Jean Shepard celebrated the 60th anniversary of her Opry induction on Saturday (Nov. 21). Shepard, the first female to reach 60 years of Opry membership, became an official part of the Opry family on November 21, 1955.

Among a host of fellow Opry members on hand at the Ryman Auditorium to mark the occasion were her longtime friends and fellow Opry members Bill Anderson, Connie Smith, Marty Stuart, Mel Tillis, Jeannie Seely, Jesse McReynolds, and Vince Gill. In addition to her Opry anniversary, the day also marks the legendary artist’s birthday and wedding anniversary.

Introduced by Anderson, Shepard first sang the standard “Tennessee Waltz.” Next Anderson joined Shepard on the very first song she sang on the Opry, the duet smash “A Dear John Letter.”

Afterward, Anderson and Opry Entertainment President Steve Buchanan presented the Country Music Hall of Famer with both a gift commemorating the Opry’s 90th anniversary and an inscribed gold locket marking Shepard’s 60 years with the Opry.

“Sixty years is a long time to be anywhere, but I made it!” Shepard quipped on stage. “Thank you all for the love. I love you all!”

When Shepard began recording for Ken Nelson at Capitol Records in 1952, there was no precedent in country music for a young woman recording and touring on her own rather than as a member of a family team, couple, or as a band’s “girl singer.” The teenager who dared to sing “Twice the Lovin’ in Half the Time” as her first single would go on to have hard-country hits through the ’50s with “Don’t Fall in Love With a Married Man” and “The Root of All Evil (Is a Man).” Shepard’s hits continued through the classic “Slippin’ Away”.

Born in Oklahoma, Shepard grew up in Visalia, California, one of 10 children in a musically-inclined family that listened to the Opry on the radio but had to save pennies to buy a Jimmie Rodgers record once a year. Hank Thompson spotted her when she was just 14, singing and playing bass in an all-girl band she’d formed called the Melody Ranch Girls.

Thompson quickly brought her to the attention of Capitol Records. She was an early star, along with Porter Wagoner, of Red Foley’s Ozark Jubilee broadcasts out of Springfield, Missouri, and she preceded Wagoner to the Opry.

The announcement that Shepard was joining the Opry came as somewhat of a surprise 60 years ago. The legend remembers being at Nashville’s Andrew Jackson Hotel during the annual Disc Jockey convention with then-Opry manager Jim Denny.

“Jim was making some announcements to the DJs and the media,” Shepard recalled. “And he said, ‘By the way, we would like to welcome the newest member of the Grand Ole Opry, Jean Shepard. Happy birthday, Jean.’”

In 1960, Shepard married Opry great Hawkshaw Hawkins. The couple had two sons, Don and Harold, the latter born and named for Hawkins after his death in the tragic 1963 plane crash that also took the lives of Patsy Cline and Cowboy Copas. Today, Shepard is married to Benny Birchfield, a musician, singer and member of Nashville’s music community.

Rising Nashville artist-songwriter Steve Moakler has earned acclaim as a co-writer behind Dierks Bentley’s current single “Riser,” also the title track of Bentley’s current project.

Moakler is signed to Nashville’s Creative Nation for management; Creative Nation is owned by songwriter/producer Luke Laird and Beth Laird. Moakler visited the MusicRow offices to offer a preview of his next solo album, set to release in 2016. The project is being produced by Luke Laird, who earned a Grammy in 2014 for his work on Kacey Musgraves’ Same Trailer, Different Park. Laird also produced Musgraves’ current album, Pageant Material. Moakler is signed to Kobalt for publishing.

“We have about nine songs cut so far,” Moakler told MusicRow. The project includes Moakler’s debut single, “Suitcase,” which released today (Nov. 20) on Spotify. The tune, penned by Laird, Barry Dean, and Thomas Rhett, is the only outside song on the project.

“I remember hearing a demo of this song when my wife and I were driving in Minnesota,” said Moakler. “There was literally this rainbow and the sky was beautiful when we heard this. This song gave us a glimmer of hope, and was a reminder to not let distractions get in the way of living.”

Moakler’s preview performance also included “Steel Town,” a tribute to his Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, upbringing (co-written with Casey Beathard), as well as “Love Drunk.”

Moakler recently wrapped a tour, which was created by harnessing the power of social media. “We had this Winnebago, and we wanted to do a few shows, so I put it out on social media, asking if fans wanted us to come play their school, or church, or any other events,” he said. After receiving 125 offers, Moakler and his team were able to take the best offers and route a nearly 50-city tour.

Kenny Chesney Honored with Eighth ‘Billboard’ Touring Award

Kenny Chesney 2015

Kenny Chesney marked his eighth win at the Billboard Touring Conference and Awards this week (Nov. 18-19) at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City.

The touring star’s Big Revival Tour 2015 was the first tour after Chesney took off for a year and earned the entertainer his record achievement, Billboard Top Package Award. Joining Chesney this year for his mostly stadiums, some arenas and a few amphitheaters Big Revival 2015 Tour were Jason Aldean, Eric Church, Jake Owen, Brantley Gilbert, Old Dominion, Cole Swindell and Chase Rice – as well as Miranda Lambert at Chicago’s Soldier Field.

“We put a lot of thought into every year’s tour,” Chesney said of the honor. “It’s not just about bringing the music out to the No Shoes Nation, though obviously that’s what this relationship has been built on. It’s about how to create an experience every year that stands out, that’s worth remembering, that gives people a chance to love life, love music and have fun. This many years in, it’s still a thrill to be recognized for this part of what we do.”

Chesney first won the honor for 2005’s Somewhere in the Sun Tour, which featured Gretchen Wilson, Uncle Kracker and Pat Green. His next six tours also swept the category, starting with 2006’s The Road and The Radio Tour with Dierks Bentley and others, 2007’s Flip Flop Summer Tour with Sugarland, Pat Green, Brooks & Dunn and Sara Evans, then 2008’s Poets & Pirates Tour had a rotating cast of Keith Urban, Brooks & Dunn, Sammy Hagar, Gary Allan, Luke Bryan and LeAnn Rimes, followed by 2009’s Sun City Carnival with Miranda Lambert, Lady Antebellum, Sugarland and Montgomery Gentry, 2011’s Goin’ Coastal with Zac Brown Band, Uncle Kracker and Billy Currington and finally 2012’s all-stadium Brothers of the Sun Tour with Tim McGraw, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, and Jake Owen.

“One of the best things about these tours, especially the stadium shows, is taking out artists who’re starting to make an impact and exposing them to a lot of people,” Chesney says. “It’s like turning your friends onto all kinds of bands – like when you’re young and music and sports is all that matters. Turning people on to great music is one of the coolest things, and it makes putting these packages together something that’s more than just a formula or who’s hot.”

Chesney is already leaning into 2016 with a dozen Spread the Love Stadium dates announced, which are already set to feature Miranda Lambert, Sam Hunt and Old Dominion.
