Track Listing, Writer Credits Revealed For Michael Ray’s ‘Amos’

Michael Ray‘s new album, Amos, is named as a sweet tribute to the man who inspired him to become a musician, his grandfather. Ray’s grandfather passed away just two months prior to Ray’s debut on the Grand Ole Opry, and he was the one who gave him his start in music, inviting him to play with the family band from the time he was just 9 years old.

The 11-song collection produced by Scott Hendricks is set for release on Friday, June 1, and includes songs penned by Rhett Akins, Josh Osborne, Luke Laird, Shane McAnally, Matt McGinn, and more. Fans can pre-order the album today and hear Ray’s current Top 20-and-climbing single, “Get To You,” as well as his show opener “Fan Girl.”

“When it came time to pick the next song for fans to hear, I listened to the fans,” shares Ray. “For months we have been playing these songs on the road and we start most every show with ‘Fan Girl,’ so it was time to put this song in their hands. The lyrics, ‘You give me that front row feeling/Screaming with my hands up/Walk in the room and everybody stands up,’ create such a powerful visual. That — equated to how you feel about a girl — is a perspective I had not heard before, yet I know exactly what that feeling is.”

The collection includes songs like the nostalgic “Summer Water,” which evokes memories of Ray’s upbringing on the waters of central Florida, “Dancing Forever” a tender ballad, and “Drink One For Me” in which Ray pays tribute to his friends in the military.

Sugarland Releases New Single ‘Babe’ Featuring Taylor Swift

Sugarland has teamed up with Taylor Swift for their new single, “Babe,” which is being released today. Swift penned “Babe” with Train frontman Pat Monahan, and last fall she offered the track to Sugarland for the pair’s forthcoming album BIGGER, due out June 8 on Big Machine Records and Universal Music Group Nashville.

“We’ve never put someone else’s song on a Sugarland record, but we were immediately interested in ‘Babe’ the first time we heard it!” said Jennifer Nettles. “This one really felt like it belonged so we saved it for the final afternoon of our recording session; a special time for us.”

“Our last hours in the studio have always been good luck,” continued Kristian Bush. “‘All I Want To Do’ was from a final session, so was ‘Stuck Like Glue.’ The biggest compliment was when she heard our take on the track and emailed us to say she wanted to be a part of it!”

“This collaboration is the perfect combination of mutual admiration for each other and mutual admiration for great songs. As artists, we really see the world through a similar lens,” added Nettles.

“Babe” follows previously released tracks “Still The Same” and “Bigger,” which are included on Sugarland’s first project together in nearly six years. The 11-song set is now available for pre-order with new tracks set to be delivered in the weeks leading up to the full release.

The duo will appear on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! May 2, and hit the road for their Still The Same Tour on May 25.

Exclusive: ACM Entertainer Of The Year Jason Aldean Triumphs With ‘Rearview Town’

On Sunday night (April 15), Jason Aldean was crowned the Academy of Country Music Awards’ Entertainer of the Year for the third consecutive year.

The moment onstage was a win for Aldean and his team, but for the country community, the win also symbolized a triumph in the face of adversity six months after Aldean’s set at Route 91 Harvest Festival became the site of a massacre. The win signaled that country music’s fans and artists would carry on, keep moving forward and keep creating new moments.

In some ways, the moment also mirrored Aldean’s efforts to keep pushing forward, to shift the boundaries, with those efforts on display in Rearview Town, Aldean’s eighth Broken Bow Records album, which released just days before his ACM win.

Aldean’s first single from the album, “You Make It Easy,” an affectionate slow-burn penned by Florida Georgia Line’s Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard, alongside Jordan Schmidt and Morgan Wallen, introduced a blusier vibe than Aldean has been known for.

“We’ve cut songs that sort of had a bit of that blues vibe, but never released it as a single,” Aldean tells MusicRow. “That was a key thing for me on this whole record, just finding songs that were different. The last couple of records we cut a lot of songs that I felt like were good songs but I felt like they were safe songs. There was nothing that really stood out about a lot of those songs—not all of them. They were solid, but didn’t have that something different that made them go from a hit to a major hit.”

The song came courtesy of FGL’s Tyler Hubbard. “Tyler came to my house early on in the process of making this album. We just got in my truck and started riding around. They always throw us a couple of songs they think would work for us. When I heard this song, I said, ‘You guys aren’t cutting this, are you?’ He said, ‘We aren’t going into the studio for a few months, so I don’t know, but if you want it, it’s yours.’ I said, ‘I want to cut it and I’m going into the studio in two weeks.’

“I think that speaks volumes about how talented and creative those guys are. They are always like, ‘Hey, if you like that one, cut it. We’ll write another one.’ They’ve always been really cool about that and good to me.”

