Country Radio Seminar To Spotlight Ken Burns’ ‘Country Music’ Documentary

The upcoming Country Radio Seminar (CRS) will highlight the highly-anticipated documentary Country Music, which will premiere on PBS this fall. Writer/producer Dayton Duncan, part of the team behind the eight-part, 16-hour project, will appear as part of CRS’s 2019 keynote event, to be held Feb. 13 at 4 p.m. during CRS at Omni Hotel in Nashville.

Ken Burns, who directed and co-produced the film with long-time collaborators Duncan and Julie Dunfey, will appear via a taped intro piece, followed by Duncan discussing the film. Attendees will also get an early look at clips with rare footage and interviews conducted over the six years it took to produce the film. CRS Board President, Kurt Johnson will conclude the panel with an overview of how radio can get involved with this landmark event.

Country Music chronicles the highs and lows of country music’s early days, from southern Appalachia’s songs of struggle, heartbreak, and faith to the rollicking Western swing of Texas, California’s honky-tonks and Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry. The film follows the evolution of country music throughout the 20th century as it eventually emerges to become “America’s music.”

The film explores crucial questions, “What is country music?” and “Where did it come from?” while focusing on the biographies of the fascinating trailblazers who created and shaped it — from the Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, Bill Monroe and Bob Wills to Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn, Charley Pride, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Garth Brooks and many more — as well as the times in which they lived. More than 100 interviews were conducted in conjunction with this project.

“Ken Burns’ documentary is a monumental celebration of the country music genre,” said CMA Chief Executive Officer, Sarah Trahern. “CMA is actively engaging our members to participate in this landmark series, and we’re delighted to share a sneak peek of the documentary with those attending CRS.”

Country Radio Seminar will be held Feb. 13 through Feb. 15 at Omni Nashville, in Music City.

KPM Music Library Debuts On Streaming And Download Services

The KPM Music Library has fully digitized its catalog, which is now available to download and stream in its entirety. The move by Sony/ATV Music Publishing division EMI Production Music means every recording in KPM’s catalogue is now available for sync licensing and is also on the digital music services, including Spotify, Apple Music, iTunes and Amazon.

“We are proud to have taken this initiative to make KPM the first major music library to be fully digitized and available to our global broadcast clients and music lovers to enjoy,” said EMI Production Music Senior Content and Distribution Manager Paul Sandell. “There is no bigger name library music than KPM, which is reflected by its rich and diverse catalogue spanning 70 years, including some of the best-known television theme tunes. We know this launch will not be lost on the sampling community as some of the rarest gems from the EMI vaults will be available for fans to access for the first time since the original ‘60s and ‘70s vinyl pressings.”

KPM’s music library contains more than 30,000 recordings covering every genre of music from orchestral to cutting-edge indie. KPM occupies a central place in library music, (or production music) which was born before TV but boomed as TVs became household items, creating the opportunity for composers and session musicians to experiment without the pressures of writing a “hit.” Library music is simply background music used for a variety of media sources, primarily TV, film and radio.

KPM is the most established name in library music and for the past 50 years has been a division of EMI Music Publishing, now part of Sony/ATV Music Publishing. Among the countless gems in the library are the themes to UK TV programs including Grandstand, ITV News At Ten, the BBC’s Wimbledon coverage and Grange Hill. It also includes the celebrated KPM 1000 series, which was launched in the mid-1960s and became known as “Greensleeves” because of its uniform dark green album covers.
