Executive Director of the Los Angeles Chapter in 2013. She later transitioned to Senior Director of Member Outreach, leading industry outreach efforts across the Membership & Industry Relations department. During her tenure, she project managed a cross-department team of IT, Digital Media and Communications colleagues over a two-year period and successfully implemented historic changes to the Academy’s membership systems. She also led the recruitment efforts to diversify Academy membership and was the liaison to the Academy’s first-ever Peer Review Panel, responsible for training this body and serving as its point person.

Prior to her time at the Recording Academy, Purcell served as the executive director of Harvardwood, a global nonprofit organization for members of the Harvard University community who believe in the purpose and power of the arts. She also held past roles at Island Def Jam Music Group, Monitor Deloitte and Goldstar and received a cum laude bachelors degree in economics at Harvard University.

“We are pleased to have Kelley as our Vice President of Membership & Industry Relations,” said Marchand. “Her expertise and history of being a driving force within the Membership & Industry Relations department make her a great asset to this organization. This is yet another step towards the Academy’s transformational commitment as we strive for greater inclusivity and work to ensure our membership reflects the diverse individuals who make up our music community.”

“I’m extremely passionate about the work I’ve done at the Academy over the past seven years and I’m thrilled to continue focusing my efforts on building a diverse membership body that feels heard, supported and represented,” said Purcell. “It’s important that our members understand that they have the power to influence and shape the future of the music industry, whether that’s through advocacy efforts, voting in the Grammy Awards process, or beyond. I’m excited to take on this elevated role and build upon the work the Recording Academy has already done to ensure our members and our industry thrive.”

DISClaimer Singles Reviews: Kip Moore, Darius Rucker, Florida Georgia Line, And More

The country industry is chugging into the fall with a full slate of star releases.

For your listening pleasure today, we have offerings from Kip Moore, Darius Rucker, FGL, Miranda Lambert and Eric Church. We don’t have Dan + Shay or Lee Brice, but we do have their siblings.

The Disc of the Day belongs to Tyler Braden. I have loved everything he’s put out so far, but nothing so much as “Secret.” Play and believe.

The DisCovery Award goes to Miranda’s duet partner, Luke Dick. The guy is super gifted as a songwriter, and his personality as a record maker is also abundant.

TYLER BRADEN/“Secret”
Writers: Tyler Braden; Publisher: none listed; Producer: none listed; Label: Warner Nashville
-Alcoholism, PTSD, pregnancy, heartache and misery can’t hide in a small town, where everyone knows each others’ “secrets.” Powerfully written and sung with gut-punch authority, this is the kind of thing that makes stars out of mortals. I remain an enormous fan of this newcomer.

KIP MOORE/”Don’t Go Changing”
Writers: Blair Daly/Westin Davis/Kip Moore; Publisher: none listed; Producer: none listed; Label: Mercury Nashville
-This mid-tempo rocker looks at a crazy world and asks love to remain something stable. Moore attacks it with his trademark vocal urgency while guitars snarl. The song’s gritty video is dedicated to all the live-venue owners who are suffering right now.

KAREN WALDRUP/”I Go By Jane Doe”
Writers: Karen Waldrup/Brandon Darcy/Dean Kreseki; Publisher: none listed; Producer: none listed; Label: KW
-The lady is out for a roaring good time with a take-no-prisoners attitude. When she cuts loose, she makes sure she is among strangers. She’s anonymous, and likes it that way. So there.

BILL ANDERSON/”It’s a Good Day to Have a Good Day”
Writers: Bill Anderson; Publisher: none listed; Producer: none listed; Label: TWI
-The production is a little thin sounding, but the upbeat rhythm matches the message perfectly. We can certainly use this sentiment these days. And the Country Music Hall of Famer is still whisperin’ as effectively as ever. He’s a treasure, for sure.

ERIC CHURCH/”Through My Ray-Bans”
Writers: Eric Church/Luke Laird/Barry Dean; Publisher: none listed; Producer: none listed; Label: EMI
-Pulsating and inspirational, this heart-touching lyric poem reaches out to the crowds he used to see beyond the footlights. Eric asks us to have faith and to hold each other in solidarity. I’m with you, bro.

JON LANGSTON/”Happy Ever After”
Writers: Blake Bollinger/Jon Langston/Brent Anderson; Publisher: none listed; Producer: none listed; Label: EMI/32 Bridge
-Fun, drawling and utterly countrified. She dumps the hillbilly for a trust-fund dude. So the redneck heads to a honky-tonk, downs some cold ones, plays Hank on the jukebox and meets a babe. Therefore, he’s “Happy Ever After….Her.”

