New Biography Illuminates Life Of Johnny Cash Through His Songs

A new book examining the life of Johnny Cash through his songs, The Man in Song: A Discographic Biography of Johnny Cash (University of Arkansas Press), is set to be released on April 16.

Music journalist and historian John Alexander has drawn on decades of studying Cash’s music and life for the new book, from his difficult depression-era Arkansas childhood through his death in 2003, to tell a life story through Cash songs that are both familiar and obscure. It rifles through Cash’s work with the Tennessee Two at Sam Phillips’ Sun Studios, the unique concept albums Cash recorded for Columbia Records, his spiritual songs, the albums recorded live at prisons, songs about the love of his life, June Carter Cash, tunes dealing with murder, death and addiction, songs about ramblers, and even some silly songs.

“This book is a totally different light on Cash than I have ever seen before,” says Larry Gatlin in the book’s foreword. “A masterpiece, written by a learned historian and renowned musicologist—and an expert on Johnny Cash and his music.”

The Man in Song will be available for purchase wherever books are sold, as well as online at UAPress.com.

Warner/Chappell Music, the music publishing arm of Warner Music Group, today announced that it has extended its worldwide publishing agreement with award-winning songwriter Nicolle Galyon. Galyon’s most recent work includes Keith Urban’s “Female” and “Coming Home,” Lady Antebellum’s “Heart Break,” Kenny Chesney’s “All the Pretty Girls,” Lee Brice’s “Boy,” and Dan + Shay’s “Tequila,” as well as pop venture “Consequences,” for Camila Cabello.

“Warner took the chance & championed me ten years ago when I connected with BJ Hill,” said Galyon. “They fought the good fight with me as I grew up as a songwriter. Now I feel like we’re in constant celebration and it is so much fun to share these successes together. I’m so glad we’ve continued to take the chance on each other all these years, and I’m excited to share both a wonderful history and shining future with the same company.”

Ben Vaughn, President of Warner/Chappell Nashville added, “Nicolle is one of the most talented individuals to grace Music Row. Her command of lyric and melody has propelled her to be recognized as someone that has true commerciality & depth in every writing session. There is no limit to the places she can continue to grow in this industry as a songwriter, vocalist, producer, mentor, & collaborator. Everyone in the Warner/Chappell family is proud to continue a relationship with a friend and partner like Nicolle.”

Galyon made a mark on the industry with Keith Urban’s No. 1 hit “We Were Us” featuring Miranda Lambert, and with Lambert’s lead single “Automatic,” having contributed to five songs on the country icon’s album Platinum, which won the Grammy for Best Country Album in 2015, and Album of the Year in 2014 via both the Academy of Country Music (ACM) and the Country Music Association (CMA). “Automatic” received a 2015 Grammy nomination for Best Country Song, and was awarded ACM’s 2014 Song of the Year (in both the Artist and Songwriter categories), and CMA’s 2014 Single of the Year. In 2017, Galyon broke barriers by co-writing and co-producing RaeLynn’s album Wild Horse, marking the first time in a decade that a female co-produced an album that debuted No. 1 on the Billboard Country Album chart.

Country Music Television (CMT) named Galyon a mentor for their 2018 Next Women of Country campaign, and the CMA Foundation recently selected the songwriter as an ambassador for their Music Education Matters program.

Brad Paisley welcomed fellow guitar slayer Lindsay Ell, along with “Small Town Boy” hitmaker Dustin Lynch and Chase Bryant for his hometown show in Nashville on Friday (April 6) at Bridgestone Arena, as part of Paisley’s Weekend Warrior World Tour.

Among the show’s highlights were Paisley, Byrant and Ell collaborating on the show’s encore of “Alcohol,” and Lynch honoring Paisley as one of the “Greatest Of All Time (G.O.A.T.),” by gifting Paisley with a baby goat onstage.

Earlier in the day Paisley hosted approximately 200 Music Business students from his alma mater Belmont University at his pre-show sound check. Lee Ann Womack Beams During Double Nashville Sell-Out

Lee Ann Womack‘s years as a major label country music hitmaker still serve her well.

