Music industry executive Jim Foglesong died Tuesday (July 9) at a Nashville hospital after a brief illness. He was 90. Foglesong was the music executive who signed Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire, George Strait, the Oak Ridge Boys, Lee Greenwood and others to major label deals.
“Today, the music industry lost its greatest diplomat for kindness, tolerance, faith, and sincerity,” says Brooks. “But do not weep for Jim, I have never met a man with a stronger faith, anyone who knew Jim knows where he is now. Instead, weep for those of us who are left here without him…truly, a great, great man.”
“We have lost a giant of a man today,” says Katie Gillon, who worked closely with Foglesong. “Jim was a devoted family man who lived his life with the utmost integrity in every way. He was unfailingly polite, kind and caring to all that he met from the most powerful executives and superstars to the newest eager arrival on Music Row. Jim Foglesong was a true gentleman and what a legacy he leaves us. My heart is broken.”

“Jim Foglesong was truly one of my heroes, and he’ll be sorely missed,” adds singer-songwriter Don Williams. “He was a giant in the industry and the model of a true gentleman. He was incredibly supportive of me as an artist and instrumental in much of the success I’ve enjoyed.”
“My family and I are deeply saddened by Jim Fogelsong’s passing,” says Barbara Mandrell. “Jim’s family and mine have shared so many wonderful times together as dear friends for so many years. He was such an important influence on my career as my record company president for most of the years I spent recording. He was a loving and caring friend who provided thoughtful wisdom and guidance. I have comfort and peace knowing that Jim loved our Lord Jesus Christ and he’s with Him now.”
Foglesong was born in Lundale, W. Va., on July 26, 1922. His career began in New York, where he worked for Columbia, Epic and RCA. He relocated to Nashville to oversee Dot Records in 1970. There he guided the careers of Roy Clark, Don Williams and Donna Fargo among others. In 1973, he became the first executive to be given the title of president of a major record company on Music Row. After ABC purchased Dot Records, ABC/Dot Records added Barbara Mandrell, the Oak Ridge Boys and Freddie Fender to the roster. During Foglesong’s tenure at MCA, the label signed George Strait, Reba McEntire and Lee Greenwood. He oversaw Capitol Nashville from 1984 through 1989 and signed Garth Brooks as well as renewed the career of Tanya Tucker.

Foglesong was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2004. He was inducted into Leadership Music’s Class of 1990; he later received Leadership Music’s Dale Franklin Award in 2009, the same year that Garth Brooks was awarded with the same honor. Foglesong was a long-time member of the Country Music Association and served as chairman of the organization. He was also a recipient of the Nashville Entertainment Association’s Bridge Award.

Before retiring in 2012, Foglesong taught at Trevecca Nazarene University and at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Toni, and four children: James, Jr. “Jimi,” Cindy, Leslie and Rusty, and 16 grandchildren and great-children. Arrangements for a public memorial service are pending and will be announced at a later date.

'MusicRow' No. 1 Song

Justin Moore.

Justin Moore

It’s summertime and MusicRow CountryBreakout chart reporting stations decided to spin Justin Moore’s rowdy and rompin’ single, “Point At You,” to this week’s No. 1 position.
Written by Rhett Atkins, Ross Copperman and Ben Hayslip, the tune is Moore’s initial offering from his forthcoming Sept. 17 Valory Music Co. release, Off the Beaten Path.
In March, MusicRow’s Robert K. Oermann reviewed the single, saying: “He drawls his tale with gusto. He has a wild side, but if you want to see his soft, sweet, best side, look at his gal. Sonically, it’s a jumbo joyride that romps along with all the goofy best of intentions. This will sound splendid on the radio.”
The forthcoming Jeremy Stover-produced project will boast 16 songs on the deluxe album including Moore’s collaboration with Miranda Lambert (“Old Habits”), in addition to “For Some Ol Redneck Reason” with Charlie Daniels. We’re looking forward to the new tunes!

CMHoF Details 'Reba: All The Women I Am' Exhibit and Programs

Reba“It’s impossible to overstate Reba’s impact on country music,” said Country Music Hall of Fame’s Museum Director Kyle Young, announcing the Aug. 9 opening of Reba McEntire’s 10-month biographical exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.