NELLY & FLORIDA GEORGIA LINE/”Lil Bit”
Writers: none listed; Publisher: none listed; Producer: none listed; Label: Columbia
-This is a taste of Nelly’s forthcoming “country influenced” EP The Heartland. The St.Louis rapper previously collaborated with FGL on a remix of “Cruise,” featured Tim McGraw on his hit “Over and Over” and recorded his own take on Thomas Rhett’s “Die a Happy Man.” This catchy jam is his best attempt yet to fuse twang with dope beats.

LEWIS BRICE/“Young”
Writers: Lewis Brice/Rozes/Joshua Logan Tangney; Publisher: none listed; Producer: Lewis Brice, Lee Brice & Ben Simonetti; Label: Pump House
-It’s a nostalgic look at what it was like to be youthful and carefree. Brice’s vocal has lots of warmth and personality. The production is too thickly processed.

LUKE DICK & MIRANDA LAMBERT/“Polyester”
Writers: Luke Dick/Chris Dubois; Publisher: none listed; Producer: none listed; Label: INgrooves
-I have always dug him as a songwriter. Who knew he was such a charming singer? His soft/fuzzy semi-spoken rasp swaps verses with Miranda’s bell-clear honky-tonk soprano while a spare little combo romps along. Luke’s documentary film that contains this on its soundtrack sounds fascinating.

TY HERNDON & KRISTIN CHENOWETH/”Orphans of God”
Writers: Joel Lindsey/Twila LaBar; Publisher: none listed; Producer: none listed; Label: TH
-This was originally sung by the CCM group Avalon. This duet by country hit maker Herndon and Broadway star Chenoweth drives home its message that we are equal and loved in His eyes. The over-the-top production is power-ballad pop all the way, complete with heavenly choir.

GABRIELLE MOONEY/”Come On In”
Writers: Kelly Johnson/Gabrielle Mooney/Jenna Johnson/Benjamin Joel Johnson; Publisher: none listed; Producer: none listed; Label: GM
-She wants her romantic partner to know who she is, a country gal. The voice has a pert quality with just a little tangy taste. Gabby is the older sister of the prodigiously gifted Shay Mooney, so I guess talent runs in the family.

DARIUS RUCKER/“Beers and Sunshine”
Writers: Darius Rucker/John Thomas Harding/Josh Osborne/Ross Copperman; Publisher: none listed; Producer: none listed; Label: Capitol Nashville
-What a cute line: “The only B.S. I need is Beers & Sunshine.” As usual, Rucker espouses easy-going good times and romance. No wonder radio loves him so.

CMA Awards Add Dan+Shay, Justin Bieber, Keith Urban To Performers Lineup

The Country Music Association has announced a slew of additional performers to its lineup for the 54th annual CMA Awards.

Jason Aldean, Jimmie Allen, Ingrid Andress, Dierks Bentley, Brothers Osborne, Dan + Shay with Justin Bieber, Jenee Fleenor, Little Big Town, Old Dominion, Jon Pardi, Carly Pearce and Lee Brice, Keith Urban, and Morgan Wallen will perform during the show, set for Nov. 11 at Nashville’s Music City Center and airing on ABC.

“We couldn’t be more excited to bring all of these incredible performances to life next Wednesday night and give our artists the chance to come together, in a big way, on television for the first time in months,” says Robert Deaton, CMA Awards Executive Producer. “As safety is our top priority, we have worked tirelessly over the past several months to fully transform Music City Center into a breathtaking setup that resembles the very first ‘CMA Awards Banquet and Show’ from 1967, and ensures our nominees, performers and their guests a fully safe and physically distant environment. We are honored, in this very challenging time, to help provide an escape and deliver a live awards show experience unlike any other this year.”

Brothers Osborne, reigning CMA Musician of the Year Fleenor, and reigning CMA New Artist of the Year Ashley McBryde will join Aldean and Bentley to open the show with a multi-show tribute to the late Charlie Daniels.

Dan+Shay will welcome Bieber to perform their three-time nominated “10,000 Hours,” while New Artist of the Year nominee Allen will perform his chart-topping hit “Best Shot” in addition to presenting the 2020 CMA Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award to trailblazing legend Charley Pride.

More tributes will be held throughout the show, as Little Big Town pays homage to Kenny Rogers and Jon Pardi honors Joe Diffie. To honor the 40th anniversary of the film Urban Cowboy, Old Dominion will perform Johnny Lee’s “Looking for Love.”

Two-time nominee Andress will perform her CMA Song of the Year nominated “More Hearts Than Mine,” while four-time nominee Pearce and two-time nominee Brice will perform “I Hope You’re Happy Now,” which is up for Song, Musical Event, and Music Video of the Year. Wallen will perform his single “More Than My Hometown.”