With his 2011 hit “Dirt Road Anthem,” Aldean struck upon a blend of lyrics that encapsulated his rural sensibilities, while incorporating a signature rock swagger and rapped verses that became a gateway for fans with an affinity for both country and rap.

On Rearview Town, he’ll give fans a new rap segment to memorize and own at every concert, with “Getting Warmed Up,” a track Aldean found late in the recording process.

“It had a rap sample put at the end of it,” Aldean recalls of the demo. “I didn’t think it worked, but thought it might be cool to have something like that in the song, so we had them go back and write a rap part to see if it would even work. Then we cut the song with and without the rap section, to see which we liked better.”

One of Rearview Town’s standout tracks, “Drowns The Whiskey,” marks Aldean’s second time recording with Miranda Lambert (Lambert previously collaborated with Aldean on a song titled “Grown Woman,” from Aldean’s 2007 album Relentless). Miranda went into the studio with Aldean’s producer Michael Knox to record her vocals while Aldean was on tour.

“She’s a great singer, probably my favorite singer out there,” Aldean says. “I had another song in mind for her to record on this album. I sent that other song to her and she didn’t love it. I was kind of going back and forth between the two so I sent her [“Drowns The Whiskey”] and she loved it.”

They say every song eventually finds its appropriate home, and “Drowns The Whiskey” is no exception. Aldean originally thought the song would be a great fit for Tyler Farr.

“The best I remember, that song has been around for a while. I was producing some songs for Tyler Farr’s album. I had this song and I can’t remember if it got sent to me or to Tyler but I wanted to cut it on him and he didn’t really want to cut it. So I said, ‘I think it’s a hit and if you’re not going to cut it, I’m going to cut it.’ I want to say we could have recorded it on our last album but at the time we still didn’t know if he was going to cut it, so we saved it and included it on this record.”

It’s natural that songs with a slightly softer touch, such as “You Make It Easy,” and “Girl Like You,” have slipped into the track listing for Rearview Town, given that Aldean married wife Brittany Kerr in 2015, and the couple welcomed son Memphis in December 2017.

“I definitely think that probably plays a factor,” he says. “For me, most of the time when I cut a ballad type thing it’s usually in the vein of ‘Any ‘Ol Barstool’ or the truth. I’ve never been drawn to sing warm and fuzzy kind of lyrics, but when the right song comes across that is believable and isn’t too mushy, I can relate to it. ‘Girl Like You’ was on the softer side, but sonically, that’s rock ‘n’ roll. “

As his achievements have mounted and his hard-earned career has become more complex, Aldean has strived to stay in touch with the drive and work ethic that took him from a newcomer on a then-fledgling indie label, to a country star, earning his chart-topping hits, awards, and the respect of his fans.

“I definitely had to fight for it a bit more,” Aldean says. “My label didn’t have the money that a lot of these other labels have and there were times that stuff kind of showed. But for me, I was building my career as an artist as they were building the label. It was a team, so for us to grow it all together was really cool. I’ve always played like I have a chip on my shoulder, not in a bad way, but like I had something to prove to people. I can rest easier now. but I think to do this business, you have to have a little bit of that chip on your shoulder to keep your drive a little bit, so I hope I never lose that.”

Backstage at his recent Weekend Warrior World Tour date at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Paisley inked the deal as label group executives and management gathered around.

Paisley released his 11th studio album, Love And War, in April 2017. The album would become country music’s first visual album, via a limited-time exclusive with Apple Music. The project is now available on VEVO.

Paisley’s Netflix comedy special, Brad Paisley’s Comedy Rodeo, debuted Aug. 15, 2017 and the entertainer recently partnered with Boot Barn to develop an exclusive line of jeans, hats, T-shirts, jewelry, belts and woven shirts called Moonshine Spirit by Brad Paisley.

The collection features a group of songs narrated from a female perspective, with themes ranging from grappling with self-esteem in “Mirror, Mirror” to mental illness and addiction in the track “Wasn’t I Paying Attention?” and the power of a changed perspective with a dash of her humor in “Break Out The Champagne.”

DISClaimer: Tourmates Gretchen Peters, Kim Richey Top New Americana Tunes

The Americana genre is bringing out some of its most stellar artists for the spring season.

Impressively, there is also gender parity in today’s overview of the style. Five male and five female acts are vying for your attention.

This week, the gals have the goods. Gretchen Peters and Kim Richey finish in a tie for the Disc of the Day award. Which is especially cool, since they are touring together.

The DisCovery Award goes to the acoustic female trio I’m With Her. Rounder Records strikes again.

