Three Keith Urban Albums Head To Vinyl, Including Latest ‘Graffiti U’

Keith Urban’s albums, Be Here, Love, Pain & the Whole Crazy Thing, and his latest Graffiti U are available now on vinyl for the first time ever via Capitol Nashville/UMe.  The albums join the already-available Urban LPs Fuse, Get Closer and Golden Road, all of which were first released on vinyl in 2016, making Urban’s entire album catalog now available to vinyl listeners.

The three hit-filled albums are pressed on standard weight black vinyl and have all been expanded to 2LPs to present the music in the highest quality.

Graffiti U, Urban’s ninth studio album, emerged as one of 2018’s Top 10 best-selling albums in any genre. The 15-song collection includes the hits “Female,” “Parallel Lines” and its latest song “Coming Home,” featuring Julia Michaels, which borrows an iconic guitar riff from Merle Haggard’s classic “Mama Tried.”

The double platinum smash Love, Pain & the Whole Crazy Thing, originally released in November 2006, features the No. 1 hit “Once in a Lifetime,” which set a record for what was then the highest debuting single in the six-decade history of Billboard‘s Hot Country Songs chart, along with three more Top Five hits: “I Told You So,” “Everybody,” and Urban’s second Grammy-winning song “Stupid Boy.”

Be Here, Urban’s third American album, was originally released in 2004, and achieved quadruple platinum status, spawning three Number No. 1 singles, “Days Go By,” “Better Life” and the Rodney Crowell-penned “Making Memories of Us.”

Keith Urban, busbee and Carrie Underwood Celebrate No. 1 “The Fighter”

“‘The Fighter’ was born out of a real conversation I had with my wife before we got married, trying to reassure her that I was a safe place and that I would take care of her so she could remain vulnerable and didn’t have to become hardened,” confessed Keith Urban at the No. 1 party for one of his 24 No. 1 songs.

“…I’m saying too much, but people say you have to have thick skin…I don’t agree with that,” continued Urban. “I think you should be vulnerable and have your spirit and be real. And maybe if people would stop being so harsh—especially toward ourselves sometimes—we could be just me more of who we already are, which is pure spirit, fragile and real. Real human beings. ‘When they try to get to you, baby I’ll be the fighter’ is what that’s about.”

Urban was joined on stage by co-writer and co-producer busbee, who was celebrating his fifth No. 1 single. Urban’s duet partner and labelmate Carrie Underwood also joined to celebrate the chart-topping song. The three performed “The Fighter” during the party, one year and two weeks after the single reached the top of the charts.

“It’s never too late to celebrate a No. 1 record,” teased host Jody Williams in representing his BMI writers. Pinnacle Bank made a donation on behalf of the writers.

“This is an honest [song] with one person completely showing all their vulnerabilities,” gushed label president Mike Dungan. “…and it’s a tempo. What a wonderful thing!”

While Underwood’s vocals were recorded in Pennsylvania, the song was written at Kensaltown Studios in London after busbee flew to write with Urban during a break.

“Keith worked out in the morning and ran to the studio,” recalled busbee. “As soon as he could get it out of his mouth we were singing this to each other. It was one of those magical days. [Songwriting] is an otherly thing. I believe in God…we walk in to a room and pull something out of the sky.”

Underwood testified to the songwriting process, saying, “The demo was busbee doing all the girl stuff. Thank you for that little gift. I saved it…that’s gonna come back to haunt you at some point.”

“This is a spins party, so it’s about our radio promotion team,” continued Dungan. “Nobody beats the Capitol team: Bobby Young, Mara Sidweber, Brent Jones, Annie Sandor, Ashley Laws, Megan Youngblood, and Katelyn Lester.” Nearly everyone who took the stage recognized the same promo department, including Urban, who named everyone without notes.

Credit also went to UMG staffers Taylor Freeman, Amy Jackson, Lori Christian, Royce Risser, Cindy Mabe, Brian Wright, Stephanie Wright, Donna Hughes, Brent Jones, Chris Schuler and David Friedman. Additional credit went to Borman Entertainment’s Gary Borman, Elisabeth Ashley and DJ Kisshauer; and CAA’s Darin Murphy. A special thanks went out to Serban Ghenea for mixing the record in addition to Underwood’s management at The HQ, Ann Edelblute. “We shot two videos,” recalled Urban in thanking Underwood and Edelblute. “It’s never happened in my whole life that we had to shoot a second video, and both of you showed up…and multiple performances. Thank you.”

Williams congratulated busbee’s publishers on the song, Ben Vaughn and BJ Hill from Warner/Chappell. Publishers who lauded the creatives from the stage included Daniel Lee from BMG and Ron Stuve from Universal Music Publishing Group. Brandi Simms from the CMA was also on hand to deliver No. 1 medallions.

Industry Ink: Applause Award, Big Branch Productions, Outloud Music Festival

Former BMI Exec To Receive Applause Award

The nonprofit Tennessee Performing Arts Center (TPAC) will present its highest honor, the Applause Award, to Bridgestone Americas and John Cody, the former Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer of Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI), at the 2018 TPAC Gala, on Saturday, Aug. 25.

Cody served at BMI from 2006-2010, served on TPAC’s Board of Directors from 2007 to 2016, including two years as chairman from 2010 to 2012. During that time, his passion for the performing arts and his willingness to roll up his sleeves and dig into major projects like TPAC’s historic step to launch a national tour of “9 to 5” with Dolly Parton in 2010 was evident.

Carrie Underwood will launch a new arena tour, The Cry Pretty Tour 360, in Spring 2019. Sponsored by CALIA, the new tour will kick off on May 1 in Greensboro, North Carolina, and will play 55 arenas across the U.S. and Canada and be promoted by AEG Presents. She will be joined on tour by special guests Maddie & Tae and Runaway June. The trek includes a stop at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on Sept. 27, 2019.

Tickets for the concerts go on sale to the general public beginning Friday, Aug. 17 at 10am local time. Also beginning Monday, Aug. 13, a limited number of exclusive VIP Packages will be available which include an amazing selection of tickets, Meet & Greets, autographed memorabilia, custom merchandise and much more.

Following her successful “The Storyteller Tour – Stories in the Round,” the new production will feature a brand-new stage in the middle of the arena floor, creating a unique 360-degree setting to allow fans on all sides of the arena an intimate view of the concert. Barry Lather (Rihanna, Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson) is the tour’s Creative Director, and Nick Whitehouse/Fireplay (Justin Timberlake, Beyonce) is Production Designer.

“I love performing in the round,” says Underwood. “It’s so much fun for me and the band to play in every direction and creates a much more intimate and immersive experience for the audience, even in a larger arena setting. It’s been exciting to introduce audiences to Cry Pretty and I can’t wait to bring the new album to life on this tour, along with all of the songs we love to play live. I’m thrilled to be going out with an amazing line-up – Maddie & Tae and Runaway June are incredible artists that are going to bring even more electricity to our shows.”

Former SESAC Headquarters Purchased

The building at 55 Music Square East, home to the former SESAC headquarters, has been purchased by Jim Caden. According to Nashville Business Journal, Caden has plans to occupy one suite in the 16,000-square-foot building and lease the rest, after completing more than $500,000 in renovations.

In 2016, SESAC moved its headquarters to another building in the Music Row area, at 35 16th Ave. S.