The Gettys Earn Chart-Topping Album With ‘Evensong’

Keith and Kristyn Getty

The Gettys’ latest album, Evensong: Hymns and Lullabies at the Close of Day, recently topped Billboard‘s Kid Albums chart, surpassing the chart’s long-reigning leader, Disney’s Frozen 2 soundtrack, for the first time in 36 weeks.

Irish-born modern-hymn writers, Keith & Kristyn Getty collaborated with several country, bluegrass, and classical artists on the project, including Vince Gill, Heather Headley, Ellie Holcomb, Sierra Hull, Deborah Klemme, Sandra McCracken, and Skye Peterson. Album producer Ben Shive was able to gather recordings from each musical collaborator and create a project fusing the Celtic, folk, bluegrass, classical, and Americana sound the Gettys have become known for.

Keith Getty states, “This project is so much broader than simply a project for children. From the earliest age to our waning years, the hymns and songs we sing are some of our closest companions, shaping the way we think about life, about God, about ourselves, and about others. We wanted to create a timeless album that our children could grow old gracefully with and that people of every age could use as a way to refocus their minds and hearts in the midst of the business of life. This project is for the entire family.”

BMLG, CreatiVets To Release EP On Nov. 6

Big Machine Label Group and CreatiVets will release the Veterans Day Special EP on Nov. 6. The project is part of Big Machine Records’ ongoing support of the nonprofit that offers combat veterans who are struggling with PTSD and brain injuries a musical outlet to promote wellness.

The three-track EP includes Brantley Gilbert, Love and Theft, and Kalsey Kulyk, and follows the release of the full-length project Veteran Songs, which came out in July.

“We had an overwhelming response after the release of our album Veteran Songs from veterans from around the country. Veterans said they felt like every song was speaking directly to them, and that they felt like they weren’t alone in their thoughts and feelings,” said CreatiVets Co-Founder/Executive Director Richard Casper. “I have never been more excited to share these two stories of two amazing veterans that poured their heart out. I am also extremely thankful to Brantley Gilbert and Big Machine for adding an exclusive live version of Brantley’s No. 1 single “One Hell Of An Amen” to this EP so we can reach more veterans than ever.”

VETERANS DAY SPECIAL EP TRACK LIST:
1. “Helpless” (featuring Love And Theft)
2. “Picture In The Frame” (featuring Kalsey Kulyk)
3. “One Hell Of An Amen (Live/CreatiVets Veterans Day Special)” by Brantley Gilbert

Moon Taxi, Jimmie Allen Collaborate On New Version Of “Hometown Heroes”

Moon Taxi and Jimmie Allen have teamed up on a new version of the band’s single “Hometown Heroes.” The track was originally released in March of this year and has become an anthem of appreciation for frontline workers in 2020.

Moon Taxi’s Trevor Terndrup and Spencer Thomson will be guests on Allen’s Wildcard Radio show on Apple Music at 5 p.m. ET today (Nov. 4) talking about the track and other things happening in their career these days. The band will be releasing their next full length album, Silver Dream, on Jan. 22, 2021.

“Doing a collaboration in this crazy year seemed like a far fetched idea, but somehow it worked out. Jimmie brings a fresh, lively spirit to one of our most personal songs and we are so honored to put this song out with him. We should also take a moment to congratulate Jimmie on his CMA nomination [for New Artist of the Yera],” said Terndrup.

“I’ve been a fan of Moon Taxi for some time now. To record a song with them was something I’ve wanted to do since I first heard those guys. I’ve been looking forward to sharing this with the world,” said Allen.

Grand View Research Estimates Music Streaming Market Size To Be Worth Nearly $77 Billion By 2027

The music streaming market size is estimated to reach $76.9 billion by 2027, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc. The growing adoption of digital music services is one of the key factors driving the market.

A growing preference for on-demand music services on platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, SoundCloud, and Bandcamp is likely to drive the industry over the forecast period, according to the report, which also noted the industry is expected to witness significant growth amidst the COVID-19 pandemic globally, as most of the outdoor leisure activities are on a standstill. The download and usage of music streaming apps have been on the rise since lockdowns were imposed across several countries severely affected by the pandemic. Spotify witnessed an upsurge in its monthly active users by 29% year-on-year to 299 million users in the second quarter of 2020.

The increasing integration of technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Extended Reality is expected to support the growth of the market over the forecast period. Machine Learning-integrated music platforms analyze the artists, songs, and albums a user listens to most frequently to discover what appeals to them. Based on the analysis, daily playlists are created and related tracks are suggested, improving search engines, and providing a better understanding of consumer preferences. The app segment dominated the market and accounted for the largest revenue share in 2019, and is expected to continue its dominance over the forecast period. The commercial end-use segment is anticipated to capture nearly 40% of the revenue share by 2027.