Opening weekend of Reba: All The Women I Am includes a host of promotional events, including the 2011 Country Music Hall of Famer participating in a special interview on Saturday, Aug. 10 at 2:30 p.m. in the Hall’s Ford Theatre, sharing life and career highlights. Free with museum admission or membership, McEntire’s interview requires a program pass due to limited seating. The interview will also be streamed live here.
Additionally, the weekend includes a Reba-themed Songwriter Session on Saturday (Aug. 10) at 11:30 a.m. with Liz Hengber (“For My Broken Heart,” “It’s  Your Call,” “And Still” and “Forever Love”) and Will Robinson (“I Know How He Feels” and “Somebody’s Chelsea,” written with Hengber and McEntire), as well as a Sunday (Aug. 10) GAC Backstory: Reba McEntire (2011) film screening at 2:00 p.m.
The exhibit itself, accompanied by a 104-page book published by the museum’s Country Music Foundation Press and available at Museum retail locations, will center around more than two dozen costumes, including many never exhibited garments such as her first official stage costume (a silky blue blouse with coordinating vest). Numerous Sandi Spika designs are featured including “The red dress” (worn during the 1993 CMA Awards); Reba’s “favorite” two-piece, teal silk shantung gown featuring a long train and beaded, sequined bodice; alongside a suede fringed jacket and chaps, corset, hat and boots from the Broadway production Annie Get Your Gun; and costumes from films including The Gambler Returns: The Luck of the DrawNorth and Is There Life Out There?
Reba: All The Women I Am also employs vintage photographs, career-spanning audio and video and personal possessions including a handbill from Kiowa Elementary School’s 1965 Christmas program where a 5th grade McEntire sang “Blue Christmas,” a sophomore report card from Kiowa High School, and a Reba Barbie, a lunch box and a bag of Fritos featuring the superstar’s likeness.
“Reba is the most successful female country performer of her generation, and a major influence on many of the female recording artists who have followed her,” continued Young. “Her achievements and accolades are almost too numerous to mention. Her contributions go well beyond recording. She heightened production values for country concerts. Through her work on Broadway, in film, and as the star of two television comedies, Reba has helped to heighten and expand the profile of country music, lifting all boats in her magnificent wake.”
Reba: All the Women I Am, will run through June 8, 2014 in the museum’s East Gallery in association with an ongoing series of event programs.

Charlie Cook On Air: Where Are The Females?

Charlie Cook

Charlie Cook

It has been about a year since I looked at how many females were making an impact in the format. I bring it up again because there has been a change since last year when I compared Country to Top 40 and AC to see the comparison between the formats.
A funny thing happened this year. No, Country has not gotten better, but the other formats have gone in the other direction.
In 2012, three females placed songs in the Top 20 on the Country Mediabase year end chart. Jana Kramer, Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert were the only three females on the list. Taylor Swift was not on the list but she had kind of a good year and really doesn’t need chart position to influence sales. In Top 40 Ellie Goulding, Carly Rae Jepsen, Kelly Clarkson, Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, Rihanna (twice), Demi Lovato, Adele and Pink all made the Top 20. That is 50 percent of the Top 20 for the year compared to 15 percent for Country.
In AC, there was between 11 and 13. “Moves Like Jagger” credits Christina Aguilera and The Band Perry is on the list. Certainly Kimberly is the “voice” on the song. Let’s agree on 12 which means 60 percent of this chart was female.
Today, as I write this column, the Country chart has two female voices in the Top 20. Again, one is TBP and the other is Carrie. Top 40 has five in the Top 20 and AC has eight. I ask this question every year. I think I have written about this three times now and it completely stumps me.
We see female acts working very hard, without the success their efforts should show. There are a few female artists bubbling under, like Sheryl Crow, Kacey Musgraves and Jana Kramer, who is flirting with repeating her debut success. I really like Maggie Rose and Jaida Dreyer because I happen to know personally how hard they both work at it. Katie Armiger is pounding the highways as is Sarah Darling. Gretchen Wilson is a great act live, but she may be overlooked because of her early music being too big to repeat. Not fair.
Blake Shelton has given us Cassadee Pope and Gwen Sebastian. You might think his influence would count for more but so far that has not been enough. Speaking of TV success, what female has had more tube time than Kellie Pickler? And who doesn’t love Kellie? But her current single is just out there somewhere. I know I have failed to mention a couple of young ladies that have shown up on the radio but with little play. Actually, this isn’t about individual acts. My point in mentioning them is to show they are out there and working hard but to little avail.
Looking for a reason, you could blame male PDs but that doesn’t really work. You can blame label support but that wouldn’t make any sense either. Sony has Miranda and Carrie. Maybe that is enough for them. Taylor is (and should be) the queen of BMLG. Warner Bros. doesn’t have a lead female but Ms. Crow is pecking away at chart position. The Universal Label Group has a ton of successful male and group performers but no stand out female yet.
I once worked for a boss that DEMANDED we play 50 percent females on the station. It wasn’t too long ago and it was impossible. As I look at their list today I see some questionable titles from female acts so this philosophy must still be in place. Maybe this is the way to force females on the air. As a programmer, I would love the balance of sound and tempo that ballads and females bring to the station. But I have learned that trying to force feed the audience is a mistake. You need to lead them until they take over and then you had better follow them.

Sheeran Performance Raises More Than $22,500 For Musicians On Call

Ed Sheeran performs to raise funds for Musicians On Call.

On Monday (July 8), 107.5 The River hosted a Star Party at Hard Rock Cafe in downtown Nashville, to benefit Musicians On Call, an organization that brings live and recorded music to the bedside of patients at healthcare facilities. The Star Party, which featured English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, raised more than $22,500 for the Nashville branch of Musicians On Call. The amount raised is more than enough to fund one of the program’s 11 weekly Bedside Performance Programs for a full year.
Sheeran’s solo-acoustic set included hits “The A Team” and “Lego House,” as well as fan favorites including “You Need Me, I Don’t Need You.”
Through benefit concerts, live and online auctions featuring concert experiences and memorabilia from The Black Keys, Eric Church, Kelly Clarkson, Darius Rucker, Gene Simmons, Sheeran, Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban and more, MOC Nashville has received over $65,000 in recent weeks to go toward programs in Middle Tennessee. MOC Nashville anticipates the announcement of an additional weekly Bedside Performance Program to open later this year.