Her song preferences within those UMG albums is evident. Some of those titles she carries with her today include the obligatory “I Hope You Dance” crossover joined by other country top 40 singles from that album, specifically. Some include those written and/or recorded by heroes Rodney Crowell (“Ashes By Now”), Buddy/Julie Miller (“Does My Ring Burn Your Finger”) and Don Williams (“Lord, I Hope This Day Is Good”).

Perhaps some of that major label notoriety helped Womack sell out Friday and Saturday (April 6, 7) shows at the grungier east side Nashville club, The Basement East. But the more recent disestablishment image she’s developed these past two albums—more indulgent, critically acclaimed indie releases—have kept audiences coming back to cheer every lyric.

Traditional country fiddle and steel still never left Womack’s sights, what she called real country music while promoting her latest The Lonely, the Lonesome & the Gone (ATO Records). Her clinched, honky tonk howl is notably more apparent these days—finding her stride with the sounds in her soul.

That voice has attracted pitches to join tribute albums. Such was the case with Restoration: Reimagining The Songs Of Elton John and Bernie Taupin (released April 6). Womack offered a swampy “Honky Cat” while Taupin himself reciprocated, attending that Womack club show in Nashville the day after the album’s release.

Womack’s daringly steadfast reputation remains preserved, guided by the inner voice developed after years in a Texas radio booth with her DJ father. Obligatory homages to George Jones thus capped her show, which was also filled with original titles like “I May Hate Myself In The Morning,” “Last Call,” and “The Fool.” Womack welcomed new traditional titles too, including “The Lonely, The Lonesome & The Gone,” “All the Trouble,” “Chances Are” and “The Way I’m Livin’.”

Thus, as time moves forward—20 years and two husbands for Womack, to be exact—certain titles in her discography were absent from the stage show. “Twenty Years And Two Husbands Ago,” “Either Way,” “I Know Why The River Runs” and “The Healing Kind,” all of which pay homage to her more traditional country heritage, were left in her back pocket. Perhaps why Nashville diehards reached into theirs after the show for anything inscribed with “LAW” at the merch booth.

LAW, her initials, has become a synonym for the same, true-to-your-roots country music that Womack continues to relish in all these years later. Fans clearly want more.

Bobby Bare Celebrates Birthday With Garth Brooks Opry Surprise

Bobby Bare got a pretty great birthday gift Saturday night (April 7) as The Grand Ole Opry welcomed him into the fold as an official Opry member on the Country Music Hall of Famer’s 83rd birthday. Bare had been a member of the Opry cast in the 1960s and 70s, after which his official Opry membership lapsed.

He began his Opry set with a collaboration with Mary Gauthier on “I Drink,” a song she penned and which appears on Bare’s most recent album, Things Change.  Bare’s son, Bobby Bare, Jr., then joined his father on the 1970 hit “Come Sundown.” It was the pair’s first Opry collaboration in more than 40 years.

Opry segment host Jeannie Seely then made note of Bare’s birthday and surprised the Opry audience by welcoming Opry member Garth Brooks to the stage.

“I gotta tell you, this might be one of the coolest honors I have ever had bestowed on me,” said Brooks about the surprise. “I don’t know if you know, but it was less than a month ago I was standing right here when I inducted the newest member of the Grand Ole Opry, a kid named Chris Janson. Sweet guy. He sat in this circle of wood and he cried like a baby. And you know why he cried; because he gets it. He gets what it’s like to be a member of the family of the Grand Ole Opry. You get it,” Brooks continued. “…The Grand Ole Opry is family. Family is forever. So Mr. Bare, young man–as my dad would say– it is my honor, it is the Grand Ole Opry’s honor, to officially welcome you back, the great Bobby Bare, to the Grand Ole Opry.”

“I’ve got to tell you that this is quite a surprise. I was a member of the Opry for 10 years, but then I just drifted away. …,” Bare said. “Thank you to everybody on the Grand Ole Opry.”