KIM RICHEY/Chase Wild Horses
Writers: Kim Richey/Mike Henderson; Producer: Brad Jones; Publishers: BMG/Red Equals Luck/Five Window/Warner-Tamerlane, BMI; Yep Roc (track)
– This rumbling country rocker addresses maturing and adulthood. Her sense of melody is exquisite, and her voice remains a soaring and deeply affecting instrument. An A-plus effort from her new Edgeland album. Buy it.

KYLE FREDERICK/Already November
Writers: Kyle Frederick; Producers: Byron House/Kyle Frederick; Publishers: Melody Chef/Byron House, BMI; Belody Chef
– The title tune of this artist’s new collection raises a glass at a wake for lost youth. He sings in a hoarse, almost strangulated fashion. The backing track features choppy percussion and electric-guitar growls.

BRANDI CARLILE/The Joke
Writers: Brandi Carlile/Phil Hanseroth/Tim Hanseroth/Dave Cobb; Producers: Cobb/Shooter Jennings; Publishers: Southern Oracle/WB/Old No. 7/Warner-Tamerlane, ASCAP/BMI; Elektra (track)
– She has one of those warm, conversational singing voices that’s always welcome. Here, it is bathed in echoey atmosphere and cushioned with lush strings. The ballad is an anthem for outsiders who will ultimately triumph in life. It appears on this Nashvillian’s excellent CD By the Way, I Forgive You.

BILL LLOYD/It’s Happening Now
Writers: none listed; Producer: none listed; Publishers: none listed; Whole In One
-Lloyd’s current release is an acoustic effort. Its romantic, lilting title song finds his still-boyish tenor wafting over jangly guitar and sighed backup vocals. He’s as tuneful as ever.

DULCIE TAYLOR/Halfway To Jesus
Writers: Taylor; Producer: George Nauful; Publishers: Raven in the Window, ASCAP; Black Iris (track)
– This is a dramatic, minor-key, cautionary ode about the damages we have inflicted on our natural world and of the cataclysmic climate that results. Swirling and compelling.

JOHN PRINE/Boundless Love
Writers: John Prine/Dan Auerbach/Pat McLaughlin; Producer: Dave Cobb; Publishers: Tommy Jack/Corn Country/Hour Box, BMI; Oh Boy (track)
– The new Prine CD, The Tree of Forgiveness, is like a warm greeting from an old friend. This tune of acceptance and grace is just one of its many pleasures. His drawling, distinctive folky singing voice still charms. And his lyrics continue to contain delightful gems like, “Sometimes my old heart is like a washing machine/It bounces around ‘til my soul comes clean/And when I’m clean and hung out to dry/I’m gonna make you laugh until you cry.”

GRETCHEN PETERS/Disappearing Act
Writer: Peters; Producers: Doug Lancio, Gretchen Peters & Barry Walsh; Publishers: Circus Girl, ASCAP; Scarlett Letter
– Here, she inhabits the character of a world-weary middle-aged woman whose husband passes away, her babies die and her soldier son’s soul vanishes in Iraq. Her voice is appropriately downtrodden, and the electro-pop production underscores the resigned, defeated mood. You’ll find it on this Americana goddess’s new CD Dancing With the Beast.

BOB REA/Southbound
Writers: Bob Rea/Erik Stucky; Producer: Steve Daly; Publisher: none listed; Shiny Dime (track)
– The title tune of this singer-songwriter’s album is a breezy, rolling ode to gal who is traveling free and easy. The dobro solo is dandy, as is his drawled delivery. Recommended.

I’M WITH HER/See You Around
Writers: Sara Watkins/Sarah Jarosz/Aoife O’Donovan; Producers: Ethan Johns/I’m With Her; Publishers: Fiddle & Fall/SoRaw/Cosmic Seed, ASCAP/BMI; Rounder (track)
– This female trio’s CD title tune and lead-off track is an airy, soprano-led song about shattered dreams and shards of heartbreak. There’s a lot to like in these picturesque lyrics and flawless vocal harmonies. Jarosz is a Grammy winning Americana solo artist. Watkins is a veteran of Nickel Creek. O’Donovan has a solo career and has collaborated with classical music’s Yo-Yo Ma. All three are accomplished instrumentalists, but their shining vocals together are what you’ll remember. Other gems to admire on the album include the sunny “Ain’t That Fine” and the dazzling single/video “Game to Lose.”

ANDERSON EAST/All On My Mind
Writers: Anderson East/Ed Sheeran/Johnny McDaid/Aaron Raitiere; Producer: Dave Cobb; Publishers: Farmland/Ed Shearan/Sony-ATV/Spirit B Unique/Polar Patrol/Kobalt/Warner-Tamerlane/One Tooth/Super LCS, BMI/PRS; Elektra (track)
– I remain a fan. His ferocious, blue-eyed soul singing pierces through a dark, rock rhythm track, massed strings and keyboard flourishes on this searing, fevered dream of obsession. It can be found on his new album titled Encore.
